To think a hot tub in the kitchen isn't a great idea?

My work involves looking at plans for new builds/ extensions/ renovations. I've just been sent a set that includes a hot tub in a kitchen-diner.

The property's owners plan to build a 4m x 4m glass-walled extension onto the existing kitchen/diner and knock through, giving the kitchen a view of the garden. I imagine most people would put a dining table in the extension but the owners of this property are sinking a hot tub into the floor. The tub is shown around 1200mm (4ft) away from a run of kitchen units. To prevent anyone falling in while working in the kitchen there will be a glass screen positioned to prevent accidents. Otherwise it's open to the kitchen.

It's my job to think through the ventilation, humidity and heating issues, which can all be managed. So practicality aside, AIBU to think it's not a good idea — or would you love a hot tub in your kitchen?

@OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots

It must surely be illegal in relation to the electricity/water problems. After all, you can't have a washing machine or any sockets in a bathroom, so surely you couldn't have a bath (or a hot tub) in a kitchen?
Sorry @OrangeGeckoWithBlackSpots but this simply isn’t true - we have both a washing machine and a tumbler dryer in our downstairs shower-room - I guess there are regulations for distance from water source (it is a large room) but they have normal plugs/sockets

I suppose it could double up as a sous vide.....

Funguy · 27/08/2020 20:29

Good if you are needing to make really large soup.

Oh my this is amazing in the 'amazingly shit' kind of way.

I remember there were a couple on a George Clarkson (or similar) programme a couple of years ago who had a swimming pool and bar in their living room and wanted to remove it. They'd put it in during the 80s as that was the fashion (in some kind of Del Boy Costa De Cheapo moment of lunacy).

It was hilarious. And this sounds like the modern day version. All you need is accompanying hipster bar in the shed outside and the look would be complete and up to date.

And a screenshot with the full horror of whats behind the curtains.

Please forgive me but I thought that it sounds like a set for a porn movie. 🤮

Just to be clear salt pools or hot tubs are actually chlorine ones. You just put the chlorine in as a granulated salt rather than as liquid and the mechanism converts it into chlorine.

The chemical symbol for table salt is NaCl The Cl bit is chlorine

So it will smell chlorin-y just not as bad as if they add liquid chlorine or bromine. Its a bit easier to manage day to day.

and if it gets out of whack (someone gets in covered in body lotion or a swimsuit that is got detergent still in it or they just use it more than usual one week) then they will have to shock it = dumping a large amount of chlorine in it to get it back under control and that is smelly/gassy

@ZaraCarmichaelshighheels

Gosh, that's really something. Lying in the bathtub chatting to your Nan as she makes dinner!

Love the Phil and Kirsty one. Just amazing!

Am off to Google hot tubs in kitchens.

Love the link to the guy with a bath concealed under seating! There's something about water and baths and swimming that seems to send people crazy.

I once tendered for work on a monster six-bed bungalow, with all the rooms having glass walls and doors that opened onto a central large, roofed-over swimming pool. Everyone told the owner of the pitfalls — the smell, the damp, the mould but he said it was his life's dream to have a home where everyone could get out of bed and walk straight out to the pool for a morning swim.

A few years later the house came up for sale and didn't sell. You could smell the chlorine and feel the soggy carpets just from the photos.

No more chilly runs to and from the fridge. Genius.

Humm1ngb1rd · 27/08/2020 22:34

Sorry not had chance to read the whole thread, but made me think of this episode of love it or list it. Seem to remember house value increased drastically once swimming pool removed from living roomGrin

At least it will mean the neighbours don’t have to put up with the noise it makes.

altiara · 28/08/2020 01:10

Just remembering that episode of Gavin and Stacey where someone was trying to defrost the frozen turkey in the bath - this would be perfect!!

Bluesheep8 · 28/08/2020 07:11

Might be useful as a massive punch bowl. Porridge pot/soup pan?
