Isn’t so bad** ( teach me to MN before I’ve had two coffees!)

Rule Britannia and Land of Hop and Glory was nearly axed because the BLM campaigners objected to it being played at Last night of the proms

This is nonsense. BLM had nothing to do with it - it was suggested that instrumental versions only should be played because, guess what, there won't be an audience in the hall to sing along because of coronavirus restrictions.

This was a row completely made up by the press to bash the BBC. And the power of the press to do that - and be believed - is a part of the UK's culture that I detest.

It seems now that there will be singers in the hall to sing the words. So that's all right then.

The level of casual racism... 'I'm not being racist but.....'
The lenient prison sentences for absolutely despicable crimes.
The teacher hating. All the people who said teachers were doing FA during the pandemic are complete idiots. They have absolutely NO idea at all what goes on in school. Frankly, they just gave a chip on their shoulder because teachers have set holidays. (Which are spent mostly planning and assessing BTW)
THE DAILY MAIL - the most disgusting rag in the world. People who read it and BELIEVE it are complete idiots.
The tories!
Fox hunting

I’m an ex teacher, with lots of teacher friends and many (all I have spoken to) of them have seen this last six months as a lovely extended holiday.

@Reubenshat

phatsandsmall I think it’s because it’s frowned up on to fly a British flag. Rule Britannia and Land of Hop and Glory was nearly axed because the BLM campaigners objected to it being played at Last night of the proms You can’t admit that you think this country is good. I’ve been all over the world, my dd lives in Dubai and tbh this country is so bad compared to others.

I’ve been to some right shit holes around the world were litter was shocking and upsetting on a much bigger scale than it is here.

Lots of sweeping statements on this thread but not all of England is in a state. You tend to get litter the closer you get to city centres. Where I live people are very proud of there areas.

I wish people could me more proud of this country. The government is shite bit that doesn’t reflect the whole of the nation

Thanks for answering me.. I genuinely never heard of any that happening. Seems daft.

Ahh now that makes sense!!! Smile

baseless arrogance
two-facedness
pretentiousness
racism and xenophobia

The class system and snobbery about accents.

mynamesnotMa · 05/09/2020 14:44

The class system - on the trains

Inverted snobbery UK

cologne4711 · 05/09/2020 15:14

Like what? The only thing I can think of is global trade

Railways. Although they brought those to non-British-colonies too, like Argentina. Also the rule of law and legal system (though with the loss of legal aid we're not exactly at the forefront of the rule of law ourselves now)

Bad parenting - causing bratty children and the cycle continues on

just proving my point. Maybe the kids were always going to be bratty and even if you had "parented" them perfectly, they would still have been a pain.

cologne4711 · 05/09/2020 15:14

The class system - on the trains not a UK thing, they have different class carriages in lots of countries

RaraRachael · 05/09/2020 15:29

Scotland here -
drinking culture
terrible diet
moaning
criticism of anyone who tries to better themselves (who do they think they are etc)
mindless vandalism of anything that's done to make the town look better,
gossiping about people and thinking they know and are entitled to talk abut people's business - even when they don't

Yes - I'd live anywhere else if I could afford to!

jessstan2 · 05/09/2020 15:30

We used to have different class carriages on British rail, maybe they still exist! A first class was more expensive than second, it wasn't really about class as such, more what you could afford. I twice travelled first class by mistake - honestly it was a mistake, I just got in the wrong carriage and didn't notice. Both times the ticket collector ignored.

PracticalMagic111 · 05/09/2020 15:34

UK.

-The lack of reusing and the throw away culture. It rages me how wasteful we can be. E.g A small hole in some trousers means throw in the bin. Or throwing away an old but working kettle just because they want a new the latest trend.
Also how obsessed we are with "offers" especially when it comes to food. Like buying ten yoghurts just because they are on offer when in reality you are only going to eat 4, then throw the rest away.

-Entitlment to free things and the rudeness if they don't get anything for free. Always wanting to blame someone no matter how small. I think working in hospitality highlighted how much this happens. I once had someone scream in my face and demanding a free meal because their BBQ sauce was in a side dish on their plate rather than directly put onto their burger. What?!

-Others have said this on here. But I also hate the snowflake "comeback". And the fact that people in their 20's are seen to have it easy. Having a degree means nothing now (most of the time) working for free to gain experience is seen as a norm and that still isn't enough. Even when you work your ass off it's never enough and you could and should be doing more, I don't think this has helped with mental wellbeing.
I think this has also created a stigma in being able to speak up if you are struggling mentally.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 05/09/2020 16:32

I’m really OFF the UK right now

The class system
The class divisions
The obsessions with neighbourhoods and schools

ForrestTrump · 05/09/2020 19:19

It's the whinging culture of the UK that really gets me...Grin

In other countries people seem more forthright and will speak out at the time rather than go home and bitch about it.

The nepotism of the Welsh

ForrestTrump · 05/09/2020 19:22

Our culture will likely change hugely in coming decades anyway as White British will surely become the minority - in a fair few cities now (including Brum) non white Brits are now the majority of under 20s, whilst in some others I believe the overall population are majority British non White.

the last Uk census stated that 86% of the population is white British. That’s still a fair majority tbh

Yes, but it will very possibly change quite dramatically as older generations pass away. In a good few major cities the majority of the youth are British non White and I believe it is more common to have 2+ children in some cultures. Certainly Birmingham and a or of northern cities are extremely different to how they were 50 years ago in terms of demographic.

I’d like to see some stats on this but I don’t disbelieve you.

What I think is important to remember is culture changes without the influence of foreigners...I mean for example, my fathers family is Irish. In recent decades, certain cultural views have really changed there, like on gay marriage and abortion. Those changes happened because of Irish people, not because of outside influence. Culture is always in motion.

I'll try and dig out the source when I have time tomorrow - think it may have actually been an article in the Birmingham Post but could be wrong.

Indeed culture does evolve without outsude influence, but I do believe there is a lot of outside influence nonetheless. A real shocker for me was watching Peaky Blinders and realising that a lot of areas that are now majority Muslim were completely different in the recent past. Not that it bothers me, it's just interesting.
