For me it's lorries in the middle lane on motorways, driving parallel to another. Yes I know they have deadlines, but miles and miles side by side? 😡

@PaddyF0dder

Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) (also known as "vehicle tax", "car tax" or "road tax", and formerly as a "tax disc") is an annual tax that is levied as an excise duty and which must be paid for most types of vehicles which are to be used (or parked) on public roads in the United Kingdom.
That's from Wikipedia.

It's a tax payable by some road-users and only required of them if they take their vehicle on the public road. VED may be its official name, but "road tax" is a perfectly understandable shorthand that's not going to be confused with anything else.

19lottie82 · 25/08/2020 19:56

People who don't seem to understand yellow box junctions. They drive into them then block all the oncoming traffic.

There’s nothing worse! They’re still not going anywhere and now no one else can go anywhere either........ this totally gives me the rage! I’m America you can get fined for stopping in a box, they should really bring that in here!

19lottie82 · 25/08/2020 19:59

People who try to wave at you to move out when they have right of way, then get snippy when you don’t...... and it’s often dangerous.

You are still, somewhat unbelievably, missing the point.

The point is that someone who pays road tax, VED, disk tax or fucking whatever you want to call it does not recieve some sort of superiority to other road users who don't pay it.

People who go around saying that cyclists, or horse riders, or pedestrians have less right to use the roads because they don't pay it are unargubly utter dickheads who probably are too stupid or ignorant to be trusted with a driving licence.

Marriedtoapenguin · 25/08/2020 20:06

Middle lane hoggers especially those who got at around 5 miles an hour under the speed limit and stay there even though lane 1 is empty.

That's when you need police cars armed with disintegration cannons.

Tailgaters. Just don't. There's a reason I'm in the lane I'm in and when I can move back to lane 2 etc I will. Just because you don't mind hammering through a speed camera area doesn't mean I'm OK with it.

People who's indicators don't work. Especially when you're waiting to turn out of a junction.

Cyclists riding like they're in a peloton who will never single file to allow overtaking. Credit to those who do though.

Twats who don't say thank you. It takes less than a second to do it. That's another automatic trip to the disintegration chamber frankly.

People who noodle along then speed up the second you overtake them. See previous punishments.

And relax.

safariboot · 25/08/2020 20:10

@Pleasebeafleabite

You do realise that your fog lights are blinding other drivers because you’re using them in the wrong conditions?

No they aren’t. I’ve driven in heavy rain enough times on the motorway to know that seeing brake lights is much easier than seeing normal tail lights. Once it gets to that stage I put on my rear fog lights. The Highway Code allows fog lights in poor visibility it does not exclude heavy rain in this

Fog lights are for 100 metres visibility or less. At 70 that's 3 seconds travel, at 30 it's 7 1/2 seconds. It's rare for rain to reduce visibility that much.
TheHappyHerbivore · 25/08/2020 20:11

Tailgaters! I always slow right down to piss them off (and to protect myself in case there genuinely is a need for an emergency stop!)

DadDadDad · 25/08/2020 20:18

@BoingBoingyBoing - I've already said I never argued that other road users should pay the tax, and in fact I don't think cyclists should, and I certainly feel no superiority over cyclists (I'm a driver and a cyclist).

It's quite possible for me to hold two ideas in my head at the same time:

  1. That (as you say) renaming it road tax doesn't somehow make the case that all road users should pay it.
  1. it's perfectly fine in ordinary discussion to call it road tax, and those who insist you can't call it that (even though it's a tax paid by some road-users) are too hung-up on the fact its official name is VED.

Just because I address point 2 doesn't mean I've missed point 1.

NoseRinger · 25/08/2020 20:21

@greenforme

I'm with you on cyclists. IMO anyone using the roads should pay road tax and be insured. I include horses in that too
Sorry, but I must disagree with this. A lot of people cycle because they can't afford a car. Also, it is good for the environment - which is a massively important thing in the age of climate change.
longtompot · 25/08/2020 20:27

Tailgating. The worst one was before lockdown. We were doing the speed limit and they were right up behind us. We got to a dual carriageway but dh didn't increase his speed, and they stayed behind us. We eventually went down to about 30 mph before they decided to overtake us. It was a bit worrying as they were swerving so much behind us like they were going to over take but just sat right behind us!
People who don't understand lanes on roundabouts. Or rather, don't read which lane they should be in or read the road markings.
People who speed up when you try to overtake, when it's safe to do so, when the whole time they were 10-20 mph below the speed limit.

safariboot · 25/08/2020 20:31

People who don't know how to drive on motorways. I genuinely think it should be part of the driving test.

IIRC a major reason it isn't is a lot of Britain is too far from any motorways. That said I see no reason why tests couldn't include motorways where practical.

Oh, drivers who think that paying "road tax" gives them a God-given right to decide who may and may not use the road are one of my driving hates.

CantThinkOfAName92 · 25/08/2020 20:37

Tailgating
And speeding....
And speeding out of nowhere and sitting right up my bum when I'm doing the speed limit!!! Happens all the time driving through the village I live.

And drivers on roundabouts. In the past week I have had someone drift over the line into my lane, and a car drive straight off bypass in front of me as I signalled to move into the outer lane....if I hadn't been prepared in both cases and slowed they'd have been in the side of me!!!

FastFood · 25/08/2020 21:00

Anyone who use these.

People pointing out that the charge is called VED and not road tax are not being picky.

They are just stating a fact, particually given the context that road tax is always preceded by the words "I pay my" and followed by the words "so I'm a massive cock who thinks that gives me licence to drive cyclists into a ditch".

PawPawNoodle · 25/08/2020 22:05

Cyclist with those really bright flashing LED lights that dazzle me so I can't see - honestly more likely to smack into you.

People break-checking me when I'm not tailgating - just because I'm just not 72 nautical miles behind you, doesn't mean I'm up your arse.

People that speed up when I'm overtaking.

PawPawNoodle · 25/08/2020 22:08

@TheHappyHerbivore

Tailgaters! I always slow right down to piss them off (and to protect myself in case there genuinely is a need for an emergency stop!)
FYI its not recommended that you do that, its as dangerous as tailgating.
Pedallleur · 25/08/2020 22:13

There is no road tax. It vanished in the 1930s. Many cyclists like myself have cars but choose not to use them so I'm doing you all a favour by keeping one less car off the road

SBTLove · 25/08/2020 22:13

People who putter along at 30mph on a NSL road oblivious to the 2 mile tailback behind them, clearly never glance in their mirror!!
Also, stop in the middle of a busy road slam into reverse and assume everyone on sight of their reverse lights will stop and allow them to manoeuvre into their desired parking space!! Again haven’t checked their
mirrors to see if it’s safe to reverse.

Darkdecent · 25/08/2020 22:14

People driving up my arse! Had a woman do it to me today. I slowed right down and drove like a 90 yr old until she turned off. Boy racers who generally have one arm hanging out the window, exhaust blowing, fag hanging out of their mouths. If only someone would tell them 'you don't look cool, you look like a complete bell end!' And you're bloody dangerous!'

PushyMeez · 25/08/2020 22:16

@PolPotNoodle your second one made me laugh. So true!

LightDrizzle · 25/08/2020 22:27

Tailgating.
In my early 20s I regularly commuted down a stretch of the M40 north of Oxford.
In the old gold Volvo 340, I'd have Mercs and BMWs permanently sat in my arse despite travelling at the speed of the car in front of me at an appropriate distance. Miraculously, when driving in exactly the same manner in the Daimler V12, it was very rare.
I did get a lot of boy racers clock the tiny blonde woman in the big posh car at traffic lights on the dual carriageway and try to race me, I wasn’t mature enough not to pretend not to notice their frantic revving and once the lights changed, leave them for dust after the briefest lag on the kickdown.

Lane hogs also annoy me but the sheer pointlessness and danger of tailgating infuriates me.

DadDadDad · 25/08/2020 22:30

OK, I'll get into the habit of calling it vehicle tax then as it seems to upset so many people to refer to a tax related to using the roads as a road tax.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 25/08/2020 22:35

Tailgating - absolutely. So dangerous!

People who cut off the corner turning from a major to minor road (or any road!). You don’t know nothing is coming. Stop it.

People with no lane discipline- I agree.

People who undertake you when your previous lane (say you’ve come off a roundabout or junction but joined from different directions) has taken you into the right hand lane. You want to pull into the left lane so that they can overtake if they want to, but they block you from doing so by undertaking! People who undertake (or overtake on the left to use the correct term) in any circumstances.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 25/08/2020 22:38

People break-checking me when I'm not tailgating - just because I'm just not 72 nautical miles behind you, doesn't mean I'm up your arse.

^^
Sounds like you probably are up their arse (tailgating) if they’ve felt the need to break check you. Behave!

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 25/08/2020 22:40

Oh I’ve got another one - people who put : leave their beam (aka full head lights - as opposed to what we think of as head lights but is actually called dipped head lights I believe) on when your are coming towards them. You don’t need it if there are cars coming towards you and it’s dangerous to have them on.
