To think there’s no such thing as a warm, waterproof and stylish coat?

Happy to be proved wrong!

Spent hours online looking last night and came up with nothing. I’m looking for something high quality, happy to spend some money if it will last. Needs to be good for the school run but smart enough that I could also wear it to work...

Hemp Tailor (formerly Hoodlamb). You can often get their past seasons' coats for a lot less.

DontBeShelfish

I bought this one from M&S last year, they've had similar coats a few years running, so might get them in again this winter (or eBay). It's warm and waterproof, not as warm as an NF Artic Parka, but not as expensive either.

I got a Seasalt coat about 7 years ago. It's completely waterproof, I've washed & re-proofed it a couple of times & I think it will last me a few years yet. It's padded & pretty warm (I do need a fleece underneath when it's really bitterly cold, but I am a very cold person). It's knee length on me (I'm 5'3"). Totally worth the money. Not sure if it's "stylish" but it's certainly not scruffy, even after 7 years of serious daily use at least 6 months of the year, lots of walking with a buggy & going to my office job.

namechangetheworld · 30/08/2020 15:08

@TellYourCatISaidHi Do you mind me asking if that comes up big or small? It's lovely and exactly what I'm looking for.

Graffitiqueen · 30/08/2020 15:09

YANBU, ime you can only have two out of the three criteria!

Autumnleavesinmyheart · 30/08/2020 15:12

@Namechangeforcoat I like that! It would like awful on me though Grin

@CallarMorvern thanks, I hadn't thought of M&S

You know, I'm coming around to the idea of a Seasalt coat. I don't think they score that highly on 'stylish' but they are not hideous either, and so practical. Apart from the Janelle, are there any other Seasalt coats people would recommend?

Eg the Plant Hunter looks... ok? Quite nice colours too.

I have two protected species coats and love them both. Look lovely on and totally waterproof. Not keen on their winter parka though.

inappropriateraspberry · 30/08/2020 15:14

I have this. Trespass 'Everyday' coat. It's got a tweedy herringbone pattern, is warm but not too puffy and waterproof. The fur can be removed from the hood so it looks smarter. Has done me well on school runs etc.

And you can tighten the waist for more shape if wanted!

Muser314 · 30/08/2020 15:17

That big blue lampsahde coat is awful. YOu'd be better off wearing a skinny thermo ball under a wook coat. Or, just getting a slimmer fit insulated coat. When it lashes rain pull a disposable poncho out of your bag.

Nothing necessitates that big blue ankle length lampshade shape coat. MY EYES

looperb · 30/08/2020 15:19

@SchnitzelVonKrumm I really feel the cold though!

MadameMinimes · 30/08/2020 15:20

What about 66 degrees north?
I really like their lined raincoat in the orange colour.

www.66north.com/women/jackets-and-vests/arnarholl-womens-rain-coat/?item=C11601-233&size=M

But they also have goretex coats and parkas if you’re looking for something really warm.

Fiveletters · 30/08/2020 15:22

Not sure if anyone has said Whistles but my Cleo parka from last winter is amazing! So cosy.

looperb · 30/08/2020 15:22

It's louder than I would wear but I would choose namechangetheworld coat over a sensible ubiquitous mac any day!

wigglerose · 30/08/2020 15:29

I'd like one with a hood that isn't so big I can't see a fucking thing when I have it up.

greengreengrass14 · 30/08/2020 15:31

would recommend seasalt or rohan.

some in sale in both companies at the moment
www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/sale/all-sale/river-sea-waterproof-tin-cloth-coat-running-stitch-fathom.htm

seasalt wind and weather tested in cornwall

comes with a guarantee

even the thinner ones are good in a larger size as you can fit a warm jumper underneath

inappropriateraspberry · 30/08/2020 15:31

I have a small head and always need a good with that adjustable bit over the top.

It's in the sale too! If only I was a size XS...

I'm in Scotland and usually spend Saturday mornings watching my sons playing footy. Winter time can be freezing & very wet, so I have the Didrikson nadine parka. Not sure it's exactly stylish, but it's bloody warm and won't let in a drop of rain.

Howallergic · 30/08/2020 16:19

I find umbrellas useful Grin to keep myself dry.

toomanyspiderplants · 30/08/2020 16:27

@CeibaTree. I was looking at that last night.....its a bit more than I would normally spend.but if it lasts it woukd be worth it. .,have you ordered from them before?

CeibaTree · 30/08/2020 16:33

@toomanyspiderplants I have slippers from them that I've had for years and they are great quality. And last year I got a pair of the 'woodsman' boots that are so warm and comfy. I've never ordered clothing from them before, but the reviews are good - it's a joint (late) mothers day and birthday present from my DH, so I didn't feel too guilty about the price haha. We are on their mailing list though and got a code for 15% off and free delivery - can PM it to you if you like :)

Except umbrellas are completely pointless if it's really windy or you need your hands free for children/buggies/dog leads.

I live by the coast. I can count on one hand the number of times I've been able to safely use an umbrella Grin Rain normally means wind, which means umbrellas end up broken and inside out within minutes.
