to feel so embarrassed for crying in work

It's my first day back in work today after been off long term sick. I had my return to work with my new manager and was trying to keep it professional. Ended up bursting into tears (I have never cried in work before), I feel so embarrassed. AIBU?

These things happen. You're human, not a robot. What was it that upset you?

PinkiOcelot · 02/09/2020 14:14

I hate crying at work too. I look a right sight when I cry! However, I never think badly of others who cry at work, so I doubt your boss will think badly of you.

Useruseruserusee · 02/09/2020 14:14

Honestly I’m sure it’s fine and your manager is thinking no more of it. I’ve done it before and also been in the position of the manager having someone cry on me.

YANBU to be embarrassed but try not to let it get to you.

Swingbin · 02/09/2020 14:15

We’ve all had days like that, don’t be embarrassed.

Fizzingsherbert · 02/09/2020 14:15

Of course you're not being unreasonable! You are probably dealing with lots of different emotions going back. I know it may feel embarrassing but be kind to yourself. How did your manager react?

SRK16 · 02/09/2020 14:15

YABU. I know many people who have cried in work, myself included. Nothing to be ashamed of, you’re only human.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 02/09/2020 14:18

It's a big deal for you. Try not to worry about it. Just get on with your job now and put it behind you. Sometimes talking about upsetting things brings the emotions right back to to be surface.

How did the person conducting the 'back to work' react?

PoodleJ · 02/09/2020 14:22

These things happen. You’re human. Everyday people cry today at work.
Although it may feel embarrassing you should be proud of returning to work after a long time off work.
Keep going it’ll get better.

CaptainVanesHair · 02/09/2020 14:27

It happens. In fact it happened on teams with my manager before I left. And when I cry it sets him off and then we’re both sat there blubbering while trying to still have our professional conversation. My team surprised me by all coming in the day I went in to return everything to the office. Instance tears. And this year, we’re all in a heightened emotional state even if we don’t always realise it. Tears are part of being human.

Wife2b · 02/09/2020 15:02

Aww you’ll feel dreadful today, you’ll probably think about it without meaning to and relive the embarrassment. Go home, plan something nice like a movie or dinner that you really like. Tomorrow is a fresh start and eventually you’ll shrug your shoulders and think ‘meh it happens’. You’re only human after all.

CultOfWax · 02/09/2020 15:06

When you think of the amount of hours of your life that you spend at work - the law is averages says it's bound to happen at some point.

Will it matter tomorrow, or in 5 days, or in 5 years time, that you cried at work - no.

Don't be embarrassed.

MinnieJackson · 02/09/2020 15:07

I hope your health is better now Flowers don't worry, I expect it happens to lots of people returning to work that haven't been ill and were furloughed etc. It's the adrenalin and pressure probably. You're definitely not the first and definitely won't be the last

DMCWelshcakes · 02/09/2020 16:09

It's fine OP. You're human. It happens.

I hope your boss was sympathetic.

Thank you everyone

I was feeling so anxious about been back at work and overwhelmed during the return to work. My manager was sympathetic. I just hate crying in front of people.

Don't worry about it OP it shows you're human.
I'm a manager and most of my staff have cried in front of me. You're not the first and you won't be the last.
Hope your feeling better Flowers
