I wasn't allowed in the shop

Should I complain about this or just let it go?

I wanted to go into a shop today with my ds who is 3. The shop is within a shopping center which has a lift and escalators. The escalator leads directly into the shop but before Covid you could also use the lift to enter from the first floor.

I cannot use an escalator as they make me go dizzy and I would need to carry ds. It just wouldn't have been safe for me so we took the lift.

When we got to the top the lady at the door said this is exit only. I needed to go in from the escalator at the bottom. I said I couldn't use the escalator for health reasons. She then went on to ask me what health reasons. I then had to explain to her and she said she will check with her manager if I can go in Hmm it was a big exit and no one was even coming out at the time.
She radioed over to them and said I have a lady and child here who don't want to use the escalator can they come in through the exit?
I didn't hear the reply but she then gestured for me to enter.

It made me annoyed probably more than it should have. Would you complain or just leave it at that as after all I did get to go in the shop?

You did get into the shop and the woman was just doing her job. Find something else to worry about.

workhomesleeprepeat · 26/08/2020 15:07

Why the need to lie for the title? You were let into the shop Confused

No need for big song and dance. I don't really see what the big deal is having to tell a stranger about a medical issue. I don't think you'd get very far with a complaint.

Blankblankblank · 26/08/2020 15:10

I wasn't allowed in the shop

You were. She was just doing her job so that everyone doesn’t go in that way. Let it go.

Brieminewine · 26/08/2020 15:11

Why are you lying? You were allowed in the shop. They made an exception for you. What’s to complain about? Get over yourself.

Graciebobcat · 26/08/2020 15:12

I think you are making a good point, OP. People with disabilities are currently being forgotten in shops with their often bizarre, illogical and inflexible rules. They clearly need a system where the lift can be taken up and down, without people being given the third degree as to why they need to use a lift.

BeeTrees · 26/08/2020 15:13

But you we’re allowed in, they asked....you explained.....Easy. Complain about what?

ILikeGlitter · 26/08/2020 15:13

My title isn't wrong. I wasn't allowed in the shop unless I could provide a valid reason to be going in through the exit.
I'm not going to complain but probably won't shop there for a while as the stock was pretty bad anyway.

You lot are a funny bunch.

I have a spare grip you are welcome to borrow it.

MarshaBradyo · 26/08/2020 15:15

Leave it

bloodywhitecat · 26/08/2020 15:16

OP - "Am I being unreasonable?"

MN - a resounding "Yes! You are"

And we're a 'funny bunch'? Maybe you should look in the mirror to find the 'funny' one OP.

I was “on your side” until I read this. Trying to argue that your title wasn’t wrong (come on 🙄) and then calling everyone else here funny. Did you show that charming side of yourself to the shop staff?

I agree no-one should have to give details of a health issue - so just say, health issue.

ddl1 · 26/08/2020 15:19

I sympathize, as I myself cannot use escalators due to co-ordination difficulties, and once experienced something similar to you when attending a HOSPITAL appointment (pre-pandemic; they had temporarily changed the location of many things and reduced lift access due to building work). But since you did get in - as I did - I don't think there's much point in writing a letter of complaint. If you use the shop again, perhaps you could ring or e-mail in advance to say that you will need to use a lift rather than an escalator.

listsandbudgets · 26/08/2020 15:20

So you tried to enter a one way shop by the exit. They asked you why then let you go through it anyway? Not sure what the problem is OP.

I do understand about the escalators though they make me a bit dizzy too for some reason. No need to carry your DS though normally just grabbing them by the wrist is enough at that age Grin

Sirzy · 26/08/2020 15:20

So they have a one way system and are - understandably- trying to reduce the amount of people who are going against the system. I really don’t get what your complaint is

ILikeGlitter · 26/08/2020 15:20

Nah your much funnier than me!

Why are so many MNetters so incredulous lately when asked to adhere to the same restrictions as everyone else when out shopping?

You got your own way OP and you're still not happy Confused

180darts · 26/08/2020 15:22

Your title is wrong. You said I wasn't allowed in the shop. But you were Confused

I get dizzy on escalators. I would have used the lift and explained why I couldn't use it and asked if it was possible to go in through the exit. It's the shop's right to refuse entry to anyone so not sure you can complain tbh

You are being a drama llama

FallonsTeaRoom · 26/08/2020 15:23

My title isn't wrong. I wasn't allowed in the shop unless I could provide a valid reason to be going in through the exit

If they let one person through unchallenged then everyone would try it on.

MarshaBradyo · 26/08/2020 15:25

Op it’s such a minor thing. A staff member checked of it was ok then said fine.

FelicityPike · 26/08/2020 15:25

So...they did in fact let you in.....

FlySheMust · 26/08/2020 15:25

Hate dishonest title.

You would be very unreasonable to complain.

TheHappyHerbivore · 26/08/2020 15:26

Could you genuinely be bothered to complain?

EveryPlanetHasAYorkshire · 26/08/2020 15:26

What a weird thread.

TinySleepThief · 26/08/2020 15:26

So what you're actually saying is you expected to just be allowed into the shop via the doors they are using as the exit without anyone stopping you and asking why you were using the doors marked exit??

VodselForDinner · 26/08/2020 15:28

You’re a special little soldier and should have been allowed your own personal entrance, OP.

Hallowed be thine name.

Actually, fuck that, you’re a whingey martyr.
And your title is completely misleading.
