Mixed sex toilets at primary school

From today the toilets at the primary school are now mixed sex. My daughter says she is uncomfortable with this and won’t be using them as there is a gap at the bottom and you can also stand on the toilet in the next cubicle and look over.

Is this even allowed? AIBU to think Surly mixed sex toilets should be floor to ceiling?

I'm a primary school governor and we recently converted our toilets to mixed sex. I think they thread really highlights the massive underinvestment in school premises over the past 50 years. Some of the toilet facilities described in this thread are not fit for purpose full stop.

In our case our toilets were woefully inadequate and long last repair. We had to completely replace them. For various reasons, including safety, ability to monitor toilets, concerns about bullying in the toilets and a transitioning pupil we decided to implement mixed sex toilets. Each toilet is a separate cubicle with floor to ceiling walls and doors (I made sure of it!). They are directly accessible from the corridor so no more bullying in the toilets, and easier to monitor and maintain. It's a massive improvement to our school premises. I think one parent raised a concern but we were able to assure them of privacy etc once they saw the final plans.

BUT I agree that simply taking a set of single sex toilets and slapping a gender neutral label on them in simply not good enough.

@cassgate If it is a temporary arrangement with good monitoring for covid purposes that is one thing.

The OP has said it is not due to bubbling in her case.

In withering's case they have done things properly with full height doors and direct access onto corridor.

Are the sinks in the cubicle? Or are young girls dealing with menstrual blood having to wash their hands at a communal sink? Are there sanitary bins in every cubicle?

This is illegal @Redcups64. Complain, quote the various legal bits at them, and complain again. It’s illegal as far as I know

From the guidance for schools updated on 28th August.

toilets will need to be cleaned regularly and pupils must be encouraged to clean their hands thoroughly after using the toilet - different groups being allocated their own toilet blocks could be considered but is not a requirement if the site does not allow for it

My sons upper school has always been mixed even before covid. They have single toilets dotted around everywhere. One in one out.
