The object is simply to get rid of your cards, and catch your opponents with as many points as possible. You start with 7 cards and a face-down deck of the rest in the middle. You play it like rummy, trying to get runs or 3/4 of a kind, but you put them down as you go, and other people can add to yours, for example if you put down 4,5,6 of hearts, someone else can add 7 of hearts when it's their turn, as long as they have put down a run or set already.

You pick up at the beginning and discard at the end of your go, but when you discard, you overlap the cards so you can see the discard pile. When it's your go, you can pick up any in the discard pile but you have to take all the cards on top of it as well.

I'm sure the name is a long word, but I can't remember it! Help!

@EggyPegg

As I was typing my response, DS (7) was trouncing DH at Black Jack. I only taught him to play this week, but he's got a real mind for card games.
Yes black jack is what I was thinking of

I call this game Benny. I love how there are different names for the games.

FreeButtonBee · 28/08/2020 23:01

Gin rummy but the cards left on your hand were counted up so it was called 100 up. If you hit 100 you were out.

NataliaOsipova · 28/08/2020 23:03

@TheIckabog We always called it Newmarket as well! No idea why.

19lottie82 · 28/08/2020 23:12

Shithead!

Littlepond · 28/08/2020 23:14

No I have no idea why we call it that either! You’re also the first ever person who also calls it that that I’ve met!

There are lots of variants of Rummy, but the clue here is that you can pick up any card in the discard pile as long as you take the ones above it. That means the discard pile has to be spread slightly so you can see the cards in it. There are only 2 versions of Rummy I know that do this. One is the German variant of Treppenrommé, which I've played with my wife and can recommend as a two-player game. The other is the Australian game of 500 Rum. From the description above, it could be either, but my guess is that it's the latter. Both are described in detail on Wikipedia.

For the record, Gin Rummy is a two-player only game in which 10 cards each are dealt and the score is based on the cards left in the loser's hand, whereas in the two games above, you score for combinations as you lay them out.

Hope that helps.

At church youth club we used to call Shithead 'Poo-legs' instead! I learned the game at the more edgy Girl Guides. Grin

FOJN · 15/04/2022 17:15

The game you've described is exactly how I've played gin rummy.

NewbieDivergent · 15/04/2022 17:18

My nan used to call it Kumkarn.

Rosylarose · 15/04/2022 17:19

It's not gin rummy. That's ten cards, and you can go out when the value of the cards in your hand not in runs or sets is less than 10. There is a version which we call lay down rummy where you lay down your runs/sets as you collect them, and your opponent can lay on to any exposed runs/sets. But it still starts with ten cards and you can only pick off the top of the discard pile.

mrsm43s · 15/04/2022 17:24

I call it Benny.
