I wasn't allowed in the shop

Should I complain about this or just let it go?

I wanted to go into a shop today with my ds who is 3. The shop is within a shopping center which has a lift and escalators. The escalator leads directly into the shop but before Covid you could also use the lift to enter from the first floor.

I cannot use an escalator as they make me go dizzy and I would need to carry ds. It just wouldn't have been safe for me so we took the lift.

When we got to the top the lady at the door said this is exit only. I needed to go in from the escalator at the bottom. I said I couldn't use the escalator for health reasons. She then went on to ask me what health reasons. I then had to explain to her and she said she will check with her manager if I can go in Hmm it was a big exit and no one was even coming out at the time.
She radioed over to them and said I have a lady and child here who don't want to use the escalator can they come in through the exit?
I didn't hear the reply but she then gestured for me to enter.

It made me annoyed probably more than it should have. Would you complain or just leave it at that as after all I did get to go in the shop?

YABU

You were allowed in the shop. So there’s no issue.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 26/08/2020 15:40

Most places have clear one way systems, did nothing alert you to the fact this was exit only before using the lift?

If not, they could do with better signage.

Would I complain? No.

AnotheBloodyChinHair · 26/08/2020 15:40

No you didn't ask if you were being unreasonable. You asked:

Would you complain or just leave it at that as after all I did get to go in the shop?

Should I complain about this or just let it go?

You've been told to let it go. So do.

NoemiaElara · 26/08/2020 15:40

Oh god get over yourself! They let in the in bloody shop! There are special entrances and exists for a reason and they allowed you to bypass their policy!

TinySleepThief · 26/08/2020 15:40

@ILikeGlitter

I came on here to ask if I was being unreasonable. I obviously am. I am not here to argue with strangers on the internet.

#be kind Smile

The whole be kind stuff works both ways though, do you really think you're being kind in wanting to complain about someone who was simply doing their job?
Bella2020 · 26/08/2020 15:41

They should have accepted your request when you stated health reasons. It annoys me when people think they have the right to pry.

reesewithoutaspoon · 26/08/2020 15:42

How about #be kind to the shop assistants who are doing their best in unusual circumstances. What would be the point of writing a complaint if not to cause trouble for the shop assistant who is following government guidelines. #Be kind goes both ways.

lifesalongsong · 26/08/2020 15:42

Of all the multitude of adjustments we've had to make since March to try and stop the virus and get back to some kind of life this would be struggling to make my top 200, lucky that no one is forced to shop in a particular shop

Elsewyre · 26/08/2020 15:45

@ILikeGlitter

My title isn't wrong. I wasn't allowed in the shop unless I could provide a valid reason to be going in through the exit. I'm not going to complain but probably won't shop there for a while as the stock was pretty bad anyway.

You lot are a funny bunch.

"I wasn't allowed in the shop unless I could provide a valid reason to be going in through the exit. "

^well...yeah?

Medelin · 26/08/2020 15:47

I think it’s worth remembering that in her role she has a duty of care. If you are travelling alone with a small child and choose to disclose that you have a medical condition, she is most likely asking to find out if you might need some extra help, or inform her manager/ appointed person/ first aider that there is a potentially venerable person in store that may need to support. Don’t be so pessimistic, a lot of people in customer facing roles are there to help and not just be nosey Smile

GladAllOver · 26/08/2020 15:49

Bloody hell. The things people find to complain about.

SquirtleSquad · 26/08/2020 15:52

What the fuck? Of course you need a valid reason to enter through the exit - especially at the moment. What a fruit loop.

Soundbyte · 26/08/2020 15:53

You lot are a funny bunch.

Yeah we’re the funny ones Confused

nc600 · 26/08/2020 15:56

Why would you carry a 3 year old on an escalator? Confused

2bazookas · 26/08/2020 15:58

What's wrong? You made a statement, she reasonably asked you to clarify, then sought and obtained permission for you to use an alternative route that suited your needs.

Perfectly reasonable response.

DeeTractor · 26/08/2020 15:58

Why do people always trot out #bEkInD when a thread doesn't go their way?

BubblyBarbara · 26/08/2020 15:58

You should wear a wrist band or lanyard which has your disability (e.g. "I get dizzy on escalator") on it so you can avoid embarrassing situations like this in future.

ScarMatty · 26/08/2020 16:00

be kind

And yet here you are OP, calling us the funny bunch and getting annoyed with the lady in the shop

Chloemol · 26/08/2020 16:01

Oh get over it, we are in the middle of a pandemic and they have set up the shop in lines with guidelines. You explained why you couldn’t do as they needed and were let in the shop

Move on

BeingLonely · 26/08/2020 16:02

So your complaining that they questioned you?

You do realise the staff member has been told to do this and to try and keep people using certain routes? It’s not like they went out their way to disrupt you.

Grow up

Verbald · 26/08/2020 16:02

I try to avoid esculators since witnessing someone fall down one and trying to assist in saving their life, it makes me dizzy and hyperventilate. If you had already travelled in the lift which is presumably the most risky part transmission wise, why not just say next time use the entrance. I don't like the intrusive questions either, and then checking with the manager whether you have a valid enough reason just shows how serious people take invisible conditions (not very). I would let it go though, she's obviously been told to do so.

bigknickersbigknockers · 26/08/2020 16:03

There was nobody else using the entrance/exit so no they didnt need to ask you why IMHO. Just another example of shops making up rules for people to follow.

Lweji · 26/08/2020 16:05

You got annoyed with the shop worker and with the pps on this thread.

It might help to reflect on why.

Clue, it might not be "them".

AryaStarkWolf · 26/08/2020 16:05

YABU she's just doing her job, she let you in, get over it

Lweji · 26/08/2020 16:06

BTW, you could have lied about the health reasons. She didn't ask for proof or anything.
