To ask your thoughts about teens vaping?

Okay... novice at this... delighted they are not smoking BUT???

Lots of late teens including my own DC are vaping - delightfully fruity flavours and smells ... which immediately make me suspicious : they just smell too nice!!

Do yours? And what do you think - or do?

They're still putting some form of chemicals directly into their lungs. I understand smokers turning to vaping to help give up smoking normal fags, but it seems ridiculous to start vaping because they think it's trendy. Anyway, those "delightful fruity flavours" smell disgusting and sickly imo.

CoRhona · 28/08/2020 12:50

I think it's really sad.

IMO vaping is to help smokers give up, not to give teens something to start.

Or are you saying you think they're smoking dope and this covers the smell?

Newfornow · 28/08/2020 12:54

Agree with others. The smells are more attractive to the young than encouraging smokers to quit,
It’s still chemical inhalation into the lungs. Not good imho.

Vape in your car, then try cleaning the sticky oil off the window. Then consider if you want that in your lungs.

www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/health-50377256 Too many news stories have been published like this one

TheoriginalLEM · 28/08/2020 13:03

Absolutely terrible and should be banned imo. For adults too.

Not enough research into long term effects, are there regulations on ingredients like other over the counter drugs? Thiscould be an emerging public health disaster.

I actually find it extremely unpleasant to be around someone who is vaping, it makes me gag

As for quitting smoking its like an alcoholic giving up gin in favour of red wine.

Then the covid risks? I daresay the virus can live quite nicely in an aerosol that these people are breathing out.

Absolutely stunned they were ever allowed in the first place.

When my DF was in hospital with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, the Doctor said the idiopathic part referred to ‘unknown cause’. He explained how the lungs were only meant to take in AIR and nothing else. That something had caused my father illness but we’d never know what pollutant/irritant/chemical it was during his lifetime that caused my fathers illness to be triggered. He said modern living means our lungs have to deal with pollutants etc but that if we can avoid any like smoking/vaping etc then it’s best to avoid them.

Only this morning I was reading a story about a teen who’d reacted badly to vaping and whose lungs were ruined.

I’d be devastated if my DD started vaping. The only good thing about her grandfathers illness was that she’s learned young to not take risks with her lungs.

I know vaping in many ways is better than smoking. But it’s not risk free. And due to its newness we are still yet to see what the long term effects are.

So my answer is - I’d say using it to quit smoking is probably wise if no other way helps. However taking up vaping when you don’t smoke is to me utter utter madness.

Popcorn lung

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 28/08/2020 13:06

No. They can't afford it.

The manufacturers have a lot to answer for. They're the smokers equivalent to alco pops.

loveyouradvice · 28/08/2020 13:22

They're the smokers equivalent to alco pops.

This I feared... and don't understand why they aren't better regulated and with government health warnings....

Popcornriver · 28/08/2020 13:45

From what I understand they are regulated in the UK. They're safer than cigarettes because there's no breathing in carbon monoxide. The NHS states they're 95% safer than traditional cigarettes and have the potential to save many lives. Adults should be free to use them if they wish. Obviously for those under 18 it's illegal and rightly so. I say this as a non smoker/vaper.

TheHighestSardine · 28/08/2020 13:52

It's fucking stupid but it's far less fucking stupid than smoking so I can't get too exercised.

Unless they're using nicotine vape fluid, in which is case it's only half as fucking stupid as smoking. "Yay, let's intentionally addict myself to something pointless"

Soopermum1 · 28/08/2020 14:44

I just go with it. I have more of a downer on the skunk he's smoking as well, guess I have to pick my battles
