High earner - but unsettled

Iprobap · 19/08/2020 19:50

Annual pay about £250k, between 16% - 50% discretionary bonus and shares. Overseas based for UK global financial services company.

Personally still earn full salary, but possible no increase, bonuses and shares this year and next few maybe? I foresee retrenchments in future because of COVID-19.

I know we are on different scales on here and this is no brag. Curious to know if others are as unsettled by possibility of losing benefits because of impact of COVID-19 on global economy?

LongPause really? Confused

NoSquirrels · 19/08/2020 20:33

StartingGrid how did you get from OP their ‘wider concern’ about the people they employ? Confused

peachpuppy · 19/08/2020 20:34

@LongPauseNoReply I guess it seems to be somewhat tactless to be complaining about this in a public forum. Everyone has their worries about what this pandemic will mean for them, but those who aren't in any immediate risk of being financially fucked could always hold off for a little while in order to avoid being inconsiderate to those who are genuinely struggling financially.

thecatsthecats · 19/08/2020 20:34

OK, OP, I'll bite.

I've felt less financially blasé as I've earned more, because it feels scarier to lose more somehow (and I'm talking about the difference between 35 and 55k).

Still, I'm hugely surprised that you haven't had the sense to nurture a proper nest egg. You could easily put away 50k a year and still live the life of bloody riley. So take this as a wake up call. Start saving a fantastic chunk of money so that you don't feel the weight of losing that salary.

Iprobap · 19/08/2020 20:35

coco actually I could live with about 50% less of guaranteed pay. We own our house outright. I drive an 8 year-old VW Polo.
I am unsettled by losing what I am used to getting, especially given workplace expectations are higher than before.

I had plans, which will be slowed down by this.

Look I've smiled at food banks, street corners, clothless, homeless and feeding the poor. Had love, family, health. Never been more blessed.

'Rich' as people see it. I tried to kill myself every god damn day. Lonely, stressful, greedy place where you can't trust anyone.

Dont judge unless you've walked a mile in their shoes.

bobbiester · 19/08/2020 20:36

@StartingGrid People are absolutely thick if they can't understand THINK that higher earners make a larger contribution to the economy, therefore society needs them too.

TFTFY

MadgeMak · 19/08/2020 20:37

*I don’t think it’s in bad taste, there are plenty of really wealthy people on this site and they have the right to ask about wealth management the same as someone on benefits has the right to ask about that.

You all sound jealous btw.*

No jealousy here, I'm relatively well off myself. OP does have the right to ask about wealth management, OP has the right to ask about anything in fact, but OP should be prepared for opinions on the post when asking on a public forum. Besides which it wasn't really a question about wealth management, was it? It was basically a moan about possibly not getting a bonus. So yes, it is distasteful when there are people who are actually having to use a food bank to feed their kids because they've lost their job due to Covid.

C130 · 19/08/2020 20:37

OP I think the answer to your question is yes. I also think you already know this. What information are you wanting to know?

Aahhwoof · 19/08/2020 20:37

@RiteAid

Kim, there’s people that are dying
Here for this.

Never before has the popcorn emoji been more needed

ShalomToYouJackie · 19/08/2020 20:37

I'm sure you'll manage.

If I can manage on 12K for two adults, you can manage on 250K

BeijingBikini · 19/08/2020 20:38

Is this a joke? Surely you would save about 90% of that salary for hard times like this? If you're complaining about not getting a bonus when you already earn a QUARTER OF A MILLION then that's just pure greed.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 19/08/2020 20:38

These threads really piss me off. I have no time at all for people earning totally obscene salaries, bleating about how 'hard' they work. Harder than a brain surgeon with other people's lives in your hands every day of the week? I highly doubt it.
Now you're worried in case you earn a slightly less obscene amount this year?
Tell you what, instead of being so grasping, how about using some of that ridiculous salary to help people affected by Covid?

bobbiester · 19/08/2020 20:39

@lprobap I am unsettled by losing what I am used to getting . . . I had plans, which will be slowed down by this.

If I could post a picture it would be of a man playing a minature violin - with the caption...

"Aww boo hoo, let me play you a sad song on the world's smallest violin"

ArabellaScott · 19/08/2020 20:41
Biscuit
MadgeMak · 19/08/2020 20:41

Oh no, your plans will be slowed down. What a nightmare scenario.

Someonesayroadtrip · 19/08/2020 20:41

We are being hit by a fire and rehire scheme which will drastically reduce the amount we earn and it's already a fraction of what you earn.

I agree that's it's crap, but you can't even see your privilege. No one what's to earn less than what they are used to, but owning your own house outright and having a quarter of a million a year are pipe dreams for most people. Your worry about your future plan isn't wondering of you will be able to pay the mortgage or what happens if the car breaks down is it?

I believe you have every right to feel annoyed, but posting currently with mass job losses and widespread fire and rehire schemes is a bit insensitive to the other 90% who are wondering what their future holds and feeling like life is too hard to go on.

NotJustACigar · 19/08/2020 20:42

Most of these posts are from sheer fantasists unlikely to earn even a tenth of what they claim.

OldKingCole · 19/08/2020 20:42

**Regardless how much I earn, I am still want to be paid for what I put in.

With grammar like that I find it very to believe this post is real

Anotherdayanothernight · 19/08/2020 20:43

At least you still have job...

Kittykat93 · 19/08/2020 20:43

Ah you've made me laugh op. And there's me sat worrying tonight that I don't have 250 quid to have my car fixed. The way the other half lives eh.

bobbiester · 19/08/2020 20:44

Oh - I can post an image...

High earner - but unsettled

@Plumplumbadum

I think it's in poor taste to ask this right now, as many people here have lost their jobs and businesses. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to tell me IABU.
How? So only those struggling can post on mumsnet?
