To think a hot tub in the kitchen isn't a great idea?

My work involves looking at plans for new builds/ extensions/ renovations. I've just been sent a set that includes a hot tub in a kitchen-diner.

The property's owners plan to build a 4m x 4m glass-walled extension onto the existing kitchen/diner and knock through, giving the kitchen a view of the garden. I imagine most people would put a dining table in the extension but the owners of this property are sinking a hot tub into the floor. The tub is shown around 1200mm (4ft) away from a run of kitchen units. To prevent anyone falling in while working in the kitchen there will be a glass screen positioned to prevent accidents. Otherwise it's open to the kitchen.

It's my job to think through the ventilation, humidity and heating issues, which can all be managed. So practicality aside, AIBU to think it's not a good idea — or would you love a hot tub in your kitchen?

Imagine trying to sell that!

I’ve been watching Selling Sunset and even those amazing LA houses have the hot tub outside.

Just can’t fathom why you would.

AryaStarkWolf · 27/08/2020 15:35

It's off the kitchen rather than in it by your description? Which isn't as bad as in the kitchen but yeah wouldn't fancy it, unless it was only a couple living there I guess

Cbatothinkofausername · 27/08/2020 15:37

It kinda makes sense if you have parties in your kitchen. Or if you want to watch the kids while you cook.

SapphosRock · 27/08/2020 15:38

I think we need a diagram...

draughtycatflap · 27/08/2020 15:39

Isn’t there a danger of dropping the onion rings and them rolling into the hot tub?

TenthOfDecember · 27/08/2020 15:40

Might be useful as a massive punch bowl. Porridge pot/soup pan?

SockYarn · 27/08/2020 15:41

It's weird. Hot tubs belong outside.

WhatWouldPennyDo · 27/08/2020 15:41

No way would I want that in my own house Confused but each to their own.

Fizzingsherbert · 27/08/2020 15:41

Diagram please Grin

The80sweregreat · 27/08/2020 15:44

It's a shame they can't build a room outside for it as I think being in the kitchen would put people off buying it if they wanted to sell it on in the future. Plus it would be a hazard if anyone visited with little children not to mention the condensation issues and the noise they make.

Plus who wants to sit in their swimming costume watching someone cook their dinner? I couldn't think of anything worse. It's meant to be a relaxing thing!

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/08/2020 15:45

Sounds like the sort of idea my DH would have.

Parents started their married life in a flat with the bath in the fairly spacious kitchen - think minimal kitchenette in one corner of a big room and bath on the the side of the room, with table and chairs and a couple of armchairs in between. Apparently they found it quite convenient as they could chat about their day as one cooked and the other bathed, and then the cook bathed while the other one washed up.
Share in a toilet with another flat was less fun.

giantangryrooster · 27/08/2020 15:45

Guess the costumers are a swinger club 🤷‍♀️.

But tacky as hell Grin.

Shedbuilder · 27/08/2020 15:47

Sorry, can't post the plans in case anyone recognises the project.

We have a 'glass box' extension tagged onto the side of our kitchen. It's kind of like a conservatory but not iyswim. We have a big comfy sofa in there and I love sitting in there - it's just like being in the garden with non of the downsides. We often say we should put a hot tub in there.
I guess it depends on the layout of the kitchen and the outlook to outside.

Suzi888 · 27/08/2020 15:48

Doesn’t seem a very good idea, sounds very odd. I wouldn’t want it.

ShakerCan · 27/08/2020 15:48

Ugh no it’s just somehow a bit grim and would put me right off. Reminded me of this gem I saw currently up for sale. Bath AND toilet open to the bedroom. Classy.

To think a hot tub in the kitchen isn't a great idea?
amusedbush · 27/08/2020 15:48

Who wouldn’t want to sit in a hot tub while heating up their spaghetti hoops? Sounds practical and not at all like it would be full of crumbs after a week.

bridgetreilly · 27/08/2020 15:49

I love the idea of a hot tub in a sort of conservatory space with bifold doors that opened to the outside. I would not, however, want it to feel as if it was in the same room as my kitchen. And I would think there are real questions to be asked about humidity and ventilation for any indoor hot-tub. Great in spas, less good in most private homes, I should think.

@TenthOfDecember

Might be useful as a massive punch bowl. Porridge pot/soup pan?
Oh my god 🤣🤣🤣🤣
friskybivalves · 27/08/2020 15:49

Ewwww foetid sex ponds are bad enough outside - but right next to where you cook?

MitziK · 27/08/2020 15:50

@draughtycatflap

Isn’t there a danger of dropping the onion rings and them rolling into the hot tub?
Hell (or a hot tub) would freeze over before anything came between me and my onion rings.
nocoolnamesleft · 27/08/2020 15:50

Yeah, cos so many people are sticking hot tubs in kitchens these days, so your original post was in no way identifying.

bridgetreilly · 27/08/2020 15:50

It could have a lid, though? Both for the prevention of accidents and crumb-contamination, as well as reducing humidity issues.

OhioOhioOhio · 27/08/2020 15:50

I can imagine that it would have potential to sometimes be fantastic and lots of times be absolutely shit.
