I wasn't allowed in the shop

Should I complain about this or just let it go?

I wanted to go into a shop today with my ds who is 3. The shop is within a shopping center which has a lift and escalators. The escalator leads directly into the shop but before Covid you could also use the lift to enter from the first floor.

I cannot use an escalator as they make me go dizzy and I would need to carry ds. It just wouldn't have been safe for me so we took the lift.

When we got to the top the lady at the door said this is exit only. I needed to go in from the escalator at the bottom. I said I couldn't use the escalator for health reasons. She then went on to ask me what health reasons. I then had to explain to her and she said she will check with her manager if I can go in Hmm it was a big exit and no one was even coming out at the time.
She radioed over to them and said I have a lady and child here who don't want to use the escalator can they come in through the exit?
I didn't hear the reply but she then gestured for me to enter.

It made me annoyed probably more than it should have. Would you complain or just leave it at that as after all I did get to go in the shop?

For those of you questioning why you might carry a 3 year old, my little girl is quite scared of them and will suddenly stand still at the bottom before getting on and cause a pile up behind us Grin people would then complain that I didn’t just pick her up. Escalators are busy and it’s not really the place to stand and coax a nervous 3 year old into a moving platform that they may or may not have encountered before. Give her a break.

Kasparovski · 26/08/2020 16:50

The fact is OP, the shop probably gets a load of chancers everyday trying to enter via the exit...because it’s quicker, easier, they need the loo, just need to talk to their friend, dog ate their homework etc etc etc. You can’t possibly expect the security staff during the course of a busy day to ‘just believe’ your need to enter that way over anybody else’s.....you seem insulted that they had to ask the question which is ridiculous! Grow up! There’s a pandemic going on and new systems to manage crowd control need to be enforced.

gingerbeerandlemonade · 26/08/2020 16:50

You were allowed in. Why bother giving it any more thought?

MissClarke86 · 26/08/2020 16:51

And for what it’s worth, no I wouldn’t complain - but I can see why it might have been a little bit annoying and embarrassing waiting for her to check with her manager etc, especially if it was not busy. She does sound a bit annoying. Of course a lot boils down to tone, manner etc and we weren’t there to witness the way you both interacted with each other.

People on here are so desperate to jump on somebody though, and that’s very sad.

rwalker · 26/08/2020 16:53

There trying to keep everyone safe the world isn't about you don't be so entitled .
They challenged you explained they let you in wheres the drama.

Very true.

I was kind to the lady manning the door. I can now see complaining wouldn't be the right thing to do as she was only doing her job.

I don't think they should have asked you to explain your health condition.

AIBU has its reputation but the vitriol here is above and beyond.

I take it you haven't seen the thread Neighbour to 7 year old “We don’t like you either” The vitriol on that far surpasses even this one.

eatsleepread · 26/08/2020 16:59

You can't be for real!

ILikeGlitter · 26/08/2020 17:07

I can see someone called @VainAbigail is making a joke about this on another thread. You really don't realize how damaging you can be do you?

bridgetreilly · 26/08/2020 17:09

Cannot imagine what you think you have to complain about. You wanted to break the one-way system Covid rules; you were allowed to. Shop assistant monitoring the system was doing her job. The right decision was made.

What on earth do you think the problem is?

lovelemoncurd · 26/08/2020 17:10

And I can't get onto Mumsnet. Oh wait a minute I'm here! 😂

Are you actually serious?

You're the one being unreasonable.

Stop trying to look for other people's faults to justify your bizarre behaviour

TSSDNCOP · 26/08/2020 17:16

🦙of great drama

ILikeGlitter · 26/08/2020 17:16

@ScarMatty I've said I'm not going to make a complaint about it.
When someone is laughing about my condition that could actually be fatal I will call them out on it.

Is it really funny that I could fall if I went on an escalator and injure or kill myself and my child?
And yes it is that serious!

Sorry OP but I can't respond as I've been sidetracked as I never knew there was a 🦙 emoji.

This has made my day

@TSSDNCOP. Thanks!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/08/2020 17:20

@ILikeGlitter - your title is wrong - false advertising, or click bait, if you will - because it states unequivocally that you were NOT allowed in the store, full stop.

A more honest title might have got different answers - for example:

AIBU to dislike discussing my medical issues in public, so I can use the lift (the one way system exit) to enter the store?

Not as snappy - but more accurate - and less of an attempt to stir up MN anger on your own behalf.

A complete non-event. They checked and then let you in. No drama. Everyone's fine.

CurtainWitcher · 26/08/2020 17:25

How do people like you cope with everyday life?!

Why on earth would you need to carry a three year old on an escalator?

The woman was doing her job correctly and you WERE allowed into the shop.

What a non-issue.

BadTattoosAndSmellLikeBooze · 26/08/2020 17:26

My title isn't wrong.

It is. They did let you in.

I wasn't allowed in the shop unless I could provide a valid reason to be going in through the exit.

One way systems in shops are standard at the moment. If you want/need to go a different way for any reason including health reasons, you have to ask. You asked, the person checked, they let you.

I'm not going to complain but probably won't shop there for a while as the stock was pretty bad anyway.

You’re not going to complain that they followed a procedure which keeps people safer and allowed you to enter....erm....ok then

You lot are a funny bunch.*

😜

Crankley · 26/08/2020 17:28

“Be kind” seems to be used exclusively by dickheads who want everyone to treat them nice than they treat people.

Exactly my thoughts.
