To think a hot tub in the kitchen isn't a great idea?

My work involves looking at plans for new builds/ extensions/ renovations. I've just been sent a set that includes a hot tub in a kitchen-diner.

The property's owners plan to build a 4m x 4m glass-walled extension onto the existing kitchen/diner and knock through, giving the kitchen a view of the garden. I imagine most people would put a dining table in the extension but the owners of this property are sinking a hot tub into the floor. The tub is shown around 1200mm (4ft) away from a run of kitchen units. To prevent anyone falling in while working in the kitchen there will be a glass screen positioned to prevent accidents. Otherwise it's open to the kitchen.

It's my job to think through the ventilation, humidity and heating issues, which can all be managed. So practicality aside, AIBU to think it's not a good idea — or would you love a hot tub in your kitchen?

My friend bought a house where this was done. Apparantly the owner was a yoga teacher or something and did her classes there. It was in the living room. Clearly they ripped it out, but obvs lots of swinger jokes were made.🤣

Like if you just pop round for a cup of tea and it's a dreary Tuesday afternoon in March. 'I don't want to go in the hot tub, Brenda, can we not just sit at the table please?'

Meckity1 · 27/08/2020 15:54

Was it wrong that my immediate thought was - sort of washing machine?

DogInATent · 27/08/2020 15:59

@Shedbuilder

Sorry, can't post the plans in case anyone recognises the project.
I'm pretty sure your description of a kitchen sex pond is unique enough that if anyone is going to recognise it they won't need the diagram to do so.

Boil in the bag rice, anyone?

bridgetreilly: And I would think there are real questions to be asked about humidity and ventilation for any indoor hot-tub.

Ventilation and heat recovery systems can do the job, but they'll be expensive if, as the clients have requested, they want to be able to use the tub in the winter without opening the doors to the garden (which will leave the kitchen freezing) and without steaming up the glass. I have a feeling this particular fantasy will be dropped once the numbers come in.

I can see that sitting in a hot tub and admiring the view (they've got a good view) would be lovely. I just think the experience would be marred by climbing out and having to walk through the kitchen in a towel.

I love the ' escape to the chateau' programme on channel 4 , but one of the bedrooms they use for B and B guests has a bath on feet right at the bottom of the bed! People have said it looks ' romantic' but it probably is for 20 something year olds, thin glamorous and pert! Not when your a saggy fifty plus like I am..
Any shower bath or loo must be behind a lockable door away from everyone in my book. Same goes for any hot tub set ups.

vanillandhoney · 27/08/2020 16:11

This is pretty identifying anyway! How many people are installing hot tubs in their kitchens?

notanothertakeaway · 27/08/2020 16:11

Sounds like a bonkers idea

I think YABU and unprofessional for criticising your clients on a public forum. This is quite identifying

The80sweregreat · 27/08/2020 16:12

Sex pond!!😀

HerNameWasEliza · 27/08/2020 16:13

I'm thinking the owners are up to some kinky shit! Each to their own but they need to be careful about safety.

HerNameWasEliza · 27/08/2020 16:14

PS, it will devalue the house of course unless they have it taken out before they sell. But they may not be thinking about future value and more instead about current fun.

OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots · 27/08/2020 16:16

It must surely be illegal in relation to the electricity/water problems. After all, you can't have a washing machine or any sockets in a bathroom, so surely you couldn't have a bath (or a hot tub) in a kitchen?

2bazookas · 27/08/2020 16:18

Years ago we had a twintub in the kitchen.....

MatildaTheCat · 27/08/2020 16:18

They are 100% sex people.

SeaToSki · 27/08/2020 16:23

What will happen when they have to shock the water with chlorine, the whole house is going to stink of chlorine gas and if they get it wrong and put too much chlorine in, they might poison themselves. There is a reason most hot tubs are outside and indoor pools have high ceilings.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 27/08/2020 16:25

“Lynne, these are sex people”

GoatsInBoats · 27/08/2020 16:26

Could it double as a really massive sous vide?

SarahBellam · 27/08/2020 16:27

I think that’s a fantastic idea - a sex pond that’s close to the snacks and booze. What’s not to like 😂

SophocIestheFox · 27/08/2020 16:28

🤣🤣

I cant imagine why damp, naked/partially clothed people watching you defrost the fridge and load the dishwasher while they bubble away in the tub is in any way an enticing prospect. Plus, the damp is going to wreak havoc on the quinoa Grin

tiredanddangerous · 27/08/2020 16:28

Sunk into the floor? That'll be an expensive mistake to rectify!

Lifeisabeach09 · 27/08/2020 16:29

Who wouldn’t want to sit in a hot tub while heating up their spaghetti hoops? Sounds practical and not at all like it would be full of crumbs after a week.

^^Haha. Yep. There's a certain practicality to it.

Zaphodsotherhead · 27/08/2020 16:29

Isn't a hot tub indoors just 'a bath'?

FlumpetCrumpet · 27/08/2020 16:29

Brilliant! Can you imagine how embarrassed your kids would be bringing a mate home and finding mum and dad with their bits out in the corner of the kitchen. I think it's worth it for that alone and my child is only 2 at present Grin

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 27/08/2020 16:33

When I was a child my aunt and her family lived in a house that didn't have a bathroom. We visited once and they were taking turns in a tin bath in the kitchen; I was fascinated.
Same sort of vibe?
