Is it wanky to put my photo on my cv?

I needed to quickly do a cv for a job interview that i have already secured.

So to prompt myself to include everything in some sort if order i used a template from word. I normally just do a plain document. Anyway the document came together well and there was space for a photo. I take a terrible picture so its definately not vanity, but the picture shows me at work looking happy and its very relevant to the post.

Two questions.

  1. Are they going to think im lazy using the template (i was a bit) and will i stand out for the wrong reasons?
  1. I now have my cv written out so could effectively ping it out to jobs im half interested in. Do i leave the pic/template or do i go back to sober cv?

Yabu - wanker
Yanbu - will stand out positively

Interesting stuff around bias

Violin blind auditions

Companies removing identifying info

I'm surprised so many UK HR and recruitment people on the thread haven't heard about this sort of thing, it's been in the news for years.

I find it interesting everyone is saying no to a photo when every external interview I've been to in last 5 years have requested I attach a photo.

As a potential employer I would prefer a photo.

I'm an employer who doesn't require a photo - I much prefer a well written CV; they words they use to describe themselves and their careers. I've also been in the employment industry for a couple of decades and none of the thousands of clients I've had have requested a photo; apart from one who was employing a brand ambassador /TV presenter and then we were looking at show reels to determine candidate's delivery style and on screen presence!

I'd be interested in knowing what potential employers are looking for when they request and look at candidate's photo's.

sjon how can you tell someone's character from a photo?

To be honest you can't tell someone's character from a CV either and you can't always tell someone's character from an interview.

I don't understand why piddle on your top and unkempt hair is going to demonstrate how good you are at your job?
Even if you work in a zoo, there's no reason to include a photo of you looking like a scarecrow.

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2020 15:21

I've not seen a CV with a photo on for years. Over a decade maybe.

Maybe it's industry specific.

NiceGerbil · 29/08/2020 15:22

Maybe even 20 years.

Template - fine, but no to the photo.
Although commonplace to use a photo elsewhere in Europe, it really isn't the done thing here in the UK.

DidoAeneas · 29/08/2020 22:59

When I’m looking through CVs I don’t care if they have a photo or not but because of UK standard not to use a photo I can’t present the candidate to my team and retain my own credibility. I’m always rushed off my feet so anything left field gets binned. It’s hypocritical of course, since everyone goes on LinkedIn anyway to see what the shortlist pile look like. Plus a lot of the things you’re not supposed to say on a CV are obvious on meeting the candidate anyway and as a candidate I’ve been asked outrageous questions over the years..though things have improved.
In my first ft role after mat. leave I hid the baby seat in the boot of the car and took my wedding ring off before I got anywhere with a new role (got ghosted when either were mentioned/obvious). So glad that phase of my life is over! Good luck with job search!

Not unless you are applying to be cabin crew in the Middle East.

I recruited recently and a male applicant had put an A4 size photo of himself on one side of his very poor, less than one sheet of A4 CV. It looked like a selfie and the recruitment was for quite a specialist team in the criminal justice sector....

I did an equality training course many years ago where they said if you got all the applications/cvs that had the right experience/qualifications and threw them up in the air and just caught one you would have as much chance of picking the right candidate as shortlisting and interviewing. I wish I'd asked if they had actually done that.

blibbka · 03/09/2020 09:33

Interesting. My CV has a photo on it, and has done for the past 6 years or so. The CV has done me fine and despite having worked with numerous recruiters never had any comments on it.

It's never crossed my mind that it might be an issue. Perhaps this is something to do with being male, and/or my industry (IT, contract work).

My rationale for including a photo is simply to demonstrate that I'm able to dress in a reasonable presentable and professional manner for a role that is client-facing at times.

Maybe I should remove it.

blibbka · 03/09/2020 09:35

I hasten to add, the photo is roughly postage-stamp sized, very much an aside.

Another reason for including it I suppose is that my industry is quite design oriented and it was possible to lay out the CV in a more creative and better looking fashion by including it.

blibbka · 03/09/2020 09:38

@Saltyauntiepoop

When you add a photo it gives the impression that you think you can gain an additional extra over other candidates because of your looks. The cultures where a photo with the cv is a common practice aren't exactly holding the torch light for equality, fairness and model employer behaviour 🙄
Curious, I wonder how much this is industry and/or gender specific. I'd be astounded if anyone thought that I, a middle-aged IT worker, was trying to gain an unfair advantage through my good looks.
blibbka · 03/09/2020 09:44

@dwiz8

Dear god do not put a photo on your CV

For many organisations they won't allow it or reject those with photos as they try to have blind recruitment

It's super wanky

I assume that the organisation would have to state their CV requirements on the job advert wouldn't they?
