I miss my old hamster

This probably seems weird but my hamster died 4 days ago and I adored him.
So I got a new hamster today who is so cute and I was drawn to her straight away.

I have a big hamster cage so I thought I could give a lovely home to another hamster.
I am so glad I got this hamster but every time I go and see it in his cage, it makes me miss my old hamster.
She has his old toys (which I disinfected) and it makes me feel sad that this was once old hamster's home.

I know I will give this hamster as much love as my old but I just cant believe my old one died (he died of old age).

Sorry this is probably weird but hamsters are one of my favourite pets so I get attached to them as others get attached to dogs and cats 😂

It's not weird at all. I'm sorry for your loss, he was your pet and you loved and cared for him. He passed 4 days ago so of course you're going to be grieving and it will be tough seeing all of his things but it does get easier. I think it is nice that you are letting this hamster use his cage.

My dog died just over a year ago and I use one of his leads for my new dog and I still feel a little twinge of sadness when I pick it up because I miss him. But also using his lead for my new girl feels like I get to keep a part of him with us, you know?

I get it after my hamster died it was suggested I had grief counselling as it got to me so bad. For me it took a month to get a new one as I feel in love with him. I kept his favourite things that reminded me of him like his hide but reuse a lot of the same stuff.

I adopted a budgie once and was devastated when he went.

Awww OP Flowers

I love my little ham! He’s a rescue and apparently getting on a bit so I don’t think he’ll be around an awful lot longer but he’s a lovely boy Smile

I still miss my hamster from 23 years ago. She was my little friend and used to run up and down my sleeves.

Boomerwang · 24/08/2020 04:44

I gave you a YABU for saying 'hamster' way too many times in one post.

Come to think of it, I miss my old hamster too. She was smooth and silky, tidy and smelt lovely. Now she's rough and grey with patches and has to be trimmed regularly so she doesn't give static shocks to passersby.

YANBU. It doesn't matter what kind of animal it is, they know how to get an eternal place in your heart.

My dog which I'd had since a pup died last year at 17 years. I was devastated. My parents couldn't stand living in a house that felt empty without a pooch and got another one just five weeks later. Like with the previous one, it was love at first sight but falling in love with a new dog while still grieving for the old one was weird.
