To think there should be more publicity around testicular torsion?

A good public health campaign is needed I think.
Emphasising that the pain does NOT have to be severe. That the quicker you get medical attention the better. That a watch and wait approach can lead to the loss of the testicle.

Have you told your sons about it?

Agree OP. I had never heard of this until one of my sons had severe pain in the night, at about age 13. We phoned GP at 8am, who sent us straight to A&E, where he was seen instantly. The torsion risk was explained to us, although in his case it turned out to be a cyst. He was being operated on under a general anaesthetic within 4 hours of us making the initial phone call. Finding out that the testicle could be lost within 6 hours was scary, particularly as it was something I had never heard of until that time.
