Is it wanky to put my photo on my cv?

I needed to quickly do a cv for a job interview that i have already secured.

So to prompt myself to include everything in some sort if order i used a template from word. I normally just do a plain document. Anyway the document came together well and there was space for a photo. I take a terrible picture so its definately not vanity, but the picture shows me at work looking happy and its very relevant to the post.

Two questions.

  1. Are they going to think im lazy using the template (i was a bit) and will i stand out for the wrong reasons?
  1. I now have my cv written out so could effectively ping it out to jobs im half interested in. Do i leave the pic/template or do i go back to sober cv?

Yabu - wanker
Yanbu - will stand out positively

Definitely not, a few years ago I received a CV with a glamour shot type photo - completely put me off.

Partayyyyy · 28/08/2020 18:21

Do what you think is best bit either way it's not lazy or wanky going for a job good luck Smile

Rachel1874 · 28/08/2020 18:23

I have looked at so many CVs. Please do not add a photo.

Saltyauntiepoop · 28/08/2020 18:28

When you add a photo it gives the impression that you think you can gain an additional extra over other candidates because of your looks. The cultures where a photo with the cv is a common practice aren't exactly holding the torch light for equality, fairness and model employer behaviour 🙄

About 15 years ago, I applied for a marketing job. I was 55, and I thought I would be too old or at least older than everyone else. I added a professionally-taken thumbnail pic. The guy interviewing me, who later became my boss, said the pic had swung it because it gave him an idea of who I was, and I looked pleasant. What he really meant was that I didn't look like someone's granny: I was wearing a suit jacket and white shirt, and my hair looked ok. I worked really hard on that CV, though. Proofread it to death, summarised achievements and ambitions as briefly as possible, paid huge attention to format, layout, and syntax. It looked good - and a couple of HR people actually said so. Took me while to find the right job, but I stayed there happily for several years until I retired. It was a young office, too. I was their resident Photoshop guru.

A big no. Very wanky.

You could look at templates to spruce up your CV though, splash of colour or change to the format to make it stand out more. Lots of ideas if you type something like creative CV template into Google.

Good luck with your job search x

darkwader · 28/08/2020 18:39

I wouldn't put a photo on a CV, but if one was present, it really wouldn't concern me.

Be prepared though - we will look for your social media accounts anyway!

Notyouraveragecliche · 28/08/2020 18:41

Don't use a photo. Good luck! Xx

Diva66 · 28/08/2020 18:59

So you sent a photo where you look scruffy and dirty!

TheoriginalLEM · 28/08/2020 19:26

Did i say i looked scruffy and dirty?? I dont believe i did, i said there was wee on my top and my hair was a bit skew whiff. If it helps it was fresh wee from the critter i was holding.

I can live with office geek or mrs wanky Grin

in all the jobs in the NHS and I guess lots of other organisations, the applications are anonomised so that they can't be sexist, racist etc. so they definitely wouldn't have photos and there wouldn't be any point in putting them on. Having said that it is not difficult to read between the lines and work out who the person is by some of the things they have written anyway so anonymous applications aren't always that anonymous.
If you were going for a job as an actor or model, well that's a different story and you would need photos but for a regular job- not.

Lena18 · 28/08/2020 20:00

I am a recruiter and cvs with photos makes me cringe. 9 times of 10 they are selfies... Template is fine.

EmpressoftheMundane · 28/08/2020 20:09

I’m really surprised that anyone puts a photo these days with HR departments worried about unconscious bias etc. It gives them an extra hurdle.

safariboot · 28/08/2020 20:47

I voted YABU, but it's not wanky - rather it's a case of don't give the company information to discriminate with. Your photo is going to show your age, race, and sex, all of which employers are legally required to ignore. Of course if it gets to interview they'll see you then, but they don't need a photo any sooner.

Attitudes in other countries differ, but for a UK job, no photo. Unless it's something like modelling or acting where it actually matters.

Duemarch2021 · 28/08/2020 20:58

Im going to assume it is to work in a nursery or in a zoo Grinor something as the like

hastingsmua1 · 28/08/2020 21:00

If you want prospective employers to see what you look like, make your profile picture public on all your socials & LinkedIn - if they want to see you, they’d search you. You don’t need to add a photo to your CV, I have recruited in the past as it does make you think “wtf” when you come across one.

hastingsmua1 · 28/08/2020 21:00

And it does*

hastingsmua1 · 28/08/2020 21:01

Also don’t use the template as an excuse. It takes seconds to remove the photo field.

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2020 21:50

Lamahaha you say you understand all about unconscious bias and are ok with it resulting in unfair hiring practices.

Well ok at least you're honest!

sjonlegs · 28/08/2020 22:01

Bloody go for it! I say pucker up and sell yourself!

As a former HR manager it's great to picture the person and their character. Hugely helpful and informative.

Go for it!

Babyshambler · 28/08/2020 22:14

I used to be an Employment Adviser, and I would advise not to put a photo on a CV. Employers can be pretty judgemental, and may not even go on to read your CV if you attach a photo.
If they want to know what you look like, they will search you up on Social Media.

FarTooSkinny · 28/08/2020 22:29

Definitely attach a photo. Preferably one of you slightly squiffy and sunburnt with a prosecco in one hand.

Also print on pink paper in purple ink, using comic sans serif. And spray perfume on it before putting in the envelope with some glitter

riceuten · 28/08/2020 22:36

@Lamahaha

In Germany, where a photo is expected, it's been generally used to weed out people of colour who might coincidentally have a German name, and unattractive ior odd looking people.

How do you know this?

Because my dad and partner are German and I am German as well ?
JanewaysBun · 28/08/2020 22:53

There's a chapter in (I think) Freakanomics where they discovered that although interviewers were likely to discriminate against a CV of a person with a BAME name, they were much less likely to do so once they came to the interview stage. Racial bias i suppose might make "x' name sound like a ruffian/troublemaker but once they are explaining how they advised on a billion dollar merger that fades away.

However celebrity look a like or princess at Disney work definitely do!

NiceGerbil · 28/08/2020 23:20

sjon how can you tell someone's character from a photo?
