AIBU to think DH's dream home location doesn't exist?

Putmynewshoeson · 23/08/2020 17:33

DH has long wanted to live by the sea/water. He grew up near the sea and is desperate for DS to have the same activities available to him (paddle boarding, surfing, beach walks etc)

We were all set to do it this year but seeing the crowds packed into beaches has really put me off. Don't get me wrong, I know tourist spots are obviously busy but the behaviour of people just seems to have gone into overdrive.

DH is convinced we can find somewhere on the coast around the south/south east that won't be rammed like Brighton or Bournemouth in summer and where we can find a four bedroom for around 400k.

I think he's living in a Dreamworld. We aren't tied to anywhere for work as we both work remotely and will continue to be working remotely. obviously want a good school for DS when he's old enough but don't mind somewhere quiet with not much going on in terms of shops, pubs - just one or two of each for convenience would be fine.

I just can't see there being a coastline which doesn't have loads of visitors as soon as the weather is nice, where we can actually afford.

We've had a look on Rightmove but because we can pretty much go anywhere, it's a broad spectrum to search and I think we need to narrow it down a bit.

DH is just desperate to move I think (another issue is I don't think our house will sell, it needs a lot of work but he wants to try and take advantage of the stamp duty holiday)

Am I being a grump? Or realistic?! I feel like if it existed we would have been able to find some houses by now

Recent times you are talking about is the extremes, it is not usually like that during Summer or hols...

I moved out of London to a South Suffolk village with a junior (Primary) school 5-9 years -3 tier school system here!

It is bliss, the 'only' problem I encountered was not being able to get a good nights sleep for about 6 weeks due to no sirens, shouting/screams or dogs barking at night!

Your child(ren) will thank you for it one day, it is nicer, safer and you will love it!

AliBear90 · 24/08/2020 18:59

Sherringham or surrounding areas but not sure about prices

CatAndHisKit · 24/08/2020 19:00

About she did say tey have friends and family in the SE so prefer to stay South.
I have a friend in Northumberland - amazing landscape/coast but it is noticeably colder, even when there was heatwave in te Midlands, they stayed too colld for summer. It's fine if someone is used to it but for a southerner, wouldn;t suit everyone.

Lee on Solent near Gosport would fit the bill.

Plunger · 24/08/2020 19:34

Definitely Broadstairs. I was brought up there and there are a number of sandy beaches . Viking Bay is the main one, then Joss Bay and Botany Bay. These are the most popular but there is also St Mary's, Stone, Kingsgate, Dumpton and Louisa Bays.

PuddyMuddles4 · 24/08/2020 19:39

Plenty in the East - you want to avoid Clacton on Sea, but Frinton, Holland etc are much quieter.

Dartmouth in Devon there are lots fresh water rivers and some waterfalls and pretty villages near by the moors , Totnes , hope cove , torquey . there is Wales that has some amazing beaches, mountains rivers and waterfalls and cheap properties . Woodbridge in Suffolk thats along the river . there also some islands dotted around the uk and you surrounded by sea . sometimes when it comes to property its working out , whats more important size of your house or the location that you have make it more important and having to live with one of those choices or making some sort of compromise bigger house or choose a different part of uk that could accommodate all , there is also schools to think about too and not being to far from gp , and hospitals if you planning to have kids / got kids .

I use to live in Wales would love to live there again but being a single mum , my kid having contact with dad , I having to ditch the dream of going Wales as its to far and would impact on contact time , I have found somewhere where to move to that won't compose that and in really good location with good schools .
I won't get much value of property for money , like I would in Wales but I guess its good enough compromise due to the location and what things I be getting locally . you could for me say location is more important then that dream house . just ask your hubby what he feels is more important house or location or look at this way uk has 70 thousand miles of coastline or look all over uk to find that place and home if thats doable .
I use to go to hope cove a lot since I was kid , its change a lot , more holiday homes and retirement homes then locals living there now .
it use to have fishing men but I guess local fishing business been drying up and a lot of them turned to the tourism trade to make some kind of living . being on the coast now days is not the same when your husband or I was kid and tourism and crowds been the norm for years and that something you might have put up if you want live on coast now days , especially in the south and south east where people flock together for sun and sea during the summer months .

Hastings.

Wallyandasnog · 24/08/2020 19:56

I live in bexhill and you can definitely get a modest four bed here for 400k we are 4 mins from brighton so can head thatway easily for a day out but our beaches are never rammed. (Unless eddie izzard is performing at the de la warr)

Sadbri · 24/08/2020 19:57

I originally come from Poole in Dorset. I loved growing up next to the beach and have fond memories of late nights with my friends on the beach. Bournemouth is very hit and miss, the closer to the town centre the busier it becomes. Head out to Boscombe way or Sandbanks way and it’s quieter. Also for water sports Sandbanks is one of the best places for windsurfing and you have the artificial surf they have/had in boscombe side. Poole itself is rather quiet and mostly non touristy even in the summer. To sell it even more you have brownsie island where you have the red squirrels. :) houses have always seemed fairly cheap there, is live to move back, but my other half is very close to his family so doesn’t want to move away too far.

Harls1969 · 24/08/2020 20:08

I spent my first 32 years in Hastings. I will always love it as I grew up there. However, housing is expensive, it's a pain in the arse getting anywhere (you're on the A21 for the best part of an hour on a good day before you get to the motorway) and the coastal roads are often jammed, the town is very busy in summer and dead in winter, the shopping centre is small and not great. However, it's by the sea, it's historical, it's not far to the countryside. Bexhill, Rye, Battle and Eastbourne are within easy distance and are lovely for a walk around. Parts of Hastings and St Leonards are lovely (parts aren't!) You could get a house within your budget. I do sometimes miss the sea, but certainly didn't take advantage of it when I lived there (the beach is mostly pebble and shingle). Good luck whatever you decide

Vinomummyinlockdown · 24/08/2020 20:10

My family live in Torquay and it’s fine bar a few weeks a year

BigRedBoat · 24/08/2020 20:25

Portsmouth has the sea, 90 mins train to central London, beach and a surprisingly good amount of parks/green space for a city and you could definitely get a 4 bed for

QueenBee42 · 24/08/2020 20:31

Dymchurch Kent has a beautiful sandy beach that goes on for miles, you have Ashford for shopping, links to London. Dover and trips to France not to far. Or in Sussex Eastbourne or Bexhill are far quieter than Brighton but beach is stoney. Lots of property for around your budget to.

UglyBoy19 · 24/08/2020 20:39

If you rush to take advantage of the stamp duty holiday, you are likely to pay inflated House prices IMO. This will negate the duty. There is a possibility that the holiday will be extended but If you’re in a chain, you’re unlikely to complete before 31st March. I think you are being realistic .

BikeTyson · 24/08/2020 20:40

Tynemouth. Beautiful sandy beaches, lovely town, great surfing, once the kids are older they can transport themselves about on the metro so you don’t have to play taxi all the time. 2.5 hours on the train back to London. If your home beach gets too busy (rare) then there are miles and miles of beach in Northumberland within a range of an hour.

boodlesandpoodles · 24/08/2020 21:17

Freedom to move anywhere! What a lovely luxury. This would do me! 300yds from beach in beautiful Devon village!

OMGafourth · 24/08/2020 21:19

Outskirts of Hastings are nice. Think Pett Level or Winchelsea. And a few places in your budget round that way too.

A few in Icklesham (Queens head is a lovely pub) and Westfield too, if they're not too far out.

msgreen · 24/08/2020 21:28

Norfolk coast is expensive, unless you go to Yarmouth!!
Or Cromer , no good schools , unless you go inland

Twinkled · 24/08/2020 21:33

Penarth ( 3 miles from Cardiff) , places around Devon, Cornwall, Tenby Tons of places on the coast

Twinkled · 24/08/2020 21:35

Look around east coast around Aldeburgh, Southwold , Walberswick , loads

BeginningBridge · 24/08/2020 21:35

What about Hayling Island? Good value for money and lovely beaches. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-86870264.html

Main disadvantage is getting on a daily off the island in rush hour but if you can work from home then it's a good option.
