The object is simply to get rid of your cards, and catch your opponents with as many points as possible. You start with 7 cards and a face-down deck of the rest in the middle. You play it like rummy, trying to get runs or 3/4 of a kind, but you put them down as you go, and other people can add to yours, for example if you put down 4,5,6 of hearts, someone else can add 7 of hearts when it's their turn, as long as they have put down a run or set already.

You pick up at the beginning and discard at the end of your go, but when you discard, you overlap the cards so you can see the discard pile. When it's your go, you can pick up any in the discard pile but you have to take all the cards on top of it as well.

I'm sure the name is a long word, but I can't remember it! Help!

Phase 10? It's based on the card games mentioned but is an actual (printed) card game itself, like an updated version. Sounds exactly like your description.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 28/08/2020 16:20

It's gin rummy

LipstickTaserrr · 28/08/2020 16:20

When I was young we played a game called spite but I can't even remember the rules and nobody ever knows what I'm talking about so sometimes I wonder if I made it up!

LipstickTaserrr · 28/08/2020 16:21

Google says it's called spite and malice Confused

12309845653ghydrvj · 28/08/2020 16:21

The game you are describing is 7 card gin rummy. Google says it’s also called poker gin or knock poker. Maybe you had a special family name for it?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/08/2020 16:22

We used to play that but think we just called it Rummy

MaskingForIt · 28/08/2020 16:22

I don’t know, but it sounds a bit like Phase 10, which you might enjoy.

Burnout101 · 28/08/2020 16:22

Sorry, just realised the discard pile bit means it's not phase 10.

LilacSloth · 28/08/2020 16:23

I know it as pick-up rummy. Brilliant game - we'd always play it every evening on holiday. Good times Smile

EggyPegg · 28/08/2020 16:33

@NotAQueef

Sounds like a game my sister calls blackjack (not the real 21/blackjack) do certain cards make you miss a go, change direction like UNO?
Definitely not Black Jack (written like that, not Blackjack 21s). Black Jack is mine and DHs favourite. You're right that it's like Uno. No change direction cards in the rules that we play, but a Black Jack makes your opponent pick up 5, 2's pick up 2, you can put any 2 or BJ on top of any 2 or BJ, and the opposition picks up the collective number. However Red Jack kills it dead at any time. 8 is miss a go. You can do runs of suits and cards so 5S, 6S, 6D, 7D, 7C, 7H is valid. Aces are wild and can be used in high or low runs.
Stepawayfromtheminirolls · 28/08/2020 16:33

There's a similar game called Barriba that I've played with some Greek friends.

EggyPegg · 28/08/2020 16:34

Sounds very similar to Rummy, but I've never played Gin Rummy (though am keen to learn)

EggyPegg · 28/08/2020 16:35

As I was typing my response, DS (7) was trouncing DH at Black Jack. I only taught him to play this week, but he's got a real mind for card games.

CallingOnAvengingAngels · 28/08/2020 16:35

I call this Spit. Learnt it at school but no one seems to know it !

Maturestudentneedshelp · 28/08/2020 16:36

Spit!

raddledoldmisanthropist · 28/08/2020 16:36

It's called Go Johnny Go Go Go Go. It's like a cross between Hoover and Eight men down.

MJMG2015 · 28/08/2020 16:38

Rummy the way you're playing it (in your hand) Gin Rummy with them laid out as you describe.

But maybe you had a family name for it, that we'll never guess!

gggrrrargh · 28/08/2020 16:39

We play it exactly like that and called it 501 - that’s how many points you can get up to until you are out

FlamedToACrisp · 28/08/2020 16:39

Well, folks, I'm afraid I owe you an apology for wasting your time Sad. I have just remembered the name we used was Consolation, and as Google tells me no one on the internet has ever heard of it, I must assume it was a family name.

The rules are pretty much the same as gin rummy, but as my parents were strict non-drinkers, possibly they changed the name so we kids didn't feel talking about booze was acceptable (if you knew them, that makes PERFECT sense... we did play rummy, though!)

Anyway, thank you all Flowers

Hope you all enjoy the 'family card games night' you are no doubt planning!

whynotwhen · 28/08/2020 16:50

Ha! We called it rummy scoop because of scooping up the cards Grin

EggyPegg · 28/08/2020 16:51

We LOVE card games. After a tense 20 year relationship with my MIL, that's what got us to bond last week.

And my 7 year old is dealing again, so I'm going to join him. I'm going to teach him poker soon.

Gatehouse77 · 28/08/2020 17:24

@Scentsandsensible

I can’t spell it but Kaluki?
We used to play this (I can't spell it either!) but I seem to remember holding many more than 7 cards and playing with 2 decks. But, we were a family of 6 so that's may be why 🤷‍♀️
laylalalalao · 28/08/2020 17:31

we call that gin rummy

00100001 · 28/08/2020 17:33

We call it "Dip Back" rummy.

ChinookPilotsGoVertical · 28/08/2020 17:33

Can anyone summarise euchre?
