Grubby holiday cottage

Have decamped due to emergency building work to a holiday cottage but it's just not been cleaned properly. so many sticky patches in the kitchen, fridge not been cleaned, toaster not been cleaned. Skirting boards and flat surfaces dusty. Sofas full of hair, crumbs and dirt between the cushions.

When we first checked in yesterday I had a cleaner over because it really hadn't been hoovered/ dusted. I complained this morning as the kitchen tap fell off about the state of the kitchen, but she just said she'd pass my coments along to head office. It's not filthy but it's like they skipped a clean between customers apart from fresh sheets/ towels and wiping down the bathroom.

I don't know what I want but I'm really annoyed every time I notice another grubby patch or pull out a not very clean plate from the cupboard. It's 1400 quid a week and I'm staying for 3 weeks so over 4k in cost.

Can I demand that they deep clean it?

It did come with a cleaned and sanitised sticker that someone clearly imagined had magic powers given they had failed to clean or sanitise it.

Document as much as you can and ask for a partial refund.

Take photos; before/after or if it shows up side by side - clean surface vs as you find it.
Ask for discount, the threat of a legitimately bad review should do it, but if course if you go down that route , be fair and factual.

Take photos and give the agency a list of every issue.

I hear you! We had the same last week.
Arrived at a cottage to find overflowing recycling bins blocking the driveway and a wheelie bin full of maggots.
Sofa and chair had, what I can only describe as "head grease" stains on them that had been covered up with throws (which stank).
DS sat on his bed and it promptly collapsed.
Pans filthy and unusable.
We took photos and complained.
It's really not on to be paying over a thousand pounds for such shoddiness.
We are thinking of buying another caravan as sadly it's not the first holiday cottage where we have been disappointed at the lack of housekeeping.

photos should have definitely been taken, and bill them for the inconvenience plus cost of a cleaner. Expensive property by the sounds of things, the least you can expect is a decent standard of cleanliness.

I feel for you,we booked a canal side cottage in pawsey,Wiltshire and it was filthy!took lots of photos and looked for somewhere else as visiting very ill close relative four hours from home but couldn't find anything.owner was contacted but denied it was dirty and agency offered £25 and threatened us if we published any of the photos.refused to put up our review.

Take pics and send them to the agent/owner with a request for a refund. Horrible to have to turn up and clean!

womaninatightspot · 30/08/2020 15:09

I have taken photos and written a factual email to their offices.

If you have not paid for all of it, don't pay another penny until something is done.

Rented a cottage in Wales once, too my mother along, which added to the horror.
Every time we took her away with us, the luxury accomodation was not luxury.

There was dog hairs on the sofa and cushions, so we vacuumed as soon as we got in, and I washed the cushion covers.

There was no TV signal, and my mother is an avid TV watcher of soaps.
I can’t remember there being any DVD or video player now.

The room was drab, so I bought a bunch of pretty dried flowers and a gel air freshener to make it a bit nicer ( not ideal, but I didn’t find fresh flowers initally)

The worst was the bathroom.
No bath or toilet mats.
The toilet seat was awful, I looked at every outing for a replacement one, but not knowing the rural area, never found one.
The tiles around the bath and toilet were awful so I put towels down instead of mats, but even cleaning regularly they smelt.

All in all and awful house.
I complained, but I never got any reply to my numerous emails and letters.

We complained completely factually last year. Must have been 20 points. The owner was horrified and gave us a partial refund, claimed he was reviewing all practices and replacing beds and other furniture etc. He didn't live near the property. I like to think he did make the changes but we'd never stay again to check!
