To ask what make up you loved in the 90s

I'm on a bit of a nostalgia trip this afternoon after finding a stub of MAC Viva Glam (the first iteration) which I bought from Harvey Nichols in 1994 (amazingly it still smells fine and applies just like it did 26 years ago). I bought it from one of my first pay packets and went on a waiting list to get it. I also remember being on a waiting list for ALL the Hard Candy pastel nail polishes a couple of years later - £12 a pop and I bought five or six! Also waiting list for Chanel Rouge Noir - took months to get my hands on it and in the meantime I mixed black and red nail polish which resulted in a lovely streaky mess 😂

At the start of the 90s I was a sort of goth/Manic Street Preachers fan hybrid so lots of smudged black eyeliner and red lips and glitter for nights out. Mid 90s I was Courtney Love obsessed with hair, clothes and makeup to match. Towards the end of the decade it was all MAC Spice lipliner and Carmex with shimmery eyeshadow. And for all of it, skinny perma-surprised brows which never grew back.

What were your favourite looks/fondly remembered but long gone 90s beauty staples?

Anyone remember venezia perfume..think it was spelt like that ...I loved it xxx

Squidwitch · 20/08/2020 22:57

Black cherries Rimmel! Oh my god, we ALL had that at school! Avon eternal kiss in Poppy, pure red drama! And shitty kohl sticks that we used inside our lower eyelids and scratched our eyes. And max factor paprika lipstick, which cost most of my Saturday wages

Missanneshirley · 20/08/2020 22:59

My wedding make up was all Virgin VieGrin done by one of their "reps"!

Going way back, so maybe 80s rather than 90s I wore Constance Carroll powder...i was SO white!
Then 10 /15 years or so later, suddenly so shiny, plastering Benefit moon beam everywhere and dusting glitter all over the place!

Missanneshirley · 20/08/2020 23:01

Perfume...
Dewberry from the Body Shop
Exclamation
Anais Anais
LouLou (top favourite!)

Also not make up but VO5 shockwaves hairspray in the blue pump bottle..made your hair crispy to the touch!

Therollockingrogue · 20/08/2020 23:01

God I loved the st Ives minty scalp thing @PennyDreadfuI

MobLife · 20/08/2020 23:02

@SillyUnMurphy my mason pearson hairbrush from back then is still my pride and joy!!

Inthebackoftheimpala · 20/08/2020 23:10

Amethyst Shimmer lipstick, Elizabeth Arden Flawless finish and Cerutti 1881 or Pacco Robanne XS. Paris was my pulling perfume 😆

Lillygolightly · 20/08/2020 23:10

Rimmel Heather Shimmer Lipstick

Exclamation perfume

Almay long lasting hypoallergenic foundation. It was amazing stuff I was so sad when they went out of business. I bought the whole lot that was left in my colour from the boots counter.

Next did good jewellery back then, i always found nice dress jewellery that didn’t turn my fingers green or make me want to rip my ears off.

Yardly used to do a little blusher compact and it went from pink to peach and it was the perfect colour. Also the gold lipsticks really nice colours and lasted well.

I miss mascara being cheap!! Used to be able to pick it up for a couple of quid. These days mascara just always seems overpriced to me, you think it would be cheaper since so many wear fake lashes now!

Homebodiva · 20/08/2020 23:10

DF worked in the States for a while and I remember going over in 1996 and going to a maawwwlll and buying Maybelline mascara and Max Factor lipstick 😂

Firsttimemummy33 · 20/08/2020 23:10

No 7 Bon Bon lipstick!

SteveArnottsbeadyeyes · 20/08/2020 23:11

Oddly the Exclamation ad has just pooped into my head now
“Make a statement... without saying a word” the something that went a bit like “eh ooh. Ooh eh ah”

userxx · 20/08/2020 23:19

LouLou (top favourite!)

God I loved Loulou

ChavvySexPond · 20/08/2020 23:23

I was into Prescriptives Virtual Skin over Prescriptives white Magic Illuminating Potion or Revlon Skinlights Which was the icy 90s version of glass skin. Worn with Juicy tubes or a statement lipstick in browny red or reddy brown.

There was something pale and shimmery on the eyelids, white highlighter under the brow. Kylie shapes brows and and Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara.

Finger nails were oiled not painted. Toe nails iridescent pastel.

Hair was centre parted with two little buns and the nape of the neck. Sometimes zig zag parted.

ScorpioSphinxInACalicoDress · 20/08/2020 23:29

Kab30- Venezia by Laura Biagiotti? We can still get that here in Italy.
The Impulse I wore was Nirvana in black tin and briefly a pink one called Captivation.

Oh the tendrils! Confused

ViciousJackdaw · 20/08/2020 23:46

@SteveArnottsbeadyeyes I'm bloody singing that to myself now!

I loved Insette Spikey hairspray, it was ideal for that Robert Smith look and the crispiness was beyond compare. That stuff was the white Lightning of the hairstyling world.

ChavvySexPond · 20/08/2020 23:55

@isabellerossignol

Did anyone else order from the Club de Createurs de Beauté? I ordered loads of Agnes B makeup. There was a great peach coloured tinted moisturiser that was great for pale people like me as it didn't go streaky and orange like tan tinted moisturiser.
Yes! I felt soooo sophisticated for having different make up to my friends. And French make up at that. t the beginning of the decade I was aiming for lit from within Casper and a sort of peachy juiciness by the end. Agnes b had the colour corrector for both.
AliTheMinx · 21/08/2020 00:03

Agnes B, Heather Shimmer, Amarige, LouLou, CK One, Body Shop Kiwi Lip Balm, Juicy Tubes, Poison, Exclamation, Charlie Red

ChavvySexPond · 21/08/2020 00:19

@isabellerossignol

I loved all the Ruby and Millie stuff, the packaging was a joy in itself.

I still have a couple of Ruby and Millie brushes, they have been used regularly for over 20 years and are like new.

I too still a Ruby and Millie Brush in daily use.

Also Deci Dela! I'd completely forgotten about it, but I adored it.

(Am reading through the thread exclaiming and smiling) Smile

Twofurrycatsagain · 21/08/2020 01:31

What a happy thread! Brought back some great memories. I loved virgin vie - still have a half bottle of dry oil body spray knocking about. Ruby and Millie did a fantastic eyeshadow that I graduated onto from Rimmel. loulou, eden, Chloe narcissus were my favourite perfumes mid to late 90's.
My least fave experience was lipcote after one particular experience. Apply lipstick, blot, powder repeat about 5 times then seal with lipcote. Created a laminated supposedly unshiftable look. First bottle of Pils ripped the whole lot off! Probably a great exfoliation for lips.

dillydallydollydaydream7 · 21/08/2020 04:49

Live this thread!

Exclamation and So...? Body sprays (especially the sickly So...? Kiss Me), Charlie body sprays and perfume, Body Shop Dewberry perfume, pink hair mascara that smelt like watermelon, nail varnish that peeled off after application, No7 Highland Mist lipstick, lip gloss in a roller tube that was bright pink with clumps of glitter in (that made your lips feel like they had been coated in Ronseal...), bronzing pearls, blue mascara, roll on body glitter

BusterGonad · 21/08/2020 05:12

I had a wooden box with eyeshadow x 2 blusher and lipstick in from Miss Selfridge, it had a slidy lid like a pencil case. I loved it. I also had 2 of the glitter pots one turquoise blue and one white. My usual make up was plummy, charcoal smokey eye make up. The plum was a, Max Factor single, the charcoal and white was Ultima 2 by Revlon (?). I bought it reduced in Debenhams. I'd wear very pale foundation, the Max Factor long lasting one in the palest shade, I am pale but this was another level, then I'd use a M&S lavender/lilac lipstick that had a shimmer to it, it was limited edition and my mum bought it, I loved it so she bought one for me! 😁 I actually looked okay. I moved on to a Body Shop eyebrow powder, then discovered that a Cover girl long lasting lipstick in Posey or something was perfect as a blush, which I teamed with an amazing Olay of Olay tinted moisturizer from their make up range. I had many complaints on my skin so I think it looked good. My ultimate purchase though, and I still miss it, was my Estee Lauder blush petels. All different shades of pink with a gold highlighter core in the middle. I've looked many times on ebay but no luck. Oh and Benefit Flamingo Fancy...... A gold/bronze body lotion.

pollylocketpickedapocket · 21/08/2020 05:17

Clearly carnation lipstick no 17

BusterGonad · 21/08/2020 05:20

A also remember a Barry M lipgloss in a, pit that tasted like toffee, full of glitter. I loved that. Which takes me nicely to the Benefit lipgloss in a black pot full of glitter. It was the kitten puff lipgloss.
