The object is simply to get rid of your cards, and catch your opponents with as many points as possible. You start with 7 cards and a face-down deck of the rest in the middle. You play it like rummy, trying to get runs or 3/4 of a kind, but you put them down as you go, and other people can add to yours, for example if you put down 4,5,6 of hearts, someone else can add 7 of hearts when it's their turn, as long as they have put down a run or set already.

You pick up at the beginning and discard at the end of your go, but when you discard, you overlap the cards so you can see the discard pile. When it's your go, you can pick up any in the discard pile but you have to take all the cards on top of it as well.

I'm sure the name is a long word, but I can't remember it! Help!

Floats? Where ace then 2 then 3 etc is any card to place a set but if you're caught with the 'float' at the end it's worth 25 points?

Scentsandsensible · 28/08/2020 18:19

@Gatehouse77 you’re right! It did involve two decks! The only card games I ever play now Are rummy, blackjack, poker and something that for some reason we call shithead Confused

LilacSloth · 28/08/2020 18:38

Shithead is brilliant too, although I haven't played it in years and probably can't remember how.

WildCherryBlossom · 28/08/2020 18:39

Yes @Scentsandsensible Shithead was huge in the 90s. My friends and I used to play it endlessly. I've been trying to remember how to play it so that I can teach my game obsessed DS. (I will also need to think of something else to call it to avoid condoning swear words)

FlamedToACrisp · 28/08/2020 18:39

Our family favourites (apart from Consolation/whatever) are Knockout Whist and Nomination Whist - great game where you have to decide beforehand how many tricks you're going to win, and if you win more or less you score zero... complicated by including trumps, the number of cards changing, and extra rounds in the middle called Single Blind, Double Blind and No Trumps.

That's how we used to play Gin Rummy - called it Get Shut when I was a kid

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/08/2020 18:41

We call shit head 'poo head' Grin

Cloudhopping · 28/08/2020 18:42

Gin rummy or some call it American rummy(or is that another one?!)

EggyPegg · 28/08/2020 18:43

We also like Bullshit. But I will need to call it something else for the DC. Maybe 'Nonesense'.

I taught them to play 21s a few years ago (I grew up calling it Pontoon), which they like. DS2 also likes War (which is basically high card).

LockdownLump · 28/08/2020 18:47

Was shithead where you lied about which cards you put down to try and get rid of them as soon as possible and you had to call a player out if you thought they were lying and if they were, they had to pick up all the cards from the table?

If so, we used to play this in 6th form. We called it Cheat.

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/08/2020 18:52

@LockdownLump we always called that Bullshit.

Shithead you have 3 cards face down, 3 face up and some in your hand. You have to clear them all by playing higher cards. Some cards are special so make things happen.

But I've learnt that everyone seems to Have different names (and rules) for card games which makes it hard to play with non family members Grin

Scentsandsensible · 28/08/2020 18:54

Dh and I still play it a lot
Interesting that people have different “special cards”

Ours were
2 (can lay at any time)
10 burns the pack
9 have to play a lower card

Snoopy1612 · 28/08/2020 18:55

Sounds a bit like 2's and 8's?

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 28/08/2020 18:57

I think we use 7 not 9 to have to play lower. The dc have to remind me everytime we play Grin

We also love spoons which I first heard about on here.

DorisDances · 28/08/2020 19:02

We call this Pick Up Rummey

Bravefarts · 28/08/2020 19:03

Cheat?

That's Bullshit, which funnily enough I mentioned just above your post. Cheat is a better name for the DC.
FrizzQueen · 28/08/2020 20:09

Sounds like what I learnt as spit’ but you would only put down numbers in order, so if there was a 4 you could put down 5,6,7,6,5 etc.

Yep, we play Shithead too!

The kids called it Shi-thead 😜

Lougle · 28/08/2020 21:30

It sounds like a card-based version of Rummikub, which is played with tiles rather than cards.

yelyah22 · 28/08/2020 21:48

We called it Slam! I was excellent at it haha. We used to okay it in the sixth form common room and it basically turned into a spectator sport

yelyah22 · 28/08/2020 21:51

Wait no, Slam is different: www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2008/nov/22/rules-card-games-slam
