Am just watching an old Masterchef episode and one of the contestants is doing Greek food that I’ve never heard of.
It also got me thinking about when a friend cooked me something called pinacculty (if that’s how it’s spelled)?

Tell me about your lesser known local food specialities.

You could not be more wrong CaptainPovey. They are the food of the gods.

@LazyFace

Koszi! :)
Yes, I keep mixing them up. To be fair i hate that spice and only have it for this one dish. Oh and egg soup.

DarkMintChocolate · 02/09/2020 13:35

Vinosaurus

We had to drive through Green Lanes last week. We stopped for lunch. This time, we had the big platter of kebabs, rice and salads. Next time lahmacun!

Gobbycop · 02/09/2020 13:35

Deep fried mars bars.

@Calic0

OP, was your friend from the North East? My DH is from Middlesbrough and one of his favourite childhood memories is of his Mam cooking a corned beef stew which she called “panacalty”.

YY to Fat Rascals as well! One of my big treats during lockdown was getting a mail order delivery from Betty’s and having Fat Rascals for afternoon tea!

Betty's do mail order?!?! Oh my word.....(I'm a Yorkshire woman exiled in the South.....)

Craster kippers with warm buttered stottie and amber ale.

And from my mum's part of the world - real Cornish pasties and saffron loaf.

Agreeing with all the Scottish specialities except square sausage, yuk, yuk, yuk - just find it so greasy.....

Islathepaella · 02/09/2020 16:01

Another Teessider here, parmo yes but you need garlic sauce with it too!

A London pizza as well, which I believe may be regional? It's basically a margarita pizza with lots of chips on top. Also must be served with garlic sauce.

Both perfect for a hangover Smile

Gancanny · 02/09/2020 16:06

We have London pizzas in Northumberland. Definitely hangover food.

SueEllenMishke · 02/09/2020 16:44

Chip shop chips (cooked in beef dripping) with bits and loads of vinegar.
God I miss living in Yorkshire

@TheSunIsStillShining thanks for the ghoulash tips/recipe you could well be right that friends mum had sourced the right ingredients

I’m veggie so no beef, I use quorn or soya instead which I know will also affect the taste.

But from looking at the recipe think I’ve not been using enough spice.

Agree on sauerkraut, when I lived in glasgow I could access polish shops for good sauerkraut, pickled garlic etc but now I’m in “arse end of beyond” (which I hate for many reasons) I can’t even get decent Chinese or Indian food! Seriously every dish tastes exactly the same!

The ketchup - yes! Less acidic, more spices but not hot spicy and an umami flavour that I just cannot find in Uk

@diplodocusinermine - maybe it’s the brand you’ve tried or how you’re cooking? That said I have the Simon howie veggie version now definitely not greasy and very tasty!

Hangover food is the best! I don’t get hangovers per se but if I’m knackered after a night out (it’s been a long while!) you definitely want something tasty, filling and no effort!

MyChemicalMummy · 02/09/2020 18:03

Gypsy tart from kent.

CaptainPovey · 02/09/2020 18:09

Hi @GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal

I love a saveloy, not so keen on the Urban Dictionary version of Saveloy Dip that was returned in my search results.

Didn't even have to click into it it to read

Proper chicken parma from the pub with a pint of beer (proper beer not Fosters muck).
Party pies.
Hot chips with chicken salt.
Nearly everything Arnotts makes but especially dark chocolate Tim Tams and pizza shapes.

cjpark · 02/09/2020 18:19

Stargazy pie
Hevva Cake
Saffron Cake (with clotted cream)
Yarg
Fairings
Helston pudding
Seafood - BBQ pilchards, mackerel, brown crab
clotted cream ice cream with clotted cream on top.

Timeforatincture · 02/09/2020 18:29

DS and DDIL moved to Hillsborough last year so when visiting I have enjoyed the luscious Bere's pork sandwich.

With hot roast pork, stuffing, apple sauce AND crackling.

One of the best things I've ever eaten.

IggyAce · 02/09/2020 18:31

Loving all the votes for Parmo & lemon tops. If any of you visit Teesside recommend you try a parmo from Borges or Central Park. Pacittos is the best place for a lemon top.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 02/09/2020 18:40

@IggyAce Central park is the Italian place? If so, I'd definitely vote for their parmos. I've not been back to Redcar for 4 years, I've been promising the family a weekend there since then.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 02/09/2020 18:41

Also Whittaker's chocolate which is actually from New Zealand but I'm cheating and counting it anyway.

Sewsosew · 02/09/2020 19:04

Central Park has just been closed due to a covid outbreak.

DrCoconut · 02/09/2020 19:11

Plum bread is local but contains dried fruit 🤢. Haslet contains meat. But a good veggie pie with mash, mushy peas and gravy. Get it down yer, as my grandad used to say.

Islathepaella · 02/09/2020 19:17

Manjaros do a lovely parmo in Middlesbrough too.
