To think that Joe Wicks is not a hero?

Dont get me wrong, I like him and do one of his hiit sessions every day. He is a great trainer and motivator and he has raised a lot of awareness of the benefits of exercise. But a hero he is not. What he is, is an astute man who spotted an opportunity to make a lot of money during lockdown.

He raised 500k for the NHS through t shirt sales. But he also made 10 million for himself. I saw numerous comments about him being a national treasure as he got up every morning to do a 30 - 40 minute PE session for the nation. Even with planning weekly costumes, making props and planning the exercises (though often he winged it) this does not necessitate a full days work I am sure. I did the sessions on top of an 8 - 10 hour working day as did many others which is much harder.

It just annoys me when I see him being hailed as a hero when I doubt he would have done it without being able to make a ton of money for himself and to raise his own profile

Well I think he's lovely🤷🏻‍♀️

AngelsWithSilverWings · 30/08/2020 12:28

I think he was brilliant for giving us all a huge boost when we really needed it. He brought families together - my daughter and I had great fun doing his PE sessions during lockdown. He deserves lots of praise for his work during that time I think. I agree that hero may be a bit strong but I've heard footballers described as such for doing a lot less! He seems to have a good heart and I don't understand why people want to knock him down.

SimonJT · 30/08/2020 12:29

@Cheeseandlobster

Also *@Longwhiskers14* he did not speak to Rosie with respect. He talked over her constantly as another poster also noticed. I posted about it at the time and said I hoped it was due to nerves rather than him being like this with her in every day day life
So should a trainer running a session stand in silence while he/she waits for participants to stop talking? If he hadn’t spoken over her he wouldn’t have been able to effectively ‘teach’ his class.

A local shop owner was hailed as a hero recently for giving out free bread during the pandemic, people were calling for memorial benches, OBEs etc. Apart from the fact our area has a lot of people who do good all year round for no reason, i recently found out the shop keeper bought every loaf in the cash and carry, other shop keepers were up in arms, but he couldn't sell it all so gave it away! What a heroConfused

ETPhoneHome19 · 30/08/2020 12:35

No a hero, just a bellend who saw an opportunity and went with it. He’s very OTT, I find him rude and what’s with the lean back pose? Not a fan, looks like he’s taking the mick out of stroke victims.
I’d respect him a lot more if he didn’t constantly break lockdown, have numerous people in his house and don’t get me started on how he is with Indie and Marley 🙃

Cheeeeislifenow · 30/08/2020 12:37

How is he with Indie and Marley?

Tinyleaf · 30/08/2020 12:40

Said this at the time and got slaughtered for it on here. He's managed to get lucrative contracts on the back of it that other pts couldn't even though they were better imo and more altruistic. I think he under anticipated how long lockdown would go on for.

Alongcameacat · 30/08/2020 12:40

This thread says more about the OP then Joe Wicks.

He was a positive influence to a huge number of people.

I hope he did benefit from it personally because thousands of children and adults benefited from what he did for them.

As for the implications of his relationship, that is showing the OP up in a very unpleasant way.

PablosHoney · 30/08/2020 12:43

Not a hero by any stretch but has he called himself one? I can’t bear his voice and energy but I know I’m being unreasonable there 😋

took them months to realise he had a sight issue and couldn’t see.

Why are you lying?

How am I lying?
Bassettgirl · 30/08/2020 12:51

I don't remember him ever calling himself a hero. But what's wrong with other people calling him one? He is inspired loads of families to stay active and positive at a really shit time, when some people couldn't even leave the house, even when he hurt his arm. He also seems lovely.

No need to be mean about that or make needless comparisons to covid wards Confused

Chachacha90 · 30/08/2020 12:51

YANBU

Some of the exercises were not age appropriate and the lack of an adequate warm up most days was the one thing that lost my respect.

And yes he got the kids moving, but a whole industry of group exercises instructors went online too, for a measly fee, still paying licenses and insurance, trying to keep their lives afloat because they could no longer get into the community... only for some clients to say “oh I do Joe every day it was free”

Mediocre exercise classes will be free though won’t they. Fucking “celebs”

Longwhiskers14 · 30/08/2020 12:52

And with Marley he can’t even be bothered, doesn’t acknowledge him half the time, took them months to realise he had a sight issue and couldn’t see.

FFS, you should be ashamed for twisting the truth here to make them sound like negligent parents, because I just Googled this as I hadn't read this and facts are the baby was born three weeks prematurely on Xmas Eve and they noticed in mid Feb that he wasn't quite focusing on them and took him straight away to a specialist get his sight checked out and were told it might be a developmental delay because he was premature and it was and he's fine now. But the way you've written it you make it sound like they let him go blind! Angry

noblegiraffe · 30/08/2020 12:54

How am I lying?

Because a quick google shows what you have said is not true.

KisstheTeapot14 · 30/08/2020 12:55

I think he's a little bit annoying (sort of like a Russell Brand younger brother) and not exactly a hero, but credit where it's due - he did help a lot of people all over the world to do a daily work out which kept us a bit fitter and probably a bit more mentally healthy than we other wise have been this spring.

Fair play that man, I say. To be a trainer to begin with is to be interested in helping people to be healthy. I don't mind if he made money on it, think he deserves it. So what if he is astute enough to spot a good opportunity. 10/10 for effort!

How did he constantly break lockdown? They didn’t seem to have a nanny or anything, even when he’d had his operation on his hand.

I think he’s sweet.

SusansSassySidePony · 30/08/2020 12:58

I've just read all your posts OP and unsurprisingly there is nothing to support your claim about the £10m.
You can be an astute business person and fulfil a service that helps people. There is no contradiction. You're determined to see one and to fabricate facts to support your view. Wouldn't you have been better taking the time to do a HIIT workout to vent your frustration?

Ingridla · 30/08/2020 13:00

Exactly @Longwhiskers14

A pointless thread to put a decent chap down who has done nothing in the slightest to warrant a thread denigrating his work.

KisstheTeapot14 · 30/08/2020 13:01

PS I did also notice he didn't do a warm up/down - he should have included that as its a really important thing for people new to exercise to learn about. Lots of couch to 5 K folk have really damaged their knees forgetting to warm up before hitting the streets....read an article by a knee surgeon who was pulling his hair out. Hard to get fit if you are laid up with a chronic injury.

Cheeeeislifenow · 30/08/2020 13:06

@etphoneshome

That's a really really shitty lie you have just told. Have a word with yourself.

RegularHumanBartender · 30/08/2020 13:07

This thread is hilarious 🤣 You would have had lots of support if you had started a thread about a female celebrity, OP. You can't be mean to or about a man though, that makes you a bad woman. God forbid you be meeean. Laughable.

switswoo81 · 30/08/2020 13:08

Oh my god. Depending on your views he might not be a hero in the traditional sense of the word but to call his parenting and marriage into question is disgusting.

Talklessmilemore · 30/08/2020 13:09

I clearly remember warming up every single PE with Joe but I guess one person's warm up is another's work out Confused
