To think the hairdresser has totally messed my hair up?

I am naturally auburn but fancied a change to strawberry blonde/peach. When I went in the hairdresser, we will call her J, said she would need much longer to achieve that colour so I would need to come back. She also kind of talked me out of doing it, saying it would be a lot if root maintenance. She suggested I instead get loads of highlights with a strawberry blonde coloured toner through it to make it look like I had lots of that colour through my hair (pic attached, the one I took to them). She then said I'd need to go with another hairdresser due to availability.

Well see pics of how my hair actually looks. I feel like crying because it just looks like blonde highlights theough my auburn hair. I was looking forward to some peachy vibrancy but it doesnt look that way at all. I havent cried since I was about 17 over my hair but it is not what I expected from the discussion we had. it was really expensive too! AIBU?

Also any hairdressers to advise.

To go to strawberry blonde from auburn would mean bleach then a colour over the top which is really high maintenance (my own hair is orange). It's an all or nothing type of colour.

Happyheartlovelife · 30/08/2020 14:50

Bleach London do some very vibrant toners

My hairdresser loves them. I did bright orange and he suggested using it to top up

Inkpaperstars · 30/08/2020 14:52

The trouble with getting a colour like the Pinterest pics when it isn't your natural colour or very close to it, is that at best if you're lucky it looks good for about 48 hours, then it looks like broken straw with a fake orangey tint for about three years

Happyheartlovelife · 30/08/2020 14:57

I show my hairdresser photos all the time and he tells me how it's all lighting. Wigs and extensions!!!

It seems social media is well known for that. Making it unachievable.

Also some harsh comments on here about the OP's original request, it is a gorgeous colour. As women, do we really have to desire to have styles which are subtle/"flattering"? Do we have to blend in and fade away? Can't we wish to be vibrant and stand out, even if it affects our conventional beauty and isn't (heaven help us) "flattering"?

I meant to say attached is a picture of my hair, I love it. I'm naturally dark brown and have been lots of different colours. A nice warm chocolate brown with warm honey highlights makes me the most attractive but it doesn't make me feel like me! I bloody love my hair and its bold statement.

KarmaStar · 30/08/2020 21:01

You definitely did not get what is in the picture,it depends on whether she explained that it was not achievable before the work began.
But,your hair colour is really lovely and maybe you'll grow to like it?
It really is not as horrible as you think op.

Sceptre86 · 30/08/2020 21:08

It isn't what you asked for but the hairdresser did tell you you wouldn't be able to achieve that in the time slot booked. I would have asked for another slot where they could do it. I think your hair looks quite nice, it isn't styled in the pics you have uploaded. Once you straighten it I think it will look even better.

TatianaBis · 31/08/2020 12:13

If you wanted her to cover over some of the blonde highlights with copper highlights that could be done quite easily.

Maria53 · 31/08/2020 19:36

Well, er, I took matters into my own hands....

I used Burnt Peach London semi permanent dye on it. It has turned out quite patchy in parts although I feel a lot of relief at being rid of bits of brassy blonde.

Not great overall so I'll need to wait for it to wash out soon hopefully! I'll need to look for a new hairdresser and look for one I really feel is giving me an honest analysis and helping me to get what I really want.

Such a shame that you paid to get your hair coloured then ended up redoing it yourself at home

hastingsmua1 · 31/08/2020 19:43

How much did you pay the salon?

Maria53 · 31/08/2020 19:44

Better pic under the light.

Too right it is. I feel like it was money done the drain! Definitely not going back. When I was in there someone else was getting theirs redone following a complaint.

A shocking amount @hastingsmua1. I dont want to admit it out loud, it was honestly extortionate.

Oh dear. For future reference it’s worth complaining to the salon first, as they could either correct it or offer a partial (or full) refund. I’m not sure if you have any recourse now that you’ve dyed it, but would be worth leaving them an honest review?

Maria53 · 31/08/2020 20:27

I think I will leave them a review yes. Will do that tonight.

I actually had to take a half day to get it done and their weekends are fully booked at the moment. But yes very disappointing all round.

Ooh, I like the new finish.

BigBlondeBimbo · 31/08/2020 20:59

I like what you've done with it op and it doesn't look a million miles away from the second insta pic you posted, imo. Shame you had to do it yourself!

LioneIRichTea · 31/08/2020 21:00

Looks great OP, I knew you’d get a better colour with a box dye Wink

TatianaBis · 31/08/2020 21:53

It would have been more sensible to ask the salon to cover the blonde highlights.

Maria53 · 31/08/2020 22:13

No doubt it would have been more sensible. But I am on holiday and once home wont be able to get into the salon for a while, plus the stylist i wanted isnt available for weeks. I dont want to get that stylist i had again and would rather move on.

I've just left a review where I laid everything out and said I dont plan to return. I half expect them to get in touch, we'll see.

I think the key for some slightly out there colour is to find a salon that has a reputation for it.

I don't colour my hair but people go out of their way to visit the salon I go to for rainbow, mermaid, unicorn or peachy hair. I sometimes feel a bit old and frumpy as pretty young people leave looking pretty spectacular.

Maria53 · 31/08/2020 23:57

Yeah @PickAChew I tried to get an appointment with a salon who actually has the title peach in their name. This was after seeing my friend's amazing peach hair, but they have now said they are taking no new customers for all of 2020!

I'm going to try Rainbow Room next as they are known for pretty bold hair.

I do agree with previous poster, what you have looks better than what you wanted - in my opinion your hair is not ruined

However, it’s not what you wanted but they did talk you into something else. I’d go back and say that the end result is too far removed from what you asked for. Either a refund or do what you want. Yes, it would take quite some time. Maybe two visits and yes, you’d significant need root maintenance as it’s far from your natural colour.

Cazza6474 · 01/09/2020 00:12

The last one is my colour i went from red to ginger usually brown
Only bleached once ho every 4 weeks for roots
