AIBU to think DH's dream home location doesn't exist?

DH has long wanted to live by the sea/water. He grew up near the sea and is desperate for DS to have the same activities available to him (paddle boarding, surfing, beach walks etc)

We were all set to do it this year but seeing the crowds packed into beaches has really put me off. Don't get me wrong, I know tourist spots are obviously busy but the behaviour of people just seems to have gone into overdrive.

DH is convinced we can find somewhere on the coast around the south/south east that won't be rammed like Brighton or Bournemouth in summer and where we can find a four bedroom for around 400k.

I think he's living in a Dreamworld. We aren't tied to anywhere for work as we both work remotely and will continue to be working remotely. obviously want a good school for DS when he's old enough but don't mind somewhere quiet with not much going on in terms of shops, pubs - just one or two of each for convenience would be fine.

I just can't see there being a coastline which doesn't have loads of visitors as soon as the weather is nice, where we can actually afford.

We've had a look on Rightmove but because we can pretty much go anywhere, it's a broad spectrum to search and I think we need to narrow it down a bit.

DH is just desperate to move I think (another issue is I don't think our house will sell, it needs a lot of work but he wants to try and take advantage of the stamp duty holiday)

Am I being a grump? Or realistic?! I feel like if it existed we would have been able to find some houses by now

^^ move

Putmynewshoeson · 25/08/2020 10:16

@lioncitygirl you're probably bang on. I have a list from this thread I'm working through though, and currently really like the look of some of the places suggested in Suffolk, as well as Folkestone so I promise I'm not being too petulant and difficult Grin

Oh the beautiful Isle of Wight with ' forever homes ' in abundance in your price range, plus you're never far from a beach or quiet cove. Unfortunately, everyone seems to have had the same idea as your husband as so many of them are under offer. But seriously consider the IOW because it's like a little paradise especially near Ventnor. The climate is beautiful too.

South Hams are lovely. Not Brixham.

jwpetal · 25/08/2020 13:28

My friend lives in Westgate near Margate. When Margate was full, Westgate was busier than normal but still had space. They moved from London and love it.

merrymouse · 25/08/2020 13:37

Isle of Wight is lovely, but the main issue is the cost of the ferry, not just for you but for anyone visiting from the mainland.

Manolin · 25/08/2020 14:47

Yes @merrymouse and if a land bridge is ever built it will impact on the uniqueness of the island.

CruCru · 25/08/2020 15:16

I’ll be amazed if a bridge to the IoW is ever built. It would cost loads and no one would want it near their own house.

BrowncoatWaffles · 25/08/2020 15:19

@Putmynewshoeson This thread makes me laugh because I'm in Essex and DH and I constantly have lottery-win arguments about how I'd like to live in Leigh/Chalkwell where he moans about how awful traffic and parking would be during the summer and completely impractical.

We've settled on retiring to Hullbridge when the time comes ;) It's technically a river rather than the sea but ok for fishing / paddleboarding / canoeing / boats etc and it's gorgeous. Feels quite villagey but only a couple of miles from a train station that gets you into Liverpool Street in 45 minutes.

Although obviously when we move there I will spend my life watching the water on a balcony with a mug of tea as the seasons change and write my novel

Seaford, between Eastbourne and Brighton. Lovely schools and relaxed non touristy beach.

Ilovegardens · 25/08/2020 16:18

Depending on the relatives that could be a plus point! 😂

Yes. But that's why I would move there.....no one would turn up unexpectedly!
IndecentFeminist · 25/08/2020 16:47

I live on the island, and by hook or crook normally get tickets for around a £50 return. Yea, annoying but not the end of the world. If you need to commute or whatever there are season tickets.

AppleKatie · 25/08/2020 17:27

Isle of Wight is a revelation:

I’d move here OP: www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-81567067.html

HS2? All it takes is a few bad men and the promise of a healthy bank account......
CruCru · 26/08/2020 12:00

Yeah but the expectation is that HS2 will boost the economy. The IoW has agriculture and tourism - the largest employer is the council.

Folkestone/Sandgate/Hythe - i moved here with 2 kids 3 years ago after 20 years in London. It's great. Beautiful landscape (mostly), good schools, cheap property, easy to get to London, creative edge, lots of re-development going on. Sure, parts of it are a bit rough around the edges, but personally I'd rather that than a blanket middle-class village/town. Plenty to do and see in surrounding areas too.

Worthing. Littlehampton. Eastbourne. Pevensey.
