to ask how much you would spend on a tween's bed and mattress?

We are redecorating DD's bedroom and have promised a new bed. She'd like a double with Ottoman storage. How much would you spend (including a comfy mattress) to get something that will last but doesn't break the bank? any tips?

How old is a "tween"?

Findahouse21 · 21/08/2020 19:52

I'd find something that we both liked and felt offered.good value for money. I wouldn't buy something crap, but also wouldn't buy something expensive that I didn't feel was worth it.

Depends on your budget too.
There are options for divan or frame beds.
I would suggest spending more on a good mattress and a solid frame.
Many bed shops are a total scam- scanners etc.
I think you can get a decent whole bed for £400.

£500-£600 for a double?

If you are on a tight budget then also consider buying a second hand bed frame and a new mattress.

We're e in the same position. 13yo DS is asking for a double. Trouble is he's 6ft 5 and despite being slim, pretty heavy. He's broken bed slats before throwing himself into his bed. We usually go to IKEA but I'm not sure they're sturdy enough

Emeraldshamrock · 21/08/2020 19:58

I bought a cheap small 4ft double ottoman divan as DD is very slim, whereas we needed to invest in an expensive bed for us as DP is very heavy.
I wouldn't buy an expensive sturdy double for a child.
DD is in hers 2 years it is still perfect.

CrunchyNutNC · 21/08/2020 19:59

M&S do good beds and mattresses but you need to wait for a sale otherwise they're a bit pricey.

Chezacheza · 21/08/2020 19:59

Spend what you can afford.

Strangeday21 · 21/08/2020 20:02

We kept an eye on a silentnight and got a lovely ottoman & mattress . Like others said it depends on what you want to pay for it - we used a good discount they offered.
Really pleased with it and had it now a couple of years.

mollibu · 21/08/2020 20:39

I got an otterman bed & mattress off eBay! (I think the seller was bed world or something?)

I paid £212 for everything and 3 years in still as comfy as ever!

What is a tween?

Mine all had doubles from about age 11. John Lewis frame and mattress about £300. They are now mid 20s s and the frames are still good- mattresses replaced for something a bit more substantial after about 8 years

jgjgjgjgjg · 21/08/2020 20:47

A tween is between child and teenager - so 10/11/12.

We're planning around £1k for ottoman storage bed with decent mattress. That will last her until she goes to university.

LadyCatStark · 21/08/2020 21:01

We spent £350 I think on a double ottoman bed for DS. It’s a lovely grey material. DH and I have the same one in king size so it’s more than sturdy enough for one 11 year old.

LadyCatStark · 21/08/2020 21:01

Oh I forgot, it’s from Dreams.

Erictheavocado · 21/08/2020 21:26

I always buy the best I can afford when it comes to beds/mattresses and shoes. After all, if you're not in one, it's likely you're in the other. At your dds age, I would definitely be looking for a bed that will see her into early adulthood - a good mattress should last around ten years. A good base will last even longer if you replace the mattress as appropriate.

Shmithecat2 · 21/08/2020 21:29

We bought ds (4yo) an Emma double mattress and a 2 drawer divan, total about £500 I think? The Emma had 40% off at the time.
