Buying new school uniform

Notyouraveragecliche · 28/08/2020 20:35

Is it reasonable to buy school uniform despite the last year's still fitting or do you think it's unreasonable to reuse old uniform?

Boring question but me and my partner have different opinions.

Bit of both I think, I take advantage of the offers to get the next size up but I send them in fitting uniform

BuffaloCauliflower · 28/08/2020 20:37

Only need to buy new if the old stuff is too small or wrecked. No point just for the sake of it.

JMG1234 · 28/08/2020 20:40

I wouldn't bother buying unless it's too small or looks very worn. If it doesn't, happy days!

switswoo81 · 28/08/2020 20:41

Yanbu especially this year when last year's one probably wasn't worn out

What on Earth is the point in buying new for no reason?

RedskyAtnight · 28/08/2020 20:44

Why would you (well your DC) not continue to wear their existing uniform if it still fits? Do you (as an adult) buy all new clothes once a year?

Kaktus · 28/08/2020 20:44

Why on earth would you buy new if their existing stuff still fits and is in decent condition? No wonder the planet is fucked!
I had a Clark’s fitting appointment booked for my 2 then tried their school shoes on from last year and they still fit, so I polished them up. I’m not replacing something that doesn’t need replacing.

RedCatBlueCat · 28/08/2020 20:46

DS2 has new shoes because his feet have grown, but nothing else new.
DS1 is moving to secondary. He isnt getting new trousers because his old ones are the correct colour, but everything else is new. I dont get the need for new uniform in September. Buy it when it's needed.

Invisimamma · 28/08/2020 20:47

I'd buy a couple of fresh polo shirts, pair of trousers and a jumper. But if the rest still fits and is in good condition I'd continue to use it.

Unfortunately my ds seems to take a huge growth spurth each summer and his uniform never fits next term so its all new, but his brother does get some hand me downs of good condition items.

BluePeterVag · 28/08/2020 21:02

1.4 million items of wearable school uniform are thrown away each year. We can’t go on like this, it has to change.

Smoothyloopy · 28/08/2020 21:05

What BluePeterVag said. We can't go on like this.

rabbitheadlights · 28/08/2020 21:11

ALL new EVERYTHING uniform, P.E kit, shoes, trainers, bags, stationery, coats every September. I don't know why though, my mum did it and now so do I.

SpeedofaSloth · 28/08/2020 21:16

If it still fits, wear it.
If it doesn't fit and has life left in it, donate it to someone/ somewhere who can use it. We have an excellent local Councillor who has arranged a series of uniform "shopping" events across town, so those who are on their uppers can access free uniform easily.
If it's dead, put it out with the recycling.

whirlwindwallaby · 28/08/2020 21:16

Why would you buy new if the old uniform fits and is in reasonable condition? I don't even understand buying every size. Unless you have a particularly small child so if you bought every second size then clothes would be outworn before they were outgrown. I've bought uniform ready to grow into at back to school time, but then kept it until it's needed.

whirlwindwallaby · 28/08/2020 21:19

Your question doesn't make sense, do I can't vote.

whirlwindwallaby · 28/08/2020 21:19

*so

dementedpixie · 28/08/2020 21:20

Dd is wearing skirts from last year. I replaced shirts as they had yellowed a bit under the arms. Needed new trousers for ds as he grew taller and slimmer compared to last year. Donated old ones to a clothing bank. Blazers and ties reused too

DinoDeb · 28/08/2020 21:23

I wouldn’t buy any uniform for the sake of it...but by the end of the year our uniform is usually too wrecked to look decent and/or too small.

This year ds1 has one jumper and his school coat which still look new and fit. All the rest of it, for all 3, is too small or near-holes in the knees.

eastmidswarwicknightnanny · 28/08/2020 21:26

Whatever fits gets worn and buy bits they need if nothing already that fits I have boxes of uniform now from DS1 that DS2 is wearing also bits other people have given us. All I have brought this yr is 2 new trousers each to have 5 pairs (then the bloody school have said pe 2 days so in kit all day ) and eldest new polo tops, ours went back this wk. Oh and smallest had new shoes as feet had grown but I buy stuff when needed not just because its Sept and will happily have second hand either freebies off other parents or cheaply brought off other parents, alot of uniform is passed around at our school.

Pipandmum · 28/08/2020 21:26

My daughter hasn't grown since she was 12. She's 15 now and is wearing a three year old skirt which was bought second hand, and a two year old blazer also bought second hand. Her sports tops were also second hand and entering fourth year of use. Blouses are two years old, though a few are looking a bit grey. Socks do wear out and go missing, so she'll get a few new ones, and school shoes as she wears them out after a couple terms.
I certainly will not be buying it again new - it would cost almost £300!

Lougle · 28/08/2020 21:27

A mixture - what still fits gets reused (this year their coats are fine, school bags and pencil cases fine, DD1's polo shirts, etc.) and what is too small gets replaced, either new or second hand through Facebook. DD3 starts secondary this year and is using DD2's blazer, PE top, etc., and I've just bought the next size up for DD2.

AlwaysLatte · 28/08/2020 21:30

For a new school I'd have everything new, top to bottom, but for an existing school I just buy new shoes as standard but the rest is only new if outgrown. But I always buy x5 of everything including jumpers so they don't look that worn.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/08/2020 21:31

If it fits I'm not wasting money replacing it! Unless it's stained/ripped obviously.

Picklypickles · 28/08/2020 21:31

I've only got a few new bits of uniform, 2 new jumpers was all ds needed and dd got some new shirts and pinnafores, new shoes for both of them and that's it.
