To consider voluntary redundancy?

My industry has been quite significantly affected by Covid, and anyway before this all kicked off a big restructure had been announced. I will have the opportunity to submit my EOI in September.

I had been thinking that there was no way I'd consider it, and I do love my job, which is reasonably well paid and has a lot of benefits and perks, but now I'm starting to wonder if it makes sense.

We live in the South East, so very expensive house prices, and DH's job exists everywhere and he would also get pretty much the same salary anywhere in the country. We basically live where we do because we're tied to the location for my job. If I took voluntary redundancy, I'd get a good payout of 6 months salary, and possibly 3 months pay in lieu of notice. If we moved somewhere cheaper, we'd have a really good deposit for a house and we could probably get a mortgage on DH's salary alone.

There is still a chance that I'll be made redundant by the end of the year anyway, on the same terms as voluntary redundancy, and I think I'd feel more comfortable with that, being outside of my control, than with making the decision myself.

What would you do?

Stay put especially if you love your job.

Ooh...difficult one. How easily do you think you could get work again in your type of job (in normal times and Covid times)?

My job is very specialised, and there are very very few opportunities outside of the south east and London. If I leave for any reason I would probably have to leave that type of work entirely, and I'm not sure what else I would end up doing. I would still want to work, even if I didn't need to for the mortgage.
