The Secret

AIBU to give “the secret” any thought?

I toyed with it years ago. Asked “the universe” for a £10 note. Walking through York the night after, found a wet soggy £10 note on the floor in a graveyard.

Played with it again a few weeks later. Asked the universe for a red balloon. Immediately afterwards I put YouTube on to listen to some music and the first recommended video was a song called something like “10 red balloons”. I’d never heard of the song before.

When I was a child, before I knew of “the secret” we were moving house and I desperately wanted a garden with steps in it. That would have been highly unusual in this area but I kept on thinking about it obsessively. The house we moved to had steps in the garden (the only house in the whole street that did).

My friend goes on about the secret all the time, I put all my “successes” down to coincidence as the alternative sounds batshit but some people truly believe it works, intelligent people!!

I watched the movie yesterday and I’ve decided I want £50k in my bank by New Year’s Eve 😂 ironically DH said to me this morning “we have nearly x amount in bank! The most we’ve ever had!” (Nowhere near £50k) ... maybe it’s already working lol

This is of course lighthearted but I’d be interested to hear other people’s experiences of it?! Please don’t turn it into a “you’re a fucking imbecile OP” type thread, it’s just for fun.

Yes it does work. I have manifested all sorts of things. It’s really crazy but true!

mindutopia · 21/08/2020 11:05

I read it years ago as a student and did give it a try as I desperately wanted to get on a postgraduate course. I tried applying two years in a row, I made a whole vision board that used to hang on the back of my bedroom door about what my life would be like if I got on this course and the future career and life I'd have. Didn't work. I got rejected second year running.

But ...I was so fed up after the second time and so upset that it didn't work, I decided to do something completely different. I looked for jobs abroad, applied for and got a job working with an NGO in a country I'd never even been to, up and moved half way around the world a couple months later. It was the happiest and most exciting time of my life. I met dh (who was also working there) about two months after I arrived. I eventually got on a different postgrad course (much better fit for me) and have had a really fulfilling career and life has turned out much better than I think it would have if all my plans had worked out.

I think maybe sometimes the universe knows better than you do, no matter how much you want to influence it to do what you want.

Pippin2028 · 21/08/2020 11:05

I do like it and there is another one called the magic which is a 28 day practice but its not just wishful thinking (this is where people go wrong) it's about taking actions to achieve what you want too. But a positive mindset does help and improve things for you.

HannaYeah · 21/08/2020 11:06

It only works for material things.

Material things are sometimes nice, but don’t bring happiness.

There’s something really awful about having every “thing” you want come to you.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2020 11:06

Poster of a certain age might remember the Polices last album "Synchronicity" and the (first) title track ...

A connecting principle,
Linked to the invisible
Almost imperceptible
Something inexpressible.
Science insusceptible
Logic so inflexible
Causally connectable

Orchidsindoors · 21/08/2020 11:07

Isnt this just being a bit physic? Ie you see things happening in advance, rather than you making it happen?

DollyDoneMore · 21/08/2020 11:07

Sorry, but there’s no point posting “don’t call me a fucking imbecile” when you’ve just posted the kind of stuff a fucking imbecile would say.

No, there is nothing in this. It’s bollocks. You can’t wish the universe into line.

DGRossetti · 21/08/2020 11:08

Of course there's always the Jagger view ..

You can't always get what you want .. But if you try sometime you find You get what you need

StatementKnickers · 21/08/2020 11:09

I have desperately wished for many very specific things in my life and got precisely none of them. YABU.

I really really really want my neighbours to move...are you saying if I wish for it hard enough, it will happen?! Its been 3 years now and theyve not moved yet.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 21/08/2020 11:10

Of course it works. Quantum physics has proved that thought is creative.

LilaButterfly · 21/08/2020 11:11

Works for me too a lot of the time. When i was at uni, i used to drive there a lot because i would miss the train. The car park was small and most my friends gave up on driving because they never had a spot. I never arrived extremely early or anything, just in time for the lesson and i had a spot every single day without fail.
I just told myself theres gonna be a spot. It worked every time.
However, ive also told myself i will win the lottery, but that hasnt happened yet. Maybe im not convinced enough Wink
I wanted to buy a certain car at one point, but it was way out of my price range. 2 weeks later i found one barely used for a ridiculously low price. It wa sthe exact colour i wanted and had all the extras i would have chosen as well. I was so sceptical i had my mechanic friend look at it. We still have that car 10 years later and its perfectly fine.

ChicCroissant · 21/08/2020 11:11

I have not read the book so am only going on what's been said on this thread about it, but I do think your mind follows your focus - what you are looking for. So if you have a bit of clarity about what you are looking for/aiming for in life, you're going to notice things that can help you achieve that.

ThatsNotMyNameItsTooFluffy · 21/08/2020 11:13

Confirmation bias, yes.
Although I do know of two people of the positivity mindset, one of whom brought cancer into it, which made me Angry
I should have pointed out at that point that Bärbel Mohr, the originator of the cosmic ordering franchise (she wrote seven books in total) which so impressed Noel, died of cancer aged 46, leaving behind 9 year old twins. The universe sucks.

Royalbloo · 21/08/2020 11:14

I have written myself a pretend cheque for £400k - will let you know if it works!

BottomOfMyPencilCase · 21/08/2020 11:14

It only works for material things
I think that misunderstands it. Although tbh it is years since I've read The Secret and I tend to read more psychology so I may be confusing the 'concepts'.
But, take an action board because 'vision/action' boards are central to The Secret. Your actions could be aimed at learning a new skill, losing weight, gaining weight, being happier, being more relaxed, seeing friends more regularly, etc.

Royalbloo · 21/08/2020 11:15

I wanted my neighbours to move Orchidsindoors and they did - just before lockdown too!

Takingontheworld · 21/08/2020 11:17

What is the book mentioned please?

islandislandisland · 21/08/2020 11:18

Hmm unsure myself. I once dated someone who had a fling with a woman who told him she had 'asked the universe for a wonderful man and let him have blue eyes and blonde hai if you can' and there he was. He binned her pronto because he thought it was all too strange and intense. I wouldn't have said he was blonde either really, sometimes you believe what you want to believe.

Right, I'll have another go!!

VividImagination · 21/08/2020 11:20

I’ve never heard of “The Secret” but some time ago money was very tight and I was wondering how we would get to the end of the month. I had put lots of small bits on gumtree which had sold for a few odd pounds and I had a large item that I’d had on for months with no interest.

I took the dog for a walk to his usual field and half way round there was a large, pure white butterfly just sitting on the grass. I walk my dog in that field several times a day, most days and have never seen a butterfly there,, ever. I stopped and looked closely and it didn’t fly away. After a while I walked on and when I circled back round it was gone. I really felt it was some sort of sign and thought to myself, perhaps it means that I will sell that large item today. When I got home there was a message from someone wanting to buy it. I have never seen a butterfly in that field since.

I don’t believe that was coincidence.

Orchidsindoors · 21/08/2020 11:21

Although I must say, I did finally decide I wasnt going to my inlaws for Christmas after 20 odd years of going and hating it and I said to myself, "that's it, I'm done, I'm not going"....then I didnt have to as they died weeks before. Was that my fault?
