To think there’s no such thing as a warm, waterproof and stylish coat?

Happy to be proved wrong!

Spent hours online looking last night and came up with nothing. I’m looking for something high quality, happy to spend some money if it will last. Needs to be good for the school run but smart enough that I could also wear it to work...

fastfood that parka is indeed very stylish but it's not waterproof; just water-resistant. Fine for cities, I expect, and made of fab fabrics, but not practical in, for example, Scottish rain.

As previous posters have said, it all depends on what the OP means by 'waterproof' and 'stylish', and on where the OP intends to wear the coat. If in the country, then Schoffels is a good quality brand and better cut than some: example here www.houseofbruar.com/l-malvern-coat-olive-green/?src=webshp If in the city, then what about - eywateringly expensive but practical and - IMHO - fairly stylish trenchcoat by Mackintosh of Ireland, example here: www.houseofbruar.com/lds-sb-belt-mac-terracotta-l-brown/?src=webshp

@SchnitzelVonKrumm

I've never understood the love here for Protected Species - however waterproof they are, the styling looks like Per Una. I've got a 10-year-old Didriksons parka which keeps the rain off, but I wouldn't say it was stylish. The lack of choice mystifies me - why are so many raincoats so short? Are other people's legs impervious to water?

If I won the lottery I'd buy this for spring and autumn and this for when it's cold.

That's what waterproof overtrousers are for. Of course they don't tend to be stylish either but I'm always going to opt for being dry over being fashionable. Though my issue is having short legs, it is very hard to find overtrousers in my size with short enough legs.

This might not be everyone's idea of stylish but I have this Lighthouse raincoat but the pink is more dusky, less vivid in real life.

The drawstring give it a bit of a waist and it is fairly warm...but not as warm as a big bulky coat would be.

Another vote for Seasalt. Not stylish, but I’d rather be warm and dry. The Janelle one is amazing for dog walking/child wrangling in torrential rain, but it does make me feel like I should have a headscarf on and a collection of corgis.

Auridon4life · 30/08/2020 12:50

Fleece lined double breasted trench coat?

Choppedupapple · 30/08/2020 12:57

I’ve bought a lush waterproof, hooded coat from Jules, however I feel like such a grump in it!

I’m thinking of a long black or dark grey military style coat for winter and either teaming it with my mary poppins style hat or umbrella when it rains

icebubbles · 30/08/2020 12:58

Barbour do some lovely ones. Work for the nursery and work one for me!

CerealBeacon · 30/08/2020 13:02

To be honest, I think the Seasalt ones are easily as 'stylish' as those Didrikson/other Scandi brands that get a lot more love on here. And I agree about the baffling affection for Protected Species which just look like 'generic thin raincoat' in the same three colours to me.

Namechangeforcoat · 30/08/2020 13:02

I bought this last winter. It's lush, but not waterproof. Piccy is not meGrin

I bought a lovely long line navy Gant jacket last winter, no hood though but extremely warm.

CarlottaValdez · 30/08/2020 13:14

I like my protected species coat because it’s very waterproof- really good cuffs and neck and hood. It’s also nice and lightweight so good for commuting. I like the way it looks but nobody has ever accused me of being stylish so I’m probably wrong!

I'm so sorry but that coat totally makes me think of this: i.pinimg.com/originals/a7/95/41/a79541866607632a1d9de93c06724ba1.jpg

Layers are the best way to stay warm - you don't need to get a padded, waterproof jacket for that. I'm a dog walker and go out in all weathers - I swear by the following:

Top half - a long sleeved, merino base layer. Then some form of thin fleece over the top. If it's really cold I'll add an insulated gilet or thin down jacket, then a waterproof over the top if it's wet.

On my bottom half, I'll wear merino leggings underneath waterproof trousers - not overtrousers, but Craghoppers Kiwi pro all-in-ones. If it's not wet, I'll go for a fleece-backed soft-shell trouser instead. They're warm and water-repellent and wash well.

It may not be stylish but I'd much rather be warm and dry. Nothing more pointless than looking good but freezing your tits off because you're wet and cold and windswept.

Confrontayshunme · 30/08/2020 13:34

I have a lined Seasalt waterproof and it is brilliant. I got it in the sale, it's a lovely dark green, the sleeves cover my wrists for cycling and pushing a buggy in the wet. And it is definitely prettier than my ski jacket.

IgiveupallthenamesIwantedareg0 · 30/08/2020 13:37

I bought a classic Burberry trench coat years ago. It is still stylish, you can wear it buttoned up with the belt tied front or back, or unbuttoned. It has a collar perfect for packing a scarf into. It has a removable lining which is great for the colder days. I still wear it and wouldn't want to miss it.

PickAChew · 30/08/2020 13:39

I have a barbour coastal jacket that is smart but properly water and windproof. I wore it for most of last winter apart from when it was properly freezing when I bundled up in my scruffy old berghaus parka which is longer and thicker (and so stiff that I can't bend over in it)

LakieLady · 30/08/2020 13:53

I have the SeaSalt Janelle coat and it is really warm but not bulky

I've got one, too, and it's the best coat I've ever owned. Really wind- and waterproof, very light, long enough to keep my knees dry, decent pockets, a pleat instead of a slit for legroom so the wind doesn't blow rain on the back of your legs, and a liftetime guarantee. What's not to like?

My only reservation is that because I live in a town with a Seasalt shop, they're a bit ubiquitous here. When the heatwave broke and it was suddenly much cooler and very wet, every other woman in my local Waitrose seemed to be wearing one.

I don't find that when I go to other towns in the area though, so I think that's just a local thing.

TOFO1965 · 30/08/2020 14:24

Moncler is ace for caper like this.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 30/08/2020 14:43

Natsuku waterproof overtrousers are great if you're out hiking but I'm not sure they're good for the school run but smart enough that I could also wear it to work as per the OP.

Muser314 · 30/08/2020 14:45

@Autumnleavesinmyheart I've spent years looking for this and gave up. Now i wear a thermoball style of coat under a smarter wool coat.. So two coats is the way to go.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 30/08/2020 14:46

The problem with the Lulu Lemon Winter Warrior and the like is that they're designed for arctic temperatures and so too warm for a UK winter, even in northern parts.

EleanorOalike · 30/08/2020 14:47

I’ve got a gorgeous, Wine coloured black fur lined Donna Karan one that’s very stylish and does the job perfectly and a Black chevron padded down North Face knee length coat that’s also decent and well cut.

Have you paid TK Maxx a visit. They sometimes have lots of options that might suit your preferences.

I'm sorry but that is utterly hideous.
DontBeShelfish · 30/08/2020 14:55

I want something bright red, with a hood, fitted at the waist, length to the knee, in a size 18. Oh, and waterproof. That's my problem - I am looking for something so specific that it doesn't exist. Grin
