To think going on holiday at the moment is selfish and unnecessary

OverTheRainbow88 · 30/08/2020 07:59

I think it’s totally unnecessary and selfish for people to go abroad on holiday at the moment. I’m not talking about people that need to go abroad for other reasons, such as ,work or to see ill relatives etc. I think getting our children back to school trumps a holiday.
However, lots of family and friends are going away abroad for holidays, do others agree with me or am I being unreasonable?

Some people would love for this to happen, it would make their xenophobic wet dreams come true. Wait till they see how that plays out with no deal Brexit

Yup, completely agree with this.

RegularHumanBartender · 30/08/2020 12:48

Did you not get absolutely loads of sun up until very recently in this country? It was boiling hot for weeks

This is driving me mad! The UK is a big place. Just because it's been hot and sunny in one place, doesn't mean it was in another. Oh and the brief spell of good weather we did have here, lots of us worked throughout, 5 days a week as normal. We didn't get the opportunity to dick about in the sun. Broaden your bloody horizons a bit eh?

Parker231 · 30/08/2020 12:50

It might of been boiling hot for weeks but when you’re inside working from 8-6 you don’t get the benefit.

tinytemper66 · 30/08/2020 13:07

I am going to London next weekend...3rd visit in 6 weeks. Want to get away but not abroad so driving up. Will walk as much as we can but will use the tube where necessary.

DdraigGoch · 30/08/2020 13:21
@DdraigGoch "The key bit is how you get there. If you are travelling by plane or on public transport then you potentially have a superspreader event. By car is less risky."

But what about climate change? Surely bus/train > car??
Normally, yes. Packing oneself onto a crush-loaded train to the seaside is not the best idea in the current climate though

SantaClaritaDiet · 30/08/2020 13:22

@LEELULUMPKIN

So many MH professionals on here telling us what is and isn't good for our MH.

Surprised that there is a MH crisis with so many "experts" here on MN.

Pretty sure most adults are able to know what is good or not for their OWN MH.

Being able to do something about it is another matter.

Careful! You might invoke the wrath of the Covid travel police Grin.

I mean, it was only a short time ago people were up in arms about Londoners going to their holiday homes and infecting idyllic rural England with our grimy city corona germs (all 8 million of us have a second home, obvs). Now the whole of the UK seems to be swapping a fortnight in the Med for a mini break in London.

So selfish Wink

SantaClaritaDiet · 30/08/2020 13:25

There are currently people having a lovely blissful holiday on a beautiful sunny beach, and brits miserably shivering on a muddy campsite to celebrate this bank holiday.

I know which one I'd rather be.

LEELULUMPKIN · 30/08/2020 13:41

@SantaClaritaDiet That has been my point all along.

Sick of other's judging what is acceptable or not.

Only those whose mental health is suffering and are able to go on holiday are the ones who truly know what will benefit them.

Walkaround · 30/08/2020 13:42

Nobody is selfless. A lot of selfish people do like to justify their own selfish decisions by criticising the decisions of others, though. There are seriously negative economic and societal consequences to not eating out in restaurants and not travelling away from your home, too. Some selfish people try to disguise their fear by making claims of moral superiority - eg claiming that nobody who eats out is doing any good at all, it can only possibly be for their own selfish pleasure, to nobody’s benefit but their own. I fail to see in what way that makes these moralisers better than people who attempt to justify themselves by claiming they “needed” a holiday.

SantaClaritaDiet · 30/08/2020 13:49

people who attempt to justify themselves by claiming they “needed” a holiday.

What attempt? We do need a holiday, mopping miserably at home is helping no one and would be horribly unfair on my kids at the best of times.
We just go through months of "lockdown", not such a big deal on adults but a much bigger shock for kids.

I bloody damn need a holiday, and I prefer a quiet one in a nice place with guaranteed weather than a crowded UK site of any kind.

If the UK closes their border for good, I am relocating!

Corono · 30/08/2020 13:52

Don't need to justify myself, I'm off on holiday on Saturday, can't wait and will thoroughly enjoy it.

I'm breaking no laws.

Judge away!

But you are breaking MN laws.

You know those that people like to make up and then force on everyone else.

spreadyourwingsandfly1 · 30/08/2020 14:00

Teacher here just got back from 2 weeks abroad. How doesme being abroad affect your child returning to School?

Corono · 30/08/2020 14:03

I know @PourMeADrink, don't know me but because they won't do it, I'm selfish? 🙄

Corono · 30/08/2020 14:04

@spreadyourwingsandfly1 good for you, I think you've got a hard year ahead and thoroughly deserve a break!

If the country was suddenly added to the quarantine list, then if you’ve just got back, you would miss the beginning of term so yes if you taught children they would be affected.

I was referring to our children, as this generation, my children aren’t actually of school age; but I feel like getting all school aged children back to education is vital.

But it didn't happen?

Also teaching is a profession, or a vocation!

Corono · 30/08/2020 14:10

*not a vocation

Corono · 30/08/2020 14:14

If that's the issue @OverTheRainbow88, should teachers not eat out, socialise, go to pubs etc, because any of these could get a CV positive case and they'd have to self isolate?

Bloody hell, who would be a teacher?

Bwlch · 30/08/2020 14:14

There are currently people having a lovely blissful holiday on a beautiful sunny beach, and brits miserably shivering on a muddy campsite to celebrate this bank holiday.

Judging from the "It's too hot!" threads that always appear whenever the mercury tops 16, there will be plenty of takers for the muddy campsite.

Me? I'm writing this while sat under a tree 20 feet from the Med. 35 feels like 39 according to my weather app.

Reception kids here are not due back for another 2 weeks at the earliest.

Anyone of their teacher could be coming back safely today without any impact on anyone whatsoever. If that was such a concern.

😂

strangely enough, the "too hot" camp is very vocal against rain too! There's no pleasing these people... I tell you, they need a real holiday, they would feel so much better and relax after one...

StillGardening · 30/08/2020 14:21

Can’t see how going abroad is worse than all the people from all over who have piled into the SW, Lake District, Wales etc and ignored covid restrictions (Appreciate it’s not everyone).

Personally think everyone should have to stay within 50miles of home.
