To think ‘mousey’ hair is the worst hair colour to have?

I am one of these people with naturally ‘mousey’ hair - until I was about 10 I had light golden blonde hair and as with a lot of people it gradually got darker. Since I was about 14 I’ve had highlights religiously every few months. So my hair is still ‘blonde’ but only because I spend so much money on it!

I absolutely hate the fact that without highlights I would be this ‘nothing’ colour - it’s not a nice brown/brunette colour and it’s not blonde. I don’t even know what I would look like if I let my highlights grow out and I never got them again but I can’t imagine it would look nice!

I know a lot of people get some sort of colour in their hair, balayage etc but most people would still look fine if they had their natural hair colour - I think all hair colours look nice apart from this weird mouse/dishwater.

Anyone else feel like me? Am I just destined to have to get highlights every few months forever so I look remotely nice!?

If you have let your hair go ‘natural’ and it is mousey and looks good I would be very interested to see it! I don’t think I can think of any celebs with that sort of hair!

I agree but then I have mousey hair too. It’s horrible! I did let it grow out a few years back and whilst it was a bit ‘nothing’ it was much shinier and softer than when I have it dyed. I didn’t like it though so have gone back to the bleach!

TisConfusion · 03/09/2020 20:33

Same as you. But I was about 7 or 8 when mine went from blonde to mouser brown and I actually started colouring it at 11! The only time I’ve seen my natural (mousey) colour since has been this year due to lockdown and I hadn’t had it coloured for 8 months. Really didn’t like it. I mean, it was (dyed) blonde on the ends so had a bit of an ombré thing going on but it still didn’t look great - especially when tied back. Have gone back to highlights now though I would like them a more golden blonde than they are at the moment.

It’s crap isn’t it!! I wish I had a proper hair colour that would look nice and shiny and natural Sad

Another mouse here, agree it’s so nondescript

I think people with lovely brown/dark/red hair are so lucky! Grin

My hair colour is so rubbish that I dye it darker but have a few highlights as well to break it up, so it looks like I have nice dark hair with highlights but actually I'm double faking it!

Apparently this combination isn't that unusual but it is expensive (but probably the same as a normal head of highlights overall)

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/09/2020 20:36

Yep, me. I've been dyeing it since I was 14. Darker hair looks better on me so I alternate with plum/red/dark brown colours.

Turbotastic · 03/09/2020 20:37

Me too and I don't like it - although I think that part of it is because I live in a not very sunny country. I fully believe that if I lived somewhere hot & sunny my hair would lighten to be a nice blonde colour but because I don't it tends to fade to mouse in the winter or if we have a particularly meh summer 😞

BrokenBrit · 03/09/2020 20:37

I think it can be a really nice colour.
I don’t have mousey hair but my hair is generally a nightmare and I wish I had nice mousey hair.
I think we all like what is on other people more than our own Grin.

Anordinarymum · 03/09/2020 20:38

People with very dark brown hair like me don't enjoy it so much when they start going grey.

Right now I would settle for mousey over my colour as it must be so much easier to go either way with colouring.

I am sitting here with a long plait which is 90% brown and 10% grey and feeling lost.

Mousey rocks :)

Interesting! I’ve never been brave enough to dye it darker in case I could never get it light again - I am sure that’s probably silly!

My hair is a darkish mouse with bits of grey. I was auburn for a bit, but now leave it alone. Every time I dyed it, I would break out in hives.

As in the colour is a nightmare or the texture/style? Don’t even get me started on the fact it’s flat with no volume!!!

I have ‘mousey’ hair as you call it. It lightens really well and takes to colour really well. I get it lifted with bleach and tone it so it’s a nice cool ashy colour.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 03/09/2020 20:40

I remember the line from an episode of will and grace
“You’re a fabulous red head. I’m a fabulous blonde. But we know we have something in common....brown hair”

Yep dye or highlights for life!

I suppose a perk might be not going grey so quickly but who knows! Grin

I'm jealous that people with mousey hair can usually get away with going blonde or dark. My hair is naturally v dark brown, practically black and I can't change it much. Plus the grey is so obvious in dark hair!!

Don’t get me wrong the colour I have it is fine because I get it highlighted/toned - but if I left it I think it would look horrible!!

Yep, mine is the same. I hate it.

reticule · 03/09/2020 20:44

If you wear colours that suit your own skin, hair, eye colouring, no-one would think the word 'mousey' when they look at your hair. They'll think maybe, golden brown, or stripey dark and pale brown, or ash dark blonde, or cool beige, or whatever, depending on how warm, cool, soft, clear, light, dark you are. If you're someone who feels you have mousey hair, you may be dressing in colours that are too dark and/or bright for you. This goes for makeup too, if you wear it.

Mousey is nice if you have a warm skin tone. My skin is grey (not an English rose) and I look terrible with my natural mousey hair colour, almost anaemic.

cinnamongirl1 · 03/09/2020 20:45

meh I have dark blonde hair that goes brownish in winter (i refuse to call it mouse!) and brighter in summer. it might not be the most exciting colour naturally but it takes colour well, easy to lighten or darken it and root growth doesnt look too bad either way. I have balayage about every 8 months that brightens it up nicely and the regrowth blends in well

littlepeas · 03/09/2020 20:46

I have grown my blonde highlights out after 25 years (started at 13, about to turn 38). The colour my roots were looked awful but it has got nicer and nicer as it’s grown down. I’ve had the last of the blonde cut out now and I’ve ended up with a natural balayage look - darker roots, gradually getting lighter towards the ends (def my natural hair - not dye). The condition is astonishingly better. I won’t dye my hair again now.
