Are you sending your children into school with hand sanitiser?

Just that. Many of my friends are sending their children in with hand gel which I totally get.

DC's school aren't really allowing anything to be brought into school. They can take a coat, book bag and pe bag and that's it. No backpacks, drinks bottles, infants aren't allowed to take pack lunch boxes but juniors are!

They haven't mentioned whether hand sanitiser should be brought in so I assumed it wasn't allowed.

Dc went back to school for a few weeks end of term. They had sanitiser stations there and they were encouraged to wash their hands at the sink and use gel very regularly so tbh I didn't feel they needed to take any.

seems trivial but are schools expecting primary school age children to bring it in also? Or discouraging it?

Obviously I can ask but mine aren't due back for over a week. No one regularly in the school yet I don't think!

underneaththeash · 29/08/2020 21:48

Only the child that has been told to by their school. Other 2 no.

bellinisurge · 29/08/2020 21:49

Yes. School has asked us to. I would anyway

unchienandalusia · 29/08/2020 21:50

Our (prep) school have said to bring in your own if you're sensitive to the school provided stuff. Which both my kids are. It's proper paper cut finder. So mine have a small bottle of carer sensitive skin sanitizer in their school bags.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 29/08/2020 21:56

I’ve got one at primary, one at secondary, and one at college. All carry some with them at the moment, and will probably continue to do so going forward.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 29/08/2020 21:56

Secondary school, yes because she uses public transport to get there and also she's told me that there aren't enough toilets/sinks and if every child tried to wash their hands between lessons they'd be queuing for hours.

Primary school no, she walks to get there and it's a much smaller school so much more opportunity to wash their hands regularly. I think sometimes if you get too used to using sanitiser you don't wash your hands enough.

Passmethecrisps · 29/08/2020 22:01

I bought us all personalised bottles which have little clips to attach to lunch bags. I have one I wear on my lanyard also.

My primary aged eldest says there are bottles at school and they are encouraged to wash very frequently. She is clearly also using her own as it smells nicer than the school stuff. Nursery child is the same.

My school has massive bottles with pumps at every single entry and every classroom has smaller bottles and wipes if that is preferred. Many also use their own although I do ask them to do it openly where I can see rather than claiming to have just done it.

I can’t see why a school would prevent it.

northprincess · 29/08/2020 22:47

@PaperMonster

Yes. She has sensory issues and have bought one she can tolerate.
Can I ask what you've bought? My dc has sensory issues and hand sanitizer is a real battle.
MrsAvocet · 29/08/2020 23:35

That sounds like a good idea @Passmethecrisps. Could I ask you where you got the personalised bottles from please? There's bound to be kids picking up the wrong one or leaving them places so it would be good to have something easily identifiable.

Passmethecrisps · 30/08/2020 01:03

I got mine from people using Facebook to raise funds for a charity. But they look like this

Are you sending your children into school with hand sanitiser?
catsarecute · 30/08/2020 01:18

DS's school have said there will be hand sanitizer dispensers by the door in every classroom. They haven't asked us to send any in, although I will be sending him in with a small bottle in case school run out, especially after I saw a BBC report this week saying that some schools have been asked to be sparing with the hand sanitizer Shock I bought a big bottle off Amazon too for a tenner, so I can refill his little bottle.

Emeraldshamrock · 30/08/2020 01:28

Yes it was a request from the school.
I added a pack of tissues and some viral wipes if needed and a zip lock bag.
My older DC 11 is equipped with a face visor, her choice.

manicinsomniac · 30/08/2020 01:39

No for the youngest because I'm at the same school as her and know there are wall mounted dispensers in every classroom and corridor.

Yes for the older two because they go to school by train and I'm not sure what provision will be in their school when they get there.

YayGlitter · 30/08/2020 01:46

I am, because I have sensitive skin and DD has sensory issues. I know from last term I can't use the one my school provides and I don't know what one DDs school are using, so I bought some I know we can use.

@northprincess, If it helps after trying quite a few DD likes the Superdrug own Strawberry and Raspberry hand gel best, which personally I hate the smell of as it's sickly sweet but she likes coz it doesn't smell like gel, she can also cope with their Aloe Vera one and their sensitive one. (DS and my siblings thankfully will use any brand so the other bottles we bought weren't wasted)

managedmis · 30/08/2020 01:46

Nope.

They wash their hands when they get home. At school they have extra hand washing and gel for use too. Packed lunch as usual. They are kept in their groups though.

VandalisedVegetables · 30/08/2020 02:00

Yes but she and most of her friends have always had a small bottle of hand gel. The toilets are over crowed and she's lucky if she gets five mins to actually eat her lunch. I know a dinner lady who works at the same school and I thought dd was exaggerating about not having time to eat but she really wasn't.

They're eating they lunch in bubbles and in zones so hopefully it's not so bad as there'll only 270 trying to get food and seats instead of 600+

Stompythedinosaur · 30/08/2020 02:23

Our school has asked us not to send hand sanitizer in but the county council has said kids won't be allowed on thr bus with hand sanitizer and tissues. I've bought a teeny bottle to fit in a pocket and told them not to get it out at school.

megletthesecond · 30/08/2020 02:28

Yes. One secondary has specifically asked pupils to take some. I'm sending my other child with some anyway.

starlet14 · 30/08/2020 09:33

Thanks all. Mine aren't back for over a week so no one at the school to ask yet.

I'm not sure what to do. Soap and water is much more effective and they were washing their hands god knows how many times a day before lockdown and also when mine went back for a few weeks.

There's not been or a no or yes either way. School are discouraging anything being brought in other than the bare basics. They aren't even allowed drinks bottles which is mad!

DominaShantotto · 30/08/2020 10:51

Our school have also got a setup where they have sinks and toilets in every classroom (legacy of when the building was built but bloody hell it's been handy these days!) but know that the sanitiser can cause issues with some kids so we have the choice of them sanitising when they come in or using sink soap and water.

DD2 in particular has eczema so we'll be going the soap and water route - poor teacher as DD2 has taken the "sing happy birthday twice" advice very very much to heart and we're all still getting rousing renditions of it from the bathroom constantly!

Spiderseason · 30/08/2020 11:21

I think the most important thing we can send them into school with is...

Short nails.

Nails Harbour germs. Cut their nails!

HorsePellets · 30/08/2020 11:43

No because I’m pretty sure the youngest’s school will confiscate it, and the eldest’s haven’t asked (but may send it for them now upon reflection).

year5teacher · 30/08/2020 11:50

We are allowing parents to send it in, but honestly I’m not sure when the kids will use it - the only time they would might be if they’ve just sneezed or put their hand in their mouth or something during a lesson 🤔 and I would have to check the alcohol content on all the bottles which then means touching the bottle or getting close enough to read the fine print. So not ideal. I’ve provided some for the classroom for them to use if needed.

lyralalala · 30/08/2020 11:51

@Roswellconspiracy

Yes. Its on the uniform and pencil case list. They have strike cards and if they dont have all the uniform/kit they get a strike. 3 strikes equals a detention

Lovely way to treat people who have either -
lost friends or family to civid
Lost their jobs

In debt due to interest after their mortgage holiday

In debt after waiting three months fir self employment packages.

Unable to go shopping due to shielding.

Delivery times delayed thanks to covid

And generally just skint cos not even the fsm vouchers worked properly

Have delayed purchasing due to uncertainty as cant afford to waste money

Or just have parents who don't give a shit - kids with crap parents have been utterly forgotten with all the "clear pencil cases" and the likes rules.
year5teacher · 30/08/2020 11:51

OP I am shocked you’re not allowed to send in drinks bottles?!?
