I would say the binge drinking culture of the UK

OP posts:
AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 25/08/2020 23:58

The self obsession without having any idea about personal responsibility.

The pressure of conforming to a new, distorted and totally unnatural idea of beauty e.g lip fillers, face fillers, Botox, implants, lipo, nose jobs, veneers, steroids (for males)

The fact that adults’ feelings are prioritised over scientific facts or children’s well-being.

This is for suddenarborealstop and inching

What do you dislike about your country's culture?
Cattenberg · 26/08/2020 00:05

English/British exceptionalism. We’re not a superpower anymore and we can’t expect special treatment. It doesn’t matter how firmly we make our demands or how much we “believe in ourselves”.

This delusion is really holding the UK back. The rest of the world has moved on from the days of the British Empire and WWII. Why can’t we?

Tillygetsit · 26/08/2020 00:10

The obsession with immigrants especially from people who refer to themselves as ex pats.

SheepandCow · 26/08/2020 00:13

The contempt for disabled and elderly people in the UK. Also, the acceptance of widespread homelessness.

1000umbrellas · 26/08/2020 00:13

A national identity that seems entirely bound up in hating the English rather than pride in our own culture and achievements. Scotland, if you hadn't guessed.

Margotshypotheticaldog · 26/08/2020 00:13

Just re the pp who said being proud to be English =racist, I remember a few years ago having a conversation with a young German woman who felt the same about her nationality.
And (again anecdotally) I believe there is a feeling among some Spaniards of having never gotten over the Golden days 700 odd years ago as a colonial superpower. disclaimer I'm neither German nor Spanish, so open to correction on these points.

2018SoFarSoGreat · 26/08/2020 00:14

TRUMP.

GUNS.

Both of these things in equal measure. Well, no. The former is more disturbing, and dangerous.

Cattenberg · 26/08/2020 00:21

The Netherlands - the habit of slagging off foreigners to their faces in Dutch. It’s sometimes really crude and unpleasant, but I think Dutch people do it purely because they can. I’ve heard some of my nicest Dutch acquaintances indulging in this hobby.

Cooroo · 26/08/2020 00:22

Litter. Lack of interest in other cultures.

Can I just defend Lycra? I'm a 60 year old female mountain biker and occasional road cyclist, and Lycra really is the most comfortable clothing to ride in if you're doing more than a few miles. My Lycra doesn't hurt you!

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/08/2020 00:26

The resentment some show towards asylum seekers and benefit claimants, while also not caring multinational corporations avoiding tax.

bananaskinsnomnom · 26/08/2020 00:31

The fact that flying the British Flag (or English flag) means you’re working class or a member or supporter of UKIP.

The education system and nanny state - the fact that the nation and the media and the authorities place the children as the complete responsibility of education / early years employees, never mind anything else. Nanny state - everything is everyone else’s fault. The lawsuit culture that’s filtering through. Compensation for minor inconveniences.

WildOrchids67 · 26/08/2020 00:40

Compensation culture. The smallest thing that goes wrong can result in people wanting money and then complaining when they don't get it.

Can you tell I work in customer service?

Scoopstroop · 26/08/2020 00:41

Litter is a massive bugbear of mine.
Just why?
We're not short of bins, my own street is littered and every resident has 3 bloody great big bins.
I went to Switzerland and the first thing i noticed was how clean it is; the only police we saw were watering plants.
The fact that dogs are more loved than old people and children.

PinkyBrain · 26/08/2020 00:43

Nothing really, I’ll take it all, good and bad. I genuinely feel incredibly lucky to have been born here and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. I think I’m a rarity at the moment though. Grin

FuckingBlippi · 26/08/2020 00:51

Came here to say binge drinking culture in the uk.

Other than that it has to be the ignorance/lack of education on other cultures. People here are so racist and judgemental towards people they see as 'different'.

LostInTheColonies · 26/08/2020 00:59

@WitchenKitch

"What culture?"
  • New Zealand
🤣🤣🤣
Porcupineinwaiting · 26/08/2020 01:02

British exceptionalism.

Cringeworthy when someone's spouting how wonderful xyz is, point out that actually in "name another country" they do things slightly differently and get even better results , cue huge huff and pout and "well it's even worse in "namesanother country". Total fuckingunwillingless to learn anything from anyone.

Ds2 got it in the neck from granny last week for daring to say he preferred the beaches on the Med to ones in the uk because the water's warmer. British beaches cannot be bettered apparently and that includes water temp. The fact granny has no experience of beaches anywhere outside of the uk except for Ireland and the French Alps wasnt a barrier to this opinion.

Griselda1 · 26/08/2020 01:07

As a previous poster said, the fact that we almost seem ashamed of our own flag and identity.

squeekums · 26/08/2020 01:11

australias beer love - why, its foul

Staffy1 · 26/08/2020 01:21

Boiled potatoes!! I was nodding along completely agreeing with your list and then this gem popped up at the end 😆 The thing is, I believe that you are correct, boiled potatoes are not pleasant (and I love a potato!!) They are like an unfinished symphony, an ingredient not a product, a potato’s poor relative!! (Sorry boiled potato if you are reading

I actually miss boiled potatoes. Used to get them relentlessly growing up (Irish mother), now never have them as no one in the family likes them. I quite fancy some, with a generous sprinkling of salt.

PhilSwagielka · 26/08/2020 01:22

Classism and snobbery.

WeFoundAHat · 26/08/2020 01:22

The racism and xenophobia. Irrationality like Brexit and an inability to admit a decision was wrong and change direction. The superficial nature of political discourse with soundbites and slogans, as though we are all primary school children incapable of grasping complex facts and nuance. Intellectual laziness. The competitive stupitidy encouraged in schools, where being intelligent is something reviled. Bullying (this doesn't even exist as a concept in some cultures). And as many PP have said the idea that there are rights with no responsibilities. A general culture of selfishness and unkindness. So many things.

WeFoundAHat · 26/08/2020 01:22

Oh, and brussel sprouts. Envy

stopgap · 26/08/2020 01:26

Brit here, but live in the US and loathe:

Guns
The evangelical right and Q Anon nutcases
The deep-seated racism
