To think the hairdresser has totally messed my hair up?

I am naturally auburn but fancied a change to strawberry blonde/peach. When I went in the hairdresser, we will call her J, said she would need much longer to achieve that colour so I would need to come back. She also kind of talked me out of doing it, saying it would be a lot if root maintenance. She suggested I instead get loads of highlights with a strawberry blonde coloured toner through it to make it look like I had lots of that colour through my hair (pic attached, the one I took to them). She then said I'd need to go with another hairdresser due to availability.

Well see pics of how my hair actually looks. I feel like crying because it just looks like blonde highlights theough my auburn hair. I was looking forward to some peachy vibrancy but it doesnt look that way at all. I havent cried since I was about 17 over my hair but it is not what I expected from the discussion we had. it was really expensive too! AIBU?

Also any hairdressers to advise.

People must think hairdressers are magicians.

Yep. Your hair looks quite dark. To get the hair in the photo it could have to be completely bleach stripped out first. Your hairdresser told you that this would take a long time and be very high maintenance and she was right. It vwould also have probably wrecked your hair. I don't blame you for being unsatisfied with the hair you ended up with, it doesn't look great but the colour you wanted would need a very specialist colour salon.

PurpleFlower1983 · 29/08/2020 19:37

That’s nothing like what you asked for and I would complain/go back.

Waveysnail · 29/08/2020 19:45

Did you go to her for the one appointment and she said she could do highlights but if you wanted compete colour change you would need to rebook so went with highlights ?

IwishIwasyoda · 29/08/2020 19:51

Hi OP
It isn't a disaster. It isn't what you had your heart set on but it looks fine. Not amazing. fine. But I don't think it helps going with random pictures to the hairdressers - sometimes a style or colour just won't suit you, will damage your hair, or need loads of maintenance. I would just accept it and next time you go to the hairdressers go with a general idea of what you want and listen to their advice and expertise. That's what I've done for 20+ years and I've never been disappointed (even though I've had loads of different styles)

GabsAlot · 29/08/2020 19:52

she said she couldnt do it and suggested something else you said yes i dont really understand

Angelina82 · 29/08/2020 19:54

Your hair colour does not in any way resemble what you asked for. It doesn’t look to be in great condition either. I’d be very disappointed too and would have refused to pay.

FOKKYFC · 29/08/2020 19:59

I see a lot of posts from hairdressers saying that customers come in with a unrealistic expectation of how long things take, especially without seriously damaging the hair - I think she's right that a colour change like that would have taken quite a few sessions, lots of maintenance, and was probably right to talk you out of it. I think your hair looks good and really isn't a disaster. If you're unhappy about the colour you could probably ask to have that taken care of, but I certainly wouldn't go in all guns blazing.

PickAChew · 29/08/2020 20:01

I would have thought you would need your hair bleaching pretty light to achieve that shade.

Livelovebehappy · 29/08/2020 20:02

She should have been more honest perhaps and said not possible. People will see a picture online or somewhere and take it to the hairdresser stating they want it exactly the same, not taking into account that it depends on your current hair colour and also whether it has old colour in which will react differently with any hair dye.

AldiAisleofCrap · 29/08/2020 20:03

I thought before I enlarged the pictures that the last one was how your hair ended up and first pics were pre hair dye. You have had a lucky escape @Maria53 that colour is awful, your highlites look nice.

oreshina · 29/08/2020 20:05

It's not like the picture but it looks nicer imo.

Peachy1381 · 29/08/2020 20:11

No expert on hair but it seems to me like the hairdresser was trying to tell you that what you wanted wasn't possible in the time they had available and perhaps wasn't really right for your hair.

From the picture you've shown it seems like that colour would have needed an all-over lightening, which can take a few sessions, before the toner.

I once went to the hairdresser and asked what it would take for me a brunet to go white blonde. Was told that it would take several bleachings over two or more sessions, and a toner. The result would depend on what colours I'd previously had on my hair and the over all condition of hair to withstand bleach. It would be a lot of root maintenance and I'd need to be super careful with regular conditioning treatments. Didn't try and detract me but was also super honest about how to get that style.

For what it's worth your hair looks really nice. I get that it's not what you wanted but I think maybe your expectations weren't necessarily reasonable ones to begin with.

Staffy1 · 29/08/2020 20:19

It's not what you wanted, but it looks lovely!

MawnyStannit · 29/08/2020 20:20

For what it’s worth I think your hair colour now is absolutely gorgeous. It’s got lots of interest and tones, whereas the pic you brought with you looks quite flat, almost like a box colour. Strawberry blonde (ginger, essentially) and peach are two different hair colours by the way.

Whenwillthisbeover · 29/08/2020 20:22

I like is better than the picture, sorry op if u didn’t want to hear that, It
It suits you.

AbbieFB · 29/08/2020 20:25

I think it looks lovely, I have hair envy! I think the problem is that you visualised something different when she described it to you after explaining your chosen look wasn't achievable.

I would go back and ask if there's anything they can do to get it closer to the look you wanted.

ILoveFood87 · 29/08/2020 20:26

I'd not be be happy with that go back

GinWithASplashOfTonic · 29/08/2020 20:27

FWIW I prefer you're hair now to the hair you wanted. The photo of the hair you wanted looks really brassy somehow

FOKKYFC · 29/08/2020 20:30

I don't think the Pinterest shade is awful. Some people have that hair colour naturally (whistles airily).

lovelymm · 29/08/2020 20:32

You've got mid brown hair and wanted to be bright ginger strawberry blonde. You've wasted your cash as it looks neither one thing or another.

FOKKYFC · 29/08/2020 20:32

Bloody awful dress though.

PrivateD00r · 29/08/2020 20:42

The picture you showed her isn't peach or strawberry blonde though, it is ginger. A very nice colour but not one people commonly dye their hair to? She let you know it wasn't feasible so you agreed to something else. Give it a good brush and straighten it, I cannot understand why the hairdresser didn't style it! Did they run out of time? What did you actually ask for when you booked?

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 29/08/2020 20:42

You could have achieved that look just by sitting in the sun. You've definitely wasted your money.

Immigrantsong · 29/08/2020 20:44

OP never sit through for an appointment with a hairdresser that is so wishy washy about what she can do for you. Her reply to what you asked for was so clear she did not feel able to deliver. That was your queue to leave and have it done somewhere else.

Your options are:
To ask for a refund, or partial one.
To accept a free follow appointment with someone in the salon that feels up to par to achieve what you want.
To accept it and leave things as they are.
To go somewhere else.
