Simply thos, I am sick fed up of stories on the news of poor hard to people who have chosen to increase their and their loved ones covid risk by going abroad on holiday knowing the risks and now they are bleating to the press about how hard done by they are. You knew the risk so stop bitching about it?

EL8888 · 03/09/2020 22:38

Yep. No one made them do it so why are they whining?!

BookSkark · 03/09/2020 22:40

Except that maybe they'd already paid, couldn't get a refund on insurance and at the time of travel there were no restrictions? Yes, everything is a risk now but I don't think anyone anticipated quite how quickly and frequently the advice would change.

halcyondays · 03/09/2020 22:49

Yes, it’s hardly a surprise when another country gets added to the quarantine list, is it?

No objection to anyone going abroad, dont necessarily agree with it but it's your personal choice however I do object to the bitching about quarantine when people knew that was always going to be a potential

I have no problem whatsoever with people going abroad but yes I agree it shouldn't come as a huge shock if you choose to do so under these circumstances that you may be quarantined.

AlrightTreacle · 03/09/2020 23:25

Don't do the crime, if you can't do the time.

Not that I have a problem with people going abroad or think it's an actual crime, but you should be prepared for the quarantine rules to potentially changed while you're away, and if quarantine is such a major inconvenience for you then don't go.

Brighterthansunflowers · 03/09/2020 23:27

Rules have changed enough times now that nobody should be surprised.

If you choose to go away knowing there’s a risk the rules might chance, you can’t complain if that risk doesn’t pay off.

AlrightTreacle · 03/09/2020 23:28

Really? Surely pretty much everyone knows that travel advice can change very last minute by now, unless they have literally been living under a rock for the past 6 months.

LEELULUMPKIN · 03/09/2020 23:38

YANBU. With any luck and negative covid test permitting DH and I will be flying to Antigua in 11 days.

We are fully aware of the risks and all that entails. The very last thing I would be doing is running to the press blaming the Government which to be fair have said all along that things could and would change at little or no notice.

It is the media who have whipped up this will they won't they frenzy purely to fill column inches and spread misinformation.

To whine about it to a national newspaper about it reminds me of the old saying "better to be thought a fool than open your mouth and prove it!"

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 03/09/2020 23:38

Agree OP. It’s been well known that restrictions could happen and I would if needed.

People wanted their holidays though so everyone should have to quarantine upon return from another country so their choices of risk don’t affect others.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 03/09/2020 23:43

I feel slightly sorry for the initial people in Spain who were encouraged by the government (or so it seemed) to go away, and then suddenly a quarantine was imposed with no notice.

I’m not sure they really were warned.

Obviously not for those people who pissed about not social distancing and partying in the street without masks on. But people who went and acted in good faith.

After that I don’t feel sorry for anyone else as they knew there was a risk of a quarantine on return and decided to take that risk. Nothing wrong with going, but they have to take the quarantine which was the chance they took.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 03/09/2020 23:44

But I agree no one should be pissing and moaning and everyone should quarantine who is required to.

Whitneylilyrose · 03/09/2020 23:46

Op I think you should take your own advice

Nanny0gg · 03/09/2020 23:56

Latest one is complaining that she's just spent extra to get home so her children don't miss school but she didn't need to because Portugal hasn't been added to the quarantine list!

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/09/2020 00:00

I have sympathy for people who booked well before CV19 and because it is officially ok for them to go, wont get their money back on insurance. In their case, I would probably go, hope for the best and spend as little as possible in case we had to SO afterwards.

Anyone who has booked since the start of Feb onwards? No sympathy at all.

swimlyn · 04/09/2020 00:49

I just love the fact that the whingers care so much about the quarantine on/off situation, moan about high airfares if changing a flight, but clearly have no problem at all with the risk of getting Covid themselves or passing it on to vulnerable people.

The more you move around anywhere, the more new contacts you have anywhere, the more likely you are to come across infection eventually.

If you use a ‘hub’ airport you really are pushing your luck.

Don't you think people have a right to be pissed off with all the confusion though ?

We booked Portugal holiday at the beginning of the year . Accommodation, flights etc booked separately .
Seeing other countries being added to the quarantine list over the summer , we never expected to get on our holiday and were really surprised when announcement to lift quarantine came mid August.

Then again this week it's all up in the air again . We can get refund on accommodation but this needs cancelling this Saturday.

Deciding we couldn't take quarantine risk we therefore cancelled .
Portugal now hasn't gone back on quarantine list , so we won't get refund on our flights .

I think when people have had a crap year and then they think they've got the chance of a week or so in the sun it's reasonable then feel fed up when this then doesn't happen / you lose money / or find rules change when you're away

Nikori · 04/09/2020 01:41

I don’t understand why people can just get tested on return. Are the testing facilities really overrun in the UK? Surely they’ve had time to ramp them up by now.

swimlyn · 04/09/2020 01:47

@shinynewapple2020

If you want an even crapper year, try full-blown Covid-19.

Three deaths in three months for our extended family, and only one ‘vulnerable’.

Nikori · 04/09/2020 01:55

Sorry, obviously I meant I don’t understand why they can’t just test people on return. Two weeks is a long time to isolate. Unless I was retired or had a job where I could easily work from home for 2 weeks, I’d cancel any holidays abroad this year. It’s too big a risk.

PyongyangKipperbang · 04/09/2020 01:56

So you are suggesting the testing facilities should prioritise fuckwits who decided a fortnight in the sun, despite quarantine risks, was a good idea over people who might actually have it?!

Really?!

Nikori · 04/09/2020 02:04

No, I think after all this time, they should have enough testing available for everyone.

Read that in Tokyo, they have 1-hour saliva tests available at the airports for all incoming passengers. Why don’t they have that in the UK?

Really.... then they must be particularly dense !! I'm completely nonplussed at the stupidity of some people. You can't plan for a spike , it happens quickly.

And to others what use is testing on return? You arrive back in the country showing no symptoms, likely a negative test and develop symptoms 10 days later...

Who are "they"? And bearing in mind that testing centres are running at capacity, and that we are not in Japan, how are you suggesting "they" maake sure that not only are there are enough tests for everyone in the UK, but also for everyone flying in?

I assume that you are suggesting France, Germany, Spain, Portugal et al have that testing available too?

WeAllHaveWings · 04/09/2020 03:36

There are more unknown or serious risks when traveling during a pandemic than quarantine and I think anyone going abroad just now is mad. I wish everyone traveling the best, but no sympathy if the risk they are taking doesn't pan out.

Dh's friend took advantage of the cheap prices and took the family to dubai, a holiday usually well outwith their reach.

He says they had to have negative covid tests before they left the UK. When they arrived in dubai they were told the UK test was not good enough and they were refused entry until they performed another test at a cost of £350 each 😱, wiping out most of their spending money for the week. He contacted dh to ask him to send some spending money Hmm
