To think ‘mousey’ hair is the worst hair colour to have?

Marnie56 · 03/09/2020 20:25

I am one of these people with naturally ‘mousey’ hair - until I was about 10 I had light golden blonde hair and as with a lot of people it gradually got darker. Since I was about 14 I’ve had highlights religiously every few months. So my hair is still ‘blonde’ but only because I spend so much money on it!

I absolutely hate the fact that without highlights I would be this ‘nothing’ colour - it’s not a nice brown/brunette colour and it’s not blonde. I don’t even know what I would look like if I let my highlights grow out and I never got them again but I can’t imagine it would look nice!

I know a lot of people get some sort of colour in their hair, balayage etc but most people would still look fine if they had their natural hair colour - I think all hair colours look nice apart from this weird mouse/dishwater.

Anyone else feel like me? Am I just destined to have to get highlights every few months forever so I look remotely nice!?

If you have let your hair go ‘natural’ and it is mousey and looks good I would be very interested to see it! I don’t think I can think of any celebs with that sort of hair!

Another mousey hair owner here! Even my hairdresser agrees there is no other word for mine and he held it to the light to demonstrate it has no hint of red or anything really. Just a dull ashy mouse!

Like many of you I have blonde added in either highlights or balayage as my hair lightens really well and my eyebrows are quite fair. Went dark brown once and it was a big mistake.

I second the posters who think it will work well as we go grey. Hoping to blend in to blonde.

perfumeistooexpensive · 03/09/2020 21:08

Mine is mousey. I've dyed it since I was 14. Suddenly became allergic to dye and had to grow back the natural colour. Surprise! It was lovely with strands in different colours and golden blonde curls. My DH loves it. Why on earth did I bother dyeing it?

eaglejulesk · 03/09/2020 21:12

I've got mousey hair and I've never dyed it, ever. Of course I wish it was a lovely dark brown, but it is what it is and I can't be bothered pfaffing around with it. Many years ago a hairdresser called it caramel ash (I think he was being kind).

littlepeas · 03/09/2020 21:14

I do think skin tone matters, but only in terms of what colours you look best in. I am probably quite mousy, but I am a warm mouse with lots of red in my hair, warm (but very pale) skin tone and green eyes. I like the colour I’ve ended up with after growing my blonde out. The ends of my hair are lighter and warmer than the roots - so if you’re only ever looking at the roots that may not be a true representation of what your natural hair colour will look like once it’s grown down.

I also look terrible in black, but suit autumnal colours - cool toned stuff washes me out (so different to above poster). I think it’s like any hair colour/colouring in general - if you wear the colours that suit you then it looks nice!

Frownette · 03/09/2020 21:22

I think they're all beautiful.

Dazzedandconfused · 03/09/2020 21:22

I hear you! My hair is between 'dirty blonde' and 'mousey brown' both horrible bland hair colours imo. I've also been dying my hair since I was 12 though so I'm going on distant memories and what my roots look like 🤣 I tend to dye my hair a medium ash blonde which is similar shade to my eyebrows.

JalapenoDave · 03/09/2020 21:23

Mouse here too - completely agree with you OP. Mine has been royally destroyed with bleach though so I'm taking the plunge and going brunette I think! Anything to cover up the mouse!

Biscoffscoff · 03/09/2020 21:26

Im mousey too. Even my mum used to say my hair colour didn't suit me. No hint of warmth, just a flat grey-brown (ashy) tone.

The best thing about mousey hair is that it takes dye well! I had to let mine grow in a bit during lockdown and despite not having seen it for twenty years I can't say it was any better than I remembered...

Emeraldshamrock · 03/09/2020 21:28

I like mine. My regrowth is very light after highlights I only need my colour done 3 times a year.

TorgosPizza · 03/09/2020 21:28

I wouldn't call it mousy/mousey because the name sounds unappealing, even though the colour itself is fine. Maybe light brown? Some wood/tree-themed name?

One positive about light brown is that (I imagine) you have more options for hair colouring without having to bleach (as much) first. I have dark brown, which is difficult to colour without first bleaching. I won't ever do that, as it's too much fuss to keep on top of and can be so damaging to the hair.

One other good thing is that when you start to go grey, it probably won't show as starkly as it does against dark hair.

ODFOx · 03/09/2020 21:30

Actually I quite like the mouse. Except now that I'm getting grey over my ears I can't find a dye which matches. Even the light mid brown was orange on my hair. I want to embrace the mid grey brown (aka mouse) but I am being forced towards caramelly tones. Boo

hastingsmua1 · 03/09/2020 21:30

I genuinely wouldn’t mind having your hair colour! It makes an nice base colour for going blonde so you won’t have to worry about regrowth or breakage/damage as it’s easy to lighten. You can experiment with fun colours like pastel pink etc as it wouldn't completely wreck your hair to go that light.

I have naturally dark brown hair and light skin so look “vampy”. I don’t mind it but feel more like myself with lighter brown hair or with blonde highlights as it can wash me out.

Useruseruserusee · 03/09/2020 21:32

I’m mousey too and have grown to accept it. As a teenager I had all different colours but mainly red. I’ve been blonder and also darker.

I have very pale skin and blue eyes - luckily my mousey hair has some golden tones so it works. I’ll only dye it in the future when it starts to go grey!

Vinorosso74 · 03/09/2020 21:32

This reminds me I need to book a fair appointment, it was cut in July as that was very desperate!
I had very blonde hair as a kid and it gradually darkened. I have been getting highlights for years now as it went a sort of dirty blonde colour. Unfortunately, now I can see a few greys have appeared as well.
My colouring is wrong for any other hair colour so I hear you.

hastingsmua1 · 03/09/2020 21:35

I can sort of see why you don’t like it if you were once blonde though.

StrawberrySquash · 03/09/2020 21:37

I quite like mine, but it's not a solid colour, it does have subtle streaks in it. Much more when I was a child though!

MillieEpple · 03/09/2020 21:37

I didnt like my mousey hair at all until recently. I felt it was non-descript. I envied blondes, red heads and proper brunettes of all shades and lovely black hair. They were real hair colours.
Anyway i have started to appreciate it now. Its actually quite a rare colour. If you look around the whole world most people dont have mousey hair.
Mine looks nice with lots of autumny colours and it matches my eyes well.

TheVamoosh · 03/09/2020 21:41

Yabu. I was blonde growing up bit because I'm so pale, to light hair makes me look washed out and so does dark hair. I'm so happy now that my hair has turned mousy dark blonde. It suits me really well!

Frownette · 03/09/2020 21:42

@SummerSummerSummertime

Kate moss blatantly has mousey hair colour naturally.
I miles preferred that to her bleached blonde. Up to her though, perhaps she has some greys. And she's always in the public eye.
CheshireDing · 03/09/2020 21:44

I hear you OP. It’s the description my Parents and Gran always used for my hair, like t was supposed to be some kind of compliment 🤔 it wasn’t and my hair looks crap it’s normal colour, plus there’s grey too.

It’s blonde now and has been since I was at least 25 and I’m 44 now. It will never be mousey even in bloody Lockdown !

sbhydrogen · 03/09/2020 21:49

Fellow mousey hair here 🙋🏼‍♀️ I haven't had my hair highlighted since December due to DD being born and then lockdown. It's the most I've seen my hair since 2008 and I WISH I could get it done, as it's so boring. Unfortunately, I'm on SMP so can't afford it. Yet.

wishywashywoowoo70 · 03/09/2020 21:50

I've always had highlights too. Spend a fortune every few weeks.
Like you in lockdown hasn't had it done since mid March. Haven't bothered either and it looks ok. Like a balayage.

I'm tempted to leave it for more months and just stick with it. Certainly won't be colouring it so often.

My hair is naturally mousey fine and flat too

NiceGerbil · 03/09/2020 21:51

I think most women aren't happy with their hair, whatever it is!

The bright side maybe for the mousey hair is that other colours and types can have downsides.

Your hair becoming the main thing about 'you', what people always notice, comment on, admire from when you are little, over anything else about you.

Attention draw for wankers. I know they will comment on anything but getting 'do the collars match the cuffs' from grown men when you are pubescent is shit.

People touching it etc.

Having value judgements made on it eg red heads are 'fiesty', blondes have more fun, 'having a blonde moment' etc irrespective of your personality.

I know these things may sound ridiculous to those on the thread, it's just. I have rarely met a woman who liked her hair!

RandyGiles06 · 03/09/2020 21:57

I have mousey hair and I hate it! It’s so dull! Only good thing about mousey hair is that it takes to hair dye quite well (or mine does anyway!) I’d hate to add up how much I’ve spent on colouring my hair over the years...

mumwon · 03/09/2020 21:58

Grey hair shows much much later in "mousey" (I refer to it as ash colour) like 10 years later & you only have to use high lights or streaks to camouflage the grey -
