To think the hairdresser has totally messed my hair up?

I am naturally auburn but fancied a change to strawberry blonde/peach. When I went in the hairdresser, we will call her J, said she would need much longer to achieve that colour so I would need to come back. She also kind of talked me out of doing it, saying it would be a lot if root maintenance. She suggested I instead get loads of highlights with a strawberry blonde coloured toner through it to make it look like I had lots of that colour through my hair (pic attached, the one I took to them). She then said I'd need to go with another hairdresser due to availability.

Well see pics of how my hair actually looks. I feel like crying because it just looks like blonde highlights theough my auburn hair. I was looking forward to some peachy vibrancy but it doesnt look that way at all. I havent cried since I was about 17 over my hair but it is not what I expected from the discussion we had. it was really expensive too! AIBU?

Also any hairdressers to advise.

I think your new colour is still nicer, your hair looks in great shape now while it definitely looks auburn in yesterday's one, it looks quite dry & brittle.

I love the current colour & cut.

SirVixofVixHall · 29/08/2020 22:18

The pic you took in looks like a proper full on redhead, rather than a strawberry blonde, and not at all peach, as it doesn’t have the pinky tone,
I agree your colour now is nothing like the picture. I also agree with pps that it looks lovely. Your natural base colour is stunning.
The red you took in is beautiful, but you would need to lighten your hair significantly to get that. I think what you have is a good compromise, a little bit lighter, with a red tone, and really lovely.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/08/2020 22:19

Going back to your original post OP, you said the hairdresser talked you out of what you asked for originally &

She suggested I instead get loads of highlights with a strawberry blonde coloured toner through it to make it look like I had lots of that colour through my hair

I think she did just this though, didn't she?

Notmoresugar · 29/08/2020 22:19

I think it looks lovely.
If you'd had it done like the picture it surely would have had to be a block colour and I don't think the end effect would have looked so good/natural.
Might be wrong - not a hair dresser!

SchnitzelVon · 29/08/2020 22:19

It’s nowhere near what you asked for but the colour does look lovely. Have you dried it yourself? It’ll looked more vibrant if you do a smooth dry with a big round brush.

NoMoreMrNiceGaius · 29/08/2020 22:19

The picture you asked for requires bleaching and looks very fake. What you have looks alot more natural and classier. I totally understand your disappointment but honestly your final pic looks so much better than the Instagram.

oldperson1 · 29/08/2020 22:20

Agree it’s nothing like the picture ,but to be honest I like it.

summerfruitsrainbow · 29/08/2020 22:23

Fucking hell. Could have brushed it first 🤣

BaconsLaw · 29/08/2020 22:26

I think it looks lovely.

I can post some photos from last year of where a hairdresser really ballsed up my hair to make you feel better if you like 🤣🤣

Thisseatisnotavailable · 29/08/2020 22:27

I can see why you're upset. The colour now, whilst fine, is a bit meh, while you wanted something quite fresh and striking. I think you should properly look around for a colour specialist. But if you're not happy with the result compared to what was described then definitely ask for at least a partial refund.

I'm not a hairdresser but I am in the service industry and I'd much rather someone told me how they felt and gave me a chance to fix a problem rather than go home and complain to friends and never come back.

Maria53 · 29/08/2020 22:32

@summerfruitsrainbow cheeky! I dont know which image you are referring to but my hair was freshly brushed in all these pictures. It is amazing how tousled I permnanetly look brushed or no Grin

The original hairdresser I booked in with is a colour specialist. She then said she was fully booked but this other hairdresser is great...

Since having this done I have learned the hairdresser that actually did my hair is a 'blonde specialist'. She kept talking about how she wants to keep adding blonde and lightening my hair that way. I just want an honest opinion from someone about what can and cant be done.

I really love your new colour Smile

EarringsandLipstick · 29/08/2020 22:54

@Maria53

You haven't answered my question?

In your OP, you indicate the hairdresser suggested something different & you agreed to it.

Based on what you said, the photos match that?

I still think it's fab. Really beautiful & the colour is amazing.

chubbyhotchoc · 29/08/2020 22:54

I really don't like the inspo photo you took. It's the kind of thing that looks ok on a Pinterest photo and terrible in real life. What you got is really soft and pretty and much more flattering. You just need some intensive conditioning as it looks a little dry to me

YardleyX · 29/08/2020 22:54

I don’t know anything about dying hair, but that instagram picture in the OP is bloody awful!

Your hair looks so much better than that 👍🏻

Cissyandflora · 29/08/2020 23:03

I love the highlights you got. Nothing like the picture but really lovely.

user1494055864 · 29/08/2020 23:08

I think the hairdresser did you a massive favour.

Hiccupiscal · 29/08/2020 23:08

Read the whole thread, op, your hair is fabulous. I personally think she did a great job, all things considered! Its better than the original IG pic!

howlathebees · 29/08/2020 23:09

I think it looks really lovely

hastingsmua1 · 29/08/2020 23:17

It definitely looks red in the latest photo!! Maybe the photo previous to that one just looked darker because of lighting etc?

If you do think your natural colour has slightly changed and become more dull, you can get a colour “glossing” service which will make it look more vibrant and amplify the red tone more. It doesn’t involve bleach so won’t ruin the condition of your hair. Not to say that the condition of your hair looks bad - it looks healthy, not sure why others have said it looks damaged!

hastingsmua1 · 29/08/2020 23:17

Also if your friends have a similar natural colour and managed to achieve the colour you want, ask them what their hairdresser did

Theluggage15 · 29/08/2020 23:22

I don’t like the Pinterest photo, the colour looks flat and obviously dyed. Your hair looks great now! You have lovely hair, I’d be well happy if mine looked like yours.

I’ve just been browsing Amazon looking at collagen and wondering if that might improve the texture of my hair!

MsEllany · 29/08/2020 23:26

Why are people saying the insta pic looks ‘bloody awful’? What is it that makes it awful? Evenly coloured and nicely styled - personal preferences don’t make something awful Confused

@Maria53 is the hat pic before or after the colour was added? I don’t think it’s terrible and it’s kind of what she suggested, but at the same time it’s absolutely nothing like your example picture and it sounds like she led you to believe you would at least have a hint of that colour.

Maria53 · 29/08/2020 23:27

I was aware the Pinterest colour was kind if fake looking. I just thought it looked cool and I really wanted to mix up my usual colour/do something a bit out there! I always feel I play it safe/my hairdresser always convinces me not to do a peach colour.

I will look into a glossing service, hadnt heard of that before.

I may still try dyeing over the blonde with a more copper colour as blonde simply wasnt what I asked for or expected to get. But I appreciate the compliments 🙂 I know it doesnt look awful, but just not anything really 'different' as I wanted.

Appreciate the feedback thanks !
