To spend nearly £200 on a tiny needle felted sculpture of my beloved dog?
Barely 10cm tall!

DH says it’s a complete waste of money and I can just hear my DM now aghast that I would spent so much money on such a thing...

Picture of an example of the artists work, (not my dog breed)

Would you?

Am I crazy..

It's a ridiculous price. I'd expect to pay £20-30 for it
Needle felting takes many hours to be fair, I know because I’ve done a bit myself (though nothing close to the standard of the artist I’m going to buy from)

@Pretenditsaplan

All i could think is wow thats going to be a bugger to keep dust free
My very thought, @Pretenditsaplan And I’m not precious about dust!
Borderstotheleftofme · 03/09/2020 19:33

That’s tall and thin Lurched? Greyhound?
She’s a border collie but I think there probably is greyhound somewhere in her lineage as she’s quite fine boned and ‘racy’.
Height depends on how you measure it, her forehead touches my hip but if you are measuring by shoulders it’s obviously shorter.

I wouldn’t but then I spend hundreds of pounds on collector edition Barbies so each to their own I suppose. The main difference is that I can re-sell my Barbies at any time, probably for a profit. But if it will make you happy and you can afford it, go for it!

SBTLove · 03/09/2020 19:36

There are several ppl in the U.K. who make these and not as much as £200.
I had a photo shoot for mine and I love it especially as we lost our boy 2 mths ago 🥰🐶

BestOption · 03/09/2020 19:53

If you can afford it (without starving) & it will make you happy, then why not? (I presume you've got some savings to tide you over if you lose your job etc).

I don't especially like felting myself & I think it'll be a bugger to keep clean - unless you have a China Cabinet. But I think she's very talented, it's extremely well done. I think you're wise to stick to a crafter whose work you admire, rather than going for a cheap option that's not so good.

I hope you post a photo & one if your dig if you get it done.

Justdroppin · 03/09/2020 20:03

@Borderstotheleftofme haven’t RTFT but my friend actually makes these... not sure how much she charges but I’m always amazed by them.... think they are so clever. Doubt you would have to wait 8 months 😁

@BlueDream

I'm quite stoned, so I 100% blame you if I now this evening go and spunk £200 on a stuffed version of my cat.
I am the same. Things off amazon keep turning up I have no idea when I ordered them Confused
RedPanda17 · 03/09/2020 20:08

OMG yes!!!!!!

It’s great to spend your money buying from an artist/crafter rather than on mass produced stuff. Needle felting isn’t my taste and there’s loads of awful examples around, but this work looks really skilful and £200 is a reasonable price for the time it would take to make.

BikeRunSki · 03/09/2020 20:21

If you want to spend your money on that, and no one dependant on you will go cold/hungry/unclothed/without school shoes etc, then knock yourself out.

Leaannb · 03/09/2020 20:21

@Borderstotheleftofme

Ooh the responses! 😯 I bloody love it and can’t wait for it to have pride of place on my shelf so there!
Then do it. Screw what everybody else thinks

A lot of people have hobbies that other people think are a waste of money, so what? I have a dolls house and DH is buying me a needle felted dog for Christmas that looks exactly like our own to put in it. Over the next few years I am going to put models of beloved pets in every room. The family that live in the dolls house have been based on us and our children but in Georgian clothes and they were made by a UK-based artisan as well. DH loves buying me things for my house as it means he always has an idea of what to get me on my birthday or christmas. Your dog may not be to everyone's taste but I think it is lovely to buy something hand made were all the money goes straight to the person who made it.

It’s very rural Everyone has a go. Sort of a right of passage thing Night classes , you choose upholstery or taxidermy or conversational Italian
Throckmorton · 03/09/2020 21:08

I think it's cool! Make sure carpet moths don't get at it though - what with them and dust, a glass case for it might be a good plan.

LynetteScavo · 03/09/2020 21:22

I actually like it, and it's obviously very well made. But it's a bit of a waste of money IMO. I'd rather have a professional photograph.

I like it, but I'd like £200 in the bank more.

Athenajm80 · 03/09/2020 21:55

@YesIrltsMeIDontCare I have just ordered a Cuddle Clone of my beloved cat who was PTS last week. I wish I could have had one of the other cat who was also PTS the same week, but I couldn't stretch to two. Is it as amazing as they look on the website? I'm so nervous that it's going to be disappointing.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 03/09/2020 23:34

@Athenajm80 - absolutely not disappointed at all. I added loads of photos from every angle and described him in as much detail as humanly possible. It's hard to describe, but it looks exactly like him but is obviously a cuddly toy so it's not creepy - iyswim.

I'd take a photo for you, but he lives on my drawers, it's pitch black and the flash from the camera will give DH a heart attack 😂

pguppgdown · 04/09/2020 01:24

£200 for a tiny felt dog? If you can afford it, sure. It's cute. If you get it, and it arrives and has three legs or a wonky eye, please post so we can have a laugh...

Athenajm80 · 04/09/2020 06:17

@YesItsMeIDontCare Oh good, I'm less worried now. Thanks 🙂

cbt944 · 04/09/2020 06:56

I love tiny things! Whoever is doing these is very clever. I saw a spread in a magazine about a woman doing this work, and I could not believe such lifelike recreations were even possible. Maybe it's her. I would love a tiny representation of my dear dog. A bit pricey, but so enchanting.

suziedoozy · 04/09/2020 07:00

If you are going to do them can I recommend

stephaniecowburn.com/

She does your dog / range of other animals and I think they are ace - she is on Twitter and often tweets pictures of the penguins causing mischief in her fridge etc and they look so full of personality. I think hers are around £100ish

And no I am not her / she isn’t one of my friends / family etc I just saw her work on twitter and love it!

Rollmopsrule · 04/09/2020 07:16

Honestly I'm surprised by my reaction - I'd love one of these of my beloved dog.

ShennaIsAPrawnCracker · 04/09/2020 07:57

I'm very much of the "each to their own" camp. I paid £75 for a knitted mini version of my dog and I love it 😬
