Barbers - what age to use from?

Mum2154 · 21/08/2020 14:18

My little one (1 years old) had his first barber haircut. I’m not very impressed as it looks wonky from front. I didn’t notice it at the time but looking now looks a little odd. Rest of it is good. What is the right age to take to barbers? Is it best to just take to hairdresser? My hairdresser don’t do kids till they’re at least 7. I’m really confused what to do about his hair for next time.

I forgot to add the barbers I took him to was by far rated the best. It had over 1000 reviews all giving it 4 or 5. My husbands barbers has about 20 reviews all mixed but they don’t do one year olds hair.

I have seen many taking their 1-2 year olds to the barbers

So I think that's an ok age, I did my boys hair at home though until he was about 3 and could sit still for longer

Mum2154 · 21/08/2020 14:22

@dwiz8 thank you. Gosh you’re brave doing it yourself! I might try to straighten the front myself as it’s so uneven, he’s quite good he did sit at barbers quietly so I might try.

I've been doing DHs hair for the past few years so had the clippers. Thankfully DS has quite short hair which was easy to do when little - although might have been a different story if he had nice curls etc. Back then

I took ds from around 6 months

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 21/08/2020 14:28

Dh has taken ds to his barbers since he was around 1 year old. He gets to watch cartoons, is given a lollipop and learns a new Polish word or phase with every haircut. At first he'd sit on dh's knee and then he graduated to the chair by himself at around 3. He's now 5 and a half and loves going.

Soubriquet · 21/08/2020 14:28

My ds was 1 the first time he went

We went to one who catered to children

They had their own little children’s room with funky wall paper. There was cars to sit in as chairs and they had CBeebies on the TV for them to watch whilst the hair was being done

ittooshallpass · 21/08/2020 14:32

I'd take him back to barbers and ask them to sort it out!

Mum2154 · 21/08/2020 14:41

Thank you everyone for your replies. Yes I’m tempted to take him back! I might actually do it tomorrow when I’m in town and complain about it

Definitely take him back or go to another one

I took ds to one first...and he looked like he had a bowl cut! It was awful.

I immediately went to another one (the one I mentioned) and they sorted it out perfectly

Emeraldshamrock · 21/08/2020 15:34

Are you sure it doesn't look wonky from an angle, was he wriggling much.
I've been bringing DS for 4 years, he still screams I have to restrain him I've let it grow over lockdown he looks like a mushroom.

DelurkingAJ · 21/08/2020 15:36

DH has taken DSs from about 18 months. Had to hold their heads still at first but infinitely better than trying to do it at home!

Newdaynewname1 · 21/08/2020 15:43

My oldest went to the barber’s from 7 months, youngest was almost 2 years (youngest day have loads of hair, oldrst has very quick growing thick hair). Hairdresser is a waste of money at that age (barber for us is £10, hairdressers start at £30....)

Mum2154 · 21/08/2020 16:00

I just tried combing to one side and looks slightly better! But keeps going in middle where it looks worse. It’s easy saying on here that I will definitely go back to that barber and complain but I know I actually won’t! As I’m a coward! I might give DH’s barber a go. I’ve realised these reviews you see are not always accurate. I was so impressed seeing all 4/5* I didn’t think much of his manner either maybe that’s what barbers are like! My first time going into one.

Look for a children's hairdresser's. They are usually better at tis kind of thing.

ihatelockdown · 21/08/2020 16:11

Kids haircuts are rarely perfect! They are a moving target especially at that age!

Soubriquet · 21/08/2020 16:17

Ds’s bowl cut vs the repair which was done later that day.

Worth getting it sorted. Bless him.

That bowl cut photo is so going in his 18th birthday party portfolio Grin

He’s 5 now and not so cute Grin

He has lost all that soft baby fat too but he still gives brilliant snuggles so it all works out

My son was nearly 3 when we took him for the first time. He didn't need to go before then.
