You need to look up jumping spiders, they're great, so clever and cute, you can see they're watching you when you are near them!

I do have snakes myself @bookmum08, and understand why you're scared of them, I used to be too, but then became fascinated by them, and now own three! Look up Chris Harding on Youtube talking about all his snakes. He has a Ball/Royal Python named Bobby, usually curled around his neck as he's talking, he's one of the most calm, chilled out snakes I've ever seen, and not scary at all!.

AriesTheRam · 25/08/2020 11:42

@Fckingfuming thanks for that!! Evil Grin

My goddaughter in Edinburgh saw a big spider in her flat - the picture on facebook was captioned it's as big as my face - it wasn't more hand sized.

She called for help - first to her fiance in Seattle, then her dad in Dumfries and me in Prestwick. Eventually she handled it herself. With a Delia Smith hardback.

AriesTheRam · 25/08/2020 11:50

That was supposed to be a grin not flowers!!

I think you did really well! You were afraid, but you tackled it anyway!

Brilliant lesson!

Fatarseflanagan09 · 25/08/2020 12:00

I don't mind spiders and snakes but I can't understand why people have those big cockroaches for pets, cockroaches are horrible, imagine it getting out and crawling all over your face while you sleep.

Arthersleep · 25/08/2020 12:00

I knew that this was going to be about spiders!! Raid is your friend! (Red can of cochroach and ant killer). It's the Novichok of the spider world! One spray and they are dead within 2-3 minutes. They may try to slowly crawl off, but they will die. You can spray them from 2-3 m away, esp if a new can. But 6 cans and have one in each room. Have one next to you whilst watching TV at night and carry two on either hip in a pistol holster!! You can also spray behind wardrobes/in cracks etc and the effects will last for 4 weeks!! My life has improved slightly since discovering Raid!!

Fckingfuming · 25/08/2020 12:01

Awwww sorry op, I was just trying to say spiders are fascinating, and thought if you saw a cute lil spider that had a big personality like the jumping spider you'd be more inclined to think 'aaaaaawwwwwww!' instead or 'AAAAAAARRRRRGGGHHgetitoutgetitout!' I don't particularly like spiders myself, and usually do the glass and card thing, but would consider holding a jumping spider Grin

BadDucks · 25/08/2020 12:05

Feel your pain OP. We have literally just cut our holiday short because our quaint holiday cottage in the arse end of nowhere was in fact just one big spider infestation. They were literally just popping up everywhere. A big fat one on DC’s pillow was the last straw. Gutted but just couldn’t bare it any longer!

HouchinBawbags · 25/08/2020 12:08

I never showed fear of spiders (although I'm terrified. All three kids are scared of spiders. I think it's part nature part nurture.
I love bees and am not afraid at all but my kids are scared. Luck of the draw I guess.

PoloNeckKnickers · 25/08/2020 12:09

I hate spiders and DH always picks them up and puts them outside at home but it's a different story when I'm in the classroom and am expected to deal with spiders/wasps etc by the kids. In previous classes, fearless children were given the job title of 'pest controller' as they were happy (and proud) to catch spiders and put them out! In the last class I had (Y4), even the TA would brick it at the sight of a spider. I do the 'cup and card' technique. Cup over spider, slide card under, and empty out of a window,

Deathraystare · 25/08/2020 12:11

Well obvs you could not help it.

Interestingly (or not) I was not afraid of spiders - used to get lots in a shared bedroom and would race them with my brother.

However, when we moved, there was a big spider on my ceiling. I got Dad who did not seem too thrilled. I thought it was because he was watching tv but when Mum got back she said she was surprised that he got rid of the spider as he has an absolute phobia of them!

Hidingtonothing · 25/08/2020 12:13

I'm an ex-phobic, no idea why but in the last couple of years I've just stopped being afraid of insects, can even let a bee or wasp buzz round me now without screaming and flapping my arms Grin

DD did pick up some of my fear when she was younger but over the last two years we've both become a bit fascinated by insects and have ended up learning loads about them which seems to have made them even less scary somehow.

Spiders in our house all get a name and we do progress reports to each other about where they've moved to overnight now Smile Stuff like that feels like a minor miracle to someone who would once stay up all night armed with a can of raid and a big hard backed book because a spider had been seen and 'lost' Blush

Just wanted you to know you won't necessarily always feel like this OP, I wish I could tell you why I'm no longer scared (reckon I'd make a fortune if I could!) but at least it shows it can happen.

StillRowing · 25/08/2020 12:16

My mum is terrified of them if anything it made me less scared as it was my job at home to get rid of them even at 2

AriesTheRam · 25/08/2020 12:17

@Arthursleep thanks ill definitely try that.

@AriesTheRam

Best of it was ds was like " its ok mum just pretend its a bat with more legs" wtaf
.... 😂 He sounds ace !
DianasLasso · 25/08/2020 12:19

Think of it as a bat with more legs Grin sounds like your DS is not scarred by the situation.

I think there's a difference between letting our children see we're human by occasionally losing it in circumstances where they can see they themselves are safe (this can be a good thing so long as it's not all the time) and consciously setting a good example of bravery when you're bricking it (which can also be a good thing).

My e.g. of the latter was going on an outward bound type course with DS and trying coasteering: we had to jump from a 6 foot high rock into the sea at one point. I was bricking it, so was my adult friend, but we gamely went ahead and did it... then our children decided they weren't as daft as their mums and opted for the lower jump Grin. For the former, it was both of us just allowing ourselves to sit there in floods of tears when our cat got run over Sad.

notalwaysalondoner · 25/08/2020 12:20

I have to admit, I am scared of spiders and heights and so is my mum. Spiders I am certain I learned from her. When I was under 7 or so I used to happily pick up big spiders for her but I learnt to be scared. Heights came later when I was in my late teens so it maybe was more of an independent fear rather than learned. But I don’t blame you for showing fear, it’s impossible not to even if you know it’s not the best habit for them to learn.

HazelBite · 25/08/2020 12:25

I am genuinely intrigued as to why people are terrified of spiders. Understandable if you live in a country where they are poisonous if they bite you and I can understand a fear of snakes or insects that can sting, but those poor house spiders really don't deserve to be squashed, think of the flies and mozzies they catch in their webs!

CarolVordermansArse · 25/08/2020 12:26

Your son could be the official humane spider catcher with one of these:

Picklypickles · 25/08/2020 12:29

I was getting the children ready for bed last week when my 8yr old came running into the bathroom to tell me there was a bug on a toy cat in her room. I got a bit of tissue paper to go scoop up the bug and strolled up to Patch the Cat, reached out my hand and then saw the LEGS! It wasn't a bug it was a fucking massive crunchy house spider, and I jumped backwards like I'd been electrocuted, daughter sees me freak out and wails "oh no, is it a spider?" and all I can do is what I always do when I see a house spider and start having a panic attack, then with spectacular timing my oh comes home to save the day. About the only use he has!

seayork2020 · 25/08/2020 12:30

I get scared when I look up and a plate size spider is looking down at me, also the large scar in my let shows they can sure bite!

spiderlight · 25/08/2020 12:41

This spray seems to work, and we didn't have any big buggers in the living rooms last year after buying the ultrasonic plugs. I also wipe down the floors with Mr Muscle wipes with orange oil, which they hate - fascinating fact: they taste with their feet. DS has seen me freak out over spiders though - I'm severely phobic despite trying several different types of treatment and there have been times when I've just been caught off guard and unable to be jolly brave mummy. I've always explained it to him that it's a phobia and it's just me being scared of something that really isn't scary or threatening, and now he'll catch them and put them out - We have a bristly spider-catcher that works well, although DS is happy to use the cup-and-card method. I did have to deter him from bringing them to show me though - he tried that once, showing off in front of his friend, and I nearly went through the front wall of the house.

winewellies · 25/08/2020 12:46

In the absence of my spider catching DH the other night/morning .. on a middle of the night trip to the loo I spotted a House Tarantula scaling the woodchip wallpaper like a climbing wall (yep still doing up the house , think we're in Year 10 of a DIY SOS situation here) ... thankfully 13yr old DS2 was still XBoxing Hmm.. so we both stood and watched it throw itself off the wall and onto the laundry basket where DS expertly whacked it with a towel and threw a book on its corpse .. so I could go to the loo and sleep easy
He is now my favourite child Grin

Inthemuckheap · 25/08/2020 12:46

My mother is terrified of spiders - she will not go into a room with one in and will even leave the house.

I don't mind them - maybe because I spent a lot of my childhood removing them and putting them outside as my father was travelling abroad for work 90% of the time.

My daughter is terrified of them - not a learned response at all. I was tempted to book her onto the London Zoo arachnophobia course to try and change her perception of them but she said she wouldn't go if I did.
