AIBU to think DH's dream home location doesn't exist?

DH has long wanted to live by the sea/water. He grew up near the sea and is desperate for DS to have the same activities available to him (paddle boarding, surfing, beach walks etc)

We were all set to do it this year but seeing the crowds packed into beaches has really put me off. Don't get me wrong, I know tourist spots are obviously busy but the behaviour of people just seems to have gone into overdrive.

DH is convinced we can find somewhere on the coast around the south/south east that won't be rammed like Brighton or Bournemouth in summer and where we can find a four bedroom for around 400k.

I think he's living in a Dreamworld. We aren't tied to anywhere for work as we both work remotely and will continue to be working remotely. obviously want a good school for DS when he's old enough but don't mind somewhere quiet with not much going on in terms of shops, pubs - just one or two of each for convenience would be fine.

I just can't see there being a coastline which doesn't have loads of visitors as soon as the weather is nice, where we can actually afford.

We've had a look on Rightmove but because we can pretty much go anywhere, it's a broad spectrum to search and I think we need to narrow it down a bit.

DH is just desperate to move I think (another issue is I don't think our house will sell, it needs a lot of work but he wants to try and take advantage of the stamp duty holiday)

Am I being a grump? Or realistic?! I feel like if it existed we would have been able to find some houses by now

mumsnet always has someone banging on about Hastings, but for anyone that grew up in Sussex or Kent it is known as the druggie and crime capital of the South East. It hasn't changed that much, the old town is very pretty but you couldn't pay me to live in hastings - make sure you look into it before you make a decision.

ifiwasascent · 23/08/2020 21:58

South Wales!

FenellaMaxwell · 23/08/2020 21:58

Christ don’t look at whitehawk, it’s grim! I think Kent might be your best bet with those criteria but I’d consider going North tbh.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/08/2020 22:00

St Austell area. Some proper ropy bits, but it changes v quickly ie Charlestown/Carlyon Bay

Oly4 · 23/08/2020 22:02

Yes, along the Sussex coast there are loads of small places. Just avoid the major hubs like Brighton!

Putmynewshoeson · 23/08/2020 22:11

Deal in Kent looks nice...

Don't worry, I'm a hardcore details person so I will research very very thoroughly before we make any decisions

Deal is great, OP, I grew up there and live close by to it still. It's definitely worth a look.

Proudboomer · 23/08/2020 22:39

Go west from Brighton and you will find plenty that fit your wish list and budget.

AmberAndAlexsMum · 23/08/2020 22:51

Here in Kent, on the Romney Marsh, you will find seaside property in an area that doesn't get huge crowds in the summer.

Shizzlestix · 23/08/2020 23:06

Anyone mentioned West Wales yet? This is bonkers cheap for what you get.

I dont think Im in your target area, Cornwall but Im sure same applies in most beach places. Don't worry about beaches being too busy, we are 5 mins drive from very popular ones. In May, June, July we go after school for a few hours, often meet friends there and on Friday will stay until sundown (theres a lovely seafood restaurant and bar). Many of the kids clubs and activities take place on the beach and we often bump into their friends there. The weather May-July is usually much better than August. During these months the beaches are quiet then August is CRAZY! But we're only 5 mins away so go after 5pm for a quick swim/paddle. We rarely do a full beach day because we're there regularly for a few hours.

South Wales.

TempestHayes · 23/08/2020 23:33

I've often wondered if it's possible to find somewhere that's by the sea but isn't a beach or a big tourist spot. It just happens to be by the sea. I mean, we have a lot of coast line - I like to think not every inch of it is rammed with tourists.

You could avoid sandy beaches and try and find somewhere stony or more hidden away.

OliviaPopeRules · 24/08/2020 01:38

Ferring or Goring

birchtree23 · 24/08/2020 01:44

Pity he didn't fancy Scotland. We have a 4 bedroom detached house with a sea view looking over the moray firth and bought it for around £205000

planningaheadtoday · 24/08/2020 01:51

There are plenty of places in Dorset. Just not the very over popular, packed bits!

The beaches are small coves and houses are either less than £400k or near to.

The only issue would be these places can be remote if you need to commute.

Whatisgoingdown · 24/08/2020 02:25

Have a look at Selsey. It's usual quite even in summer as there isn't really a tourist trade, no amusements or anything on the coast

Whatisgoingdown · 24/08/2020 02:34

Millington Drive, Selsey, PO20

I didn't want to say it first, but I agree! Hastings has a shabby, run down feeling about it. The seafront is lots of shops selling touristy stuff or hardware. Eastbourne seafront otoh hand is lovely -- no shops, just lovely period houses and hotels. We used to drive through Hastings on the way to Dover and I always thought it looked so ugly and cheap (the seafront).

Hastings is also much further from London than Eastbourne -- the trains from Victoria all pass through Eastbourne to get Hastings, so it's about 30 minutes longer.
Eastbourne is 90 minutes direct to Victoria -- surely doable?
