AIBU to ask people to confess they also dislike masks for shallow and superficial reasons?

Yes I am clearly a terribly shallow and superficial person Blush Come join me if you are also a shallow superficial person and make me feel better.

This is, by the way, fucking lighthearted I am wearing my masks and behaving myself so don't anyone start being pompous at me Wink

Reasons I don't like wearing my masks.

  1. I have a pretty new septum ring which has cat ears. No one can see it Also, sometimes the cat ears catch on the mask when I am taking it off and this aggravates me.
  2. I have lots and lots and lots and lots of nice lipsticks including a new Burts Bees crayon thing I bought just before lockdown and which is possibly the nicest one ever. No one can see it. Also if I wear it anyway it rubs off on the inside of the mask (this is also very aggravating).
  3. I make my own masks and I am spending a fucking fortune on nice fabric. I can't stop myself.
  4. I am getting fucking spots on my chin, I'm in my 40s and have had about three spots in the whole of my life. I can only conclude this is mask related - although I actually am horribly worried stressed about other stuff (hence my distraction attempt of this lightfuckinghearted thread) and maybe that is causing them, but I will blame said masks anyway.

Come and confess your similar thoughts. I will even tell you which lip crayon it is (seriously it's like the Holy Grail) if you cheer me up.

We’re allowed to hate masks - my DSis who is a medical professional says the ones they wear all day to work actually fit and aren’t that annoying - whereas the cloth ones we’re all wearing are sweaty and horrible - she gave me permission to be hacked off...😂

VeilsForVirtueMasksForVice · 27/08/2020 19:55

I was so tempted to go all Victorian Safe and never come back about The Lip Crayon Grin Okay, it is a Burts Bees one called Redwood Forest, looks really red when you look at it but it's not so much on, it's a MLBB on me. They also do a pinker one called Niagara something which is also good but not as ace as the Redwood.

Re eyelashes, I wear Eyelure Accents which have a No3 on the box, or the 5 which is a bit thicker. Also I like their "fluttery light" ones. I don't buy full length strip ones as I prefer the more natural cats eye type look rather than causing a draught every time I blink Grin

Shit I just realised I should have said (possible big drip feed Grin) I don't have many eyelashes/eyebrows or any other hair only lots of fucking chin hairs Hmm so I need light looking lashes so I don't look alarming to small children.

re the spots

ZoeTurtle · 27/08/2020 20:40

I get mask spots around my mouth but then I get to pop them, so it makes me want to wear masks more.

stardance · 27/08/2020 20:44

I suffered with acne for about 7 years, eventually managed to change my contraceptive pill at the start of the year which cleared my face up a treat. Now I'm getting spots again due to wearing masks 😫

Ethelfleda · 27/08/2020 20:47

My shallow reason for liking them is that I keep being asked for ID when attempting to buy wine. I’m 36 Grin

Ethelfleda · 27/08/2020 20:53

Does it look like the picture, OP? This is a nice colour. But I have thin lips and lippy always annoys me. I wish I was a real girl.

Shosha1 · 27/08/2020 20:56

See i am quite liking mine (Liberty Print DDIL made) as I have broken my dentures, two of the teeth to the right side are missing. Dentist has said will be next year before they can fit me in, as no pain and csn still eat properly. Just cosmetic really.

So my mask covers my gappy mouth.

And the only spot I have ever had!

Juniperandrage · 27/08/2020 21:04

I like mine, they make me feel badass

YoTheGinPussyOnThigh · 27/08/2020 21:06

I had a salad with spring onions for supper last night. The smell of my breath in my mask today nearly asphyxiated me. Lesson learned only eat bland shit if wearing a mask the next day.

I like being able to mutter darkly on public transport with a mask on. I said cunt the other day louder than intended. I looked around shocked like everyone else.

Sorka · 27/08/2020 21:11

When strangers are nice or polite I usually smile at them by way of thank you. It’s just a polite smile not one that reaches my eyes. So now when people make way for me in the supermarket aisle I stare at them with my auto-pilot dull shopping trip eyes and they think I’m very strange. I forget that they can’t see my polite smile until after I have got passed them and the moment is gone.

Namechanger87851 · 27/08/2020 21:14

Oh absolutley ! I have to wear it at work . It’s been Fairly hot And I’d assume the sweating plus makeup and mask has caused what is now several Small volcanic like acne eruptions all along my jaw . It’s been a while Since Iv had spots so feeling quite youthful tbh 😂

Sorka · 27/08/2020 21:15

@powershowerforanhour

Every time I pull a stethoscope off one handed (whilst holding a cat in the other hand- owner in the carpark) it catches in the bloody ear loop.

On the plus side, I'm raising a silent cheer for all the women who are enjoying not being told "Cheer up love it might never happen" "Gis a smile love" etc. Silver linings...

This is an excellent point. No random men have instructed me to smile then got cross when I failed to rearrange my face on command for months.
ilikebooksandplants · 27/08/2020 21:16

I look stupid in mine. All the hate for them here.

LioneIRichTea · 27/08/2020 21:17

I look like blinking Bucky from Captain America in mine, either that or someone from GTA who is about to rob the place Grin

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 27/08/2020 21:24

I have found the holy grail of masks though on etsy. They are pretty, comfy and wash really well. I hate wearing them but this particular seller seems to be pretty good - stumbled on them by accident but I have a Buzz Lightyear one, a pretty blue cloud one, and a polka dot one Grin

ScrapThatThen · 27/08/2020 21:30

I got distracted from your thread earlier by the revelation that Burt's Bees do lipsticks. I mean the crayons do look nice but the coloured lip balms and the lip shimmers look right up my street.

I did my makeup in anticipation of my new haircut. Then realised that was fairly pointless with a mask.

Settleandcalm · 27/08/2020 21:33

I have “fuck me” eyes apparently, and the mask covers the rest of my “actually fuck off” face that comes more naturally Smile

AmyandPhilipfan · 27/08/2020 21:55

They make me feel sick. I had to take mine off in Home Bargains a few days ago because it was either that or throw up! I really feel for people who have to wear them all day.

HeyLala · 27/08/2020 22:11

Does anyone have trouble walking down stairs and escalators in them, or is it just me?

Namechanger87851 · 27/08/2020 22:15

@Settleandcalm this is Also me Grin

VeilsForVirtueMasksForVice · 29/08/2020 16:50

Deary me I forgot I had started this thread! Blush

Yes @Ethelfleda but it doesn't look as red as that in RL, it's more natural. I love BB tinted lip balms too, I LOVE Elizabeth Arden coloured balms but they are more expensive sadly. Amazing staying power though.

Well I have been experimenting with different material masks (see I took one for the team and bought a shit load more fabric just for your sakes, I'm just so selfless, you're all welcome Wink) and my silk lined ones definitely don't irritate my skin so much. (I cut up a silk pillowcase as the price of fabric is getting fucking ridiculous now Hmm)

For those of us afflicted with MaskSpots can I recommend something from previous MN threads about teenage skin - it's the Neutrogena Clear and Defend Facial Wash (orange coloured bottle, only a couple of pounds) as it's fucking fantastic. I usually use Cerave (another MN recommendation!) but stole DS's face wash and it really is good. Still got a fucking huge one on my jawline though Hmm

Also I swapped my septum ring for a horseshoe with little balls on the end and it doesn't catch as much. But it isn't as pretty
