I was griped by the James Bulger murder 25 years ago

I recently listened to an audiobook about the Golden State Killer. Absolutely fascinating story - it focussed more on the police investigation, which was driven pretty much by one man, but also showed the impact on the survivors once the killer had been caught. I can highly recommend it - I listened to it whilst walking to work, and often found myself going the long way around, so that I could listen for longer.

The Moors Murders

x2boys · 28/08/2020 13:03

No specific crimes ,but I do watch a lot of true crime on the crime and investigation channel ,Some of my current favourite,s( if you can call them that) are Evil online,Murder on CCTV , Dissappeared.The Murder of Shirley Leach has always stayed with me as it was very local 😥

Daysofpearlyspencer · 28/08/2020 13:06

April Fabb as I feel connected for reasons I gave in a similar thread. I am not totally convinced it was Black.

Also Cathy Cesnik the nun murdered in 1969. There is a Netflix documentary on it.

unicornpower · 28/08/2020 13:08

@Sparklesocks

Sally Anne Bowman - not obsessed but it has a profound effect on me. We were a similar age and it was near to where I live. She was attacked in the mere seconds between getting out of her boyfriend’s car and getting to her front door.

Because of what happened to her even now my friends and I will make sure each other have stepped over the threshold into the house and closed the door before we drive away. I think sometimes they stories really affect you deeply, especially if you’re at a young age.

Oh my gosh i remember her too! that was a horrible case :(
UnfinishedSymphon · 28/08/2020 13:10

I've not read all posts so not sure if this has been mentioned but the death of Junko Furuta, she was subjected to the most awful torture and eventual murder by a group of teenage boys. I read about this years ago but I still think about what she went through and how scared she must have been

Rafflesway · 28/08/2020 13:11

Florencex. Vile isn't it?

Also, I believe the girl was released - unbelievable -and the others' sentences have been pretty much overturned, (although they are still imprisoned thank God), pending retrials. 🤬

There is no way on God's earth those bastards are innocent!

I was thinking of that one earlier. Probably worse than the Anita Cosby case considering that it was, I believe, something like 40 days long. What was truly shameful in that case was the lenient sentences given out.

AllPlayedOut · 28/08/2020 13:18

I like child serial killers

That's not a sentence you hear every day.

Rafflesway · 28/08/2020 13:18

OMG! Yes, I had forgotten about Junko Furuta! How?

This one one of the worst crimes ever!

Snaketime · 28/08/2020 13:19

Jack the Ripper, the Krays and Sweeney Todd. There are a few others but I really can't get my tired brain to be forthcoming on them at the moment 😕😴

WitchesNStuff · 28/08/2020 13:22

The James Bulger murder for sure. I have watched every programme and read every book about it. I definitely have varied my opinions on the case/the murderers/sentencing etc over time. It is such a complex case due to the ages of the boys. Just unbelievable that it happened but the ongoing effect is has had on people is awful.

Spidey66 · 28/08/2020 13:23

I'm fascinated by stories of how people got away with horrific crimes for years. So the likes of the Wests, Dennis Nielsen and (extremely sick) Ian Watkins (from LostProphets).

MuddlingMackem · 28/08/2020 13:24

@SideEyeing

I definitely have a "weirdo" true crime obsession. God forbid DP go missing and someone check my search history!

I watch a lot of stuff on the Crime + Investigation channel, and my husband did comment that he'd better not get on the wrong side of me. I did point out that I watch them as I like to see how they were solved and for the perpetrator to be caught, so he's safe. Grin

rayoflightboy · 28/08/2020 13:27

Henry Lee Lucas and Otis Toole.

Jeffrey Dalmer.
Ted Bundy.

How they all got away with it for years is unbelieveable.

ageingdisgracefully · 28/08/2020 13:30

Jill Dando.

A national treasure-type figure shot on her doorstep in broad daylight.

Utterly baffling.

Spidey66 · 28/08/2020 13:31

@NoemiaElara

The Jonestown Massacre and The West Memphis Three/West of Memphis/Paradise Lost documentaries are fascinating!
Oh I'm fascinated by the Jonestown massacre. I was 12 at the time and it didn't really register with me, but have read a lot and seen YouTube documentaries on it since. Jim Jones was a very, very disturbed man.
TopBitchoftheWitches · 28/08/2020 13:35

@Daisy95 have you seen the news reports about the bones found in a river in Sudbury. I immediately thought of Corrie.

AdoptedBumpkin · 28/08/2020 13:36

I'm far from convinced about Black's involvement with the Genette Tate case. A friend of mine had some contact with someone who knew a lot of inside information about the case, and she was convinced it was someone closer to home.
Littlepaws18 · 28/08/2020 13:39

The Isodal Woman, there's a podcast on BBC sounds. A woman who was burnt in the Isodal valley Norway. With some items with her that suggests she could of been a spy in the Cold War. Was fantastic how they used forensics to piece together an understanding of her life.

thewhitechair · 28/08/2020 13:42

I can’t bear to read anything to do with James Bulger, even glimpsing the photos of him is really upsetting :( horrendous.

I guess the crimes that I find most ‘gripping’ are the ones that are yet to be solved.

canyoucallbacklater · 28/08/2020 13:43

James Bulger's murder.

DH works with a number of officers who were on the original case. Some of the background details are utterly traumatising.

Really makes you think, what the hell happened to those children?

thewhitechair · 28/08/2020 13:44

@MooominMamma

The Delphi murders, 2 teenage girls out for a walk and never came home 3 and a half years ago. They have video footage, photos and audio that one of the girls took on her phone and they still don't know who did it. There's a fascinating podcast about it called 'Down the Hill'.
Yes I’m also intrigued by this, also seems all the more upsetting that they never got justice when one of the girls was so quick-thinking to video the man, even at a scary moment.
