Amibu to be annoyed to be asked for money for my daughters birthday party that my mil offered to organise and host.
Their spending way more than I would've done!

Was the original agreement that you'd pay, she'd host and organise? Did you have a conversation about budgeting? Are you being asked to foot the whole bill, or just to contribute? Need a bit more info to judge whether YABU.

Hi MIL, I didn't realise I would be paying for the party you're organising, apologies if there has been a misunderstanding. As that's the case then I'm very sorry to say that I need to ask you to cancel as I simply don't have anything like enough money for this. Maybe we can put our heads together and come up with something just as nice, but a lot cheaper.

Nothing was discussed about money.
She offered to do it.
And now is asking for money for it.

I think you just need to tell her she offered to do it and leave it at that. She can ask all she likes but I wouldn't even consider offering her a penny. Might be worth reminding her it's rude to ask.

I agree with the pp - tell MIL it's outside your budget but you'll work with her to come up with something cheaper. You say it's your MIL - is your husband on the scene - could he support you in dealing with her if she's tricky?

Has it happened already or is it in the planning stage ?

How can it cost a fortune in these times of restrictions anyway ?

How old is dd ?
