smokers out in street

I live quite near a pub. Until recently this wasn't much of a problem. Since the change the smoking ban though it has been. Although the pub has a garden out the back people tend to go out the front to smoke. We sleep at the front of the house and the noise really carries.

I have found out they have a licence till 12.30am during the week and 1.30am Friday, Sat and Sunday. The noise isn't really raucous but it's fairly constant. Laughing, loud talking. At 12.30am when you're up early the next day its not funny. I am planning to go and talk to the landlord in a friendly way but I don't really know what to say. I don't know him and I'm a bit nervous I suppose. Does anyone have any advice please?

Well I suppose I have to concede that last point cracker. There are other people around, yes, but it is our garden that it backs onto. I am slightly coming to terms with it and only have to resort to ear plugs occasionally. TBH the worst thing at night is drunken laughing which seems to carry more. But I cannot help being upset when my children are playing out in the garden on a Sunday afternoon and there is all sorts of language and topics of discussion over the fence. If it was an actual beer garden - ie a family type thing with swings etc it would be OK but it isn't.

If you don't want to talk face to face with the landlord then why not right a complaint letter. You will probably find you would say what you wanted to say without feeling embarresed?

Yes you see motherfunk that also surprises me that they can't hear us, or can hear us but don't make the logical jump that we can hear them. I realise that they can't see us because there is a wall that is topped by a high fence, covered in ivy and trees/shrubs in front of it. But I was out in the garden with 3yo DD (wasn't so bad because she is little and doesn't understand and DS who is 6 was inside) and there was a man on his mobile for 20 mins having a conversation about his girl friend including intimate details such as when they last had sex and how she says it is all he ever thinks of etc etc and also bad language. Anyway DD was asking who that was talking and I was saying it was a man on the telephone and hasn't he been on a long time - and he just continued on for another 10 mins or so.

cant believe ive missed this thread.
(as a smoker)
i really feel sorry for anyone living near a pub. i would never buy a house near one personally, but im sure its worse now.

my advice would be to move.

Motherfunk I have just read your message where you are talking about these expensive extractoe fans they had in airports to prevent smoke from spreading in airports . I have a vivid recollection of being in airport lounges, gasping for breath and having to use my inhaler due to the vast amounts of smoke in the air. They clearly did not work, however expensive they might be.

as an ex land lady ( left before smoking ban came into force i would advice you to contact your local council. as of Nov 2005 when pub hours changed ( 24 hour drinking) it also meant the councils were resposible for pub liecences. one of the main things that have to be taken adheared to bt publicans is that the surrounding houses are not effected by noise or pollution ( ie cig buts) from the pub. if you do contact the council they will inform the land lord/lady and they will be asked to deal with the matter.
i would imagine that they landlord/lady is not happy with it either as i would not have to go out every morning to sweep fag end off the pavement

smokers should stay in the privacy of a dark room or shed in their back garden... very selfish habit which has no benefit to anyone at all... even the smoker...

Alto I will say thay if you want a spin doctor for a marketing department they are the best qualified... I mean they can actually justify this habit to themselves and others without blinking... now that's amazing
