I wasn't allowed in the shop

Should I complain about this or just let it go?

I wanted to go into a shop today with my ds who is 3. The shop is within a shopping center which has a lift and escalators. The escalator leads directly into the shop but before Covid you could also use the lift to enter from the first floor.

I cannot use an escalator as they make me go dizzy and I would need to carry ds. It just wouldn't have been safe for me so we took the lift.

When we got to the top the lady at the door said this is exit only. I needed to go in from the escalator at the bottom. I said I couldn't use the escalator for health reasons. She then went on to ask me what health reasons. I then had to explain to her and she said she will check with her manager if I can go in Hmm it was a big exit and no one was even coming out at the time.
She radioed over to them and said I have a lady and child here who don't want to use the escalator can they come in through the exit?
I didn't hear the reply but she then gestured for me to enter.

It made me annoyed probably more than it should have. Would you complain or just leave it at that as after all I did get to go in the shop?

But you were allowed in the shop?

heymacaroner · 26/08/2020 17:31

Blimey.
No you shouldn't complain. Seems clear to me you've said you won't now OP.
But god it really wasn't a question that warranted pages of snidey messages to OP.
Thread complete surely?

ILikeGlitter · 26/08/2020 17:32

Has anyone suggested logging it with 101 yet? Hmm

C8H10N4O2 · 26/08/2020 17:35

They believed you and they let you in. Stop causing problems where there aren't any

No they asked for personal information which they should not have requested and would not be qualified to use. OP stated she couldn't use escalators, that should be enough.

You should work on your issue with escalators

What issue is that then? I can think of several conditions which cause people problems on moving stairs/walkways, none of which have a cure currently so there may be Nobel prize awaiting you.

Pobblebonk · 26/08/2020 17:43

I agree with you, OP. I would suggest a friendly letter to the manager suggesting a bit more staff training. There is absolutely no requirement in the guidance, let alone the law, that you explain precisely what your health difficulties are to individual staff members. On the other hand, there is a clear legal requirement on shops to make reasonable adjustments for disability. If they didn't take people like you into account in setting up their one way system, then they should have, and should have a notice up explaining the rule and the exceptions.

Pobblebonk · 26/08/2020 17:45

One way systems in shops are standard at the moment. If you want/need to go a different way for any reason including health reasons, you have to ask. You asked, the person checked, they let you

What this artistically omits is that they didn't just ask, they demanded personal information which they are not entitled to have.

A shop can ask you to hop on one foot while entering if they like

The OP wanted to enter a shop, who can refuse service if they choose to

They have a clear one way system and have every right to ask why the OP feels she should get to go around the one way system in place

Cohenlover · 26/08/2020 17:49

bridgetreilly If you go a little bit further down the thread, you will see the answer to your question "What on earth do you think the problem is?"

"When someone is laughing about my condition that could actually be fatal I will call them out on it.

Is it really funny that I could fall if I went on an escalator and injure or kill myself and my child?
And yes it is that serious! "

The OP told the shop assistant that she had a health condition which meant she was unable to use escalators. It's strange that so many of you are quite rightly defending the rights of those unable to use masks due to health conditions, but the OP gets humiliated by so many posters because her health condition renders her unable to use an escalator.

No one in the shop was laughing. My comment was in response to the OP, not later posts about responses on MN.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/08/2020 17:52

You were allowed in, you were just understandably asked why you can't use correct entrance. Simple.

Take your #bekind and use it yourself by being kind and not making complaints about staff where there are none.

This is why everyone rolls eyes at "be kind". It's trotted out by people who themselves refuse to use it.

Thisismytimetoshine · 26/08/2020 17:53

Your op states that you feel dizzy on escalators, op. What condition is this that is potentially fatal?

C8H10N4O2 · 26/08/2020 17:56

A shop can ask you to hop on one foot while entering if they like

They can. And they can be prosecuted for disability discrimination. Sadly the latter doesn't happen often enough.

Cissyandflora · 26/08/2020 17:58

Life is too short. It really truly is. I’ve just had an accident. I’m alive. Could have been worse but please think about just being happy that you’re ok. Be kind to the woman doing her job and trying to keep people safe as per her instructions.

Cohenlover · 26/08/2020 17:59

SchrodingersImmigrant And would you say that to a person unable to wear a mask who had received the same treatment i.e been asked the nature of their health condition and then had the request for entry relayed over the radio system? Probably not. The OP has already said she is not going to complain, so why pile on her even further?

Tootletum · 26/08/2020 18:01

Whole world is basically jobsworths set free.

PablosHoney · 26/08/2020 18:02

"probably not". wrong asssumption. Yes, I would. The staff asks. There is no reason not to. There are way too many people taking a piss so I honestly don't blame the staff. If anything I feel for the staff.
Tootletum · 26/08/2020 18:03

@Thisismytimetoshine probably one of the various and surprisingly common balance disorders. No need for the sarcy tone either, they are real and falling backwards on an escalator with a child could lead to pretty significant injury. Look up labyrinthitis, vertigo and menieres disease.

Branleuse · 26/08/2020 18:07

you were allowed in the shop through the exit. Dont worry about it

rosesandcashmere · 26/08/2020 18:07

But you were allowed into the shop
