Breasts still leaking milk months into feeding, and nipple damage?

Hello, I’m just over 3 months of feeding (14 weeks) I’m still going through a box of nipple pads a week. They say it will stop at 10 weeks but still going? Major leakage when I feed from one the other one leaks so much.

Also my left nipple is just painful. Her latch is perfect, health advisors have checked. No pain on the right one but my left is just so sore?

Any advice?
Thanks

Do you ever catch let down with a silicone pump or anything? Is it sore for the whole feed?

CornforthWhite · 22/08/2020 17:11

I leaked for months. We are now 9 months and it’s only just stopping. Sometimes I leak, sometimes I don’t. For me it’s just part of it. I try not to worry about it.

I leaked for the entire year I was bf. Every time I thought it had settled I got caught out, bought washable pads on the end.

Babyboomtastic · 22/08/2020 17:11

Mine rarely leaked at first, but have leaked periodically from a few months in. I first needed to regularly use breast pads at about 6 months old.

They weren't sore though.

Unfortunately my breasts leaked with my first just like yours. I would wake up every night covered in milk and have to wear a bra with pads to bed after that. But it didn't happen at all with my second, I don't even have to wear pads at all.

Katinthedoghouse · 22/08/2020 17:25

I leaked too 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had a sort of plastic contraption that would collect the drips and it meant I could freeze the milk to use as a mixer with baby foods.

Shouldn’t hurt tho. Can you express any milk out by hand from the painful side ? Does it look normal ? Carry on trying to feed using the sore nipple though as it could lead to blocked ducts etc

I never stopped leaking. Breastfed dd for 2 years and always leaked, DS is 8 months amd still leaking. Washable pads are way cheaper! Even now, just cut up an old towel or fleece if you dont want to buy any x

If sore try different position? Could it be because one side is used more. 9My ds def had a favourite side.)

Caspianberg · 22/08/2020 18:28

No pain here, but still leak, baby 16 weeks. I bought reusable after 1 week.

User0ne · 22/08/2020 18:30

Some women just leak. I am lucky and don't (though I can't express). I have a friend who leaked for a year; she used to catch it in a silicone pump and use it for bottle feeds.

It's not just the latch which can cause sore nipples. Assuming no health issues then check your positioning carefully; is baby facing you at 90degress? is their back straight and horizontal to you? Is their body tucked in to yours?

Keyperfect · 22/08/2020 18:34

I've read comments from people on here on threads about unnecessary purchases, saying breast pads are a waste of money, and obviously some people don't leak - lucky them! But I have breastfed four DCs for about 2 years each and always leaked, although it does get a bit less as time goes on.

Your nipple shouldn't be sore though. I would investigate that. Latch might be suboptimal despite what HV says.

I always leaked from the side I wasn't feeding on when feeding, I would also leak if the baby cried, went longer between feeds, I rolled over in the night, I leaked a lot for the whole time I was feeding with each of my children.

I leaked for about a year. I found the bamboo breast pads to be excellent. My son is 16 months and we are still feeding. On the days I go to work I’m often leaking by 5ish. Fortunately I’m working from home and don’t need to see anyone and can angle my camera up for any zoom calls!
